Well now that it appears official that we will only be able to host the championship game if we make it. The semi's will be at #2.
Apparently the HL AD's voted on it and figured it was best for them to have 2 chances at hosting rather then 1. I think the whole thing is a joke...

We are in the last year of a five year contract with the Cell. The problem was written into that contract when it was negotiated. Rick Costello has been working on the issue essentially since he got to Milwaukee, but the WCD isn't budging.

I posted this in another thread but here it is again.
At least we know where we stand now.
1) Wave Soccer Games 2) Wave Soccer Practice 3) The Circus 4) Roller Derby 5) Ice Skating Show 6) That basketball team from UW-M.

It was brought up on Sports 32 Roundtable taping today about moving the WIAA basketball tournaments. Apparantly the folks at the Cell were called about possibly hosting and they apparantly bluntly said NO. I also mentioned our situation to Dennis Krause and he gave a "You gotta be kidding me. Disney over basketball?" roll of his eyes.
All I can say now is that this has probably convinced Costello to really get the on-campus arena train rolling ASAP.

Slight thread hijack, but the WIAA tournament stuff is unbelievable. The idea of the high school tournament moving to Green Bay is just ridiculous, but it seems that's what's going to happen. Nothing against the Resch Center, which is a nice facility, but apart from people who are following the teams that make state, who would want to go to Green Bay? For many people, half the experience of going to the state tournament is going to Madison. Milwaukee would be fun for a lot of people too (although to be honest, there is a certain percentage of upstate folks who are convinced downtown Milwaukee is somehow dangerous, which is hysterical). But Green Bay? On days when the Packers aren't playing it's like a more boring Wausau. And except for a couple Packer bars nearby, there is nothing of interest near the Resch.

The train has been rolling for a while. It needs money. If any of you find 20 million bucks lying around, please send it to Rick.

I want to know what Rick Costello's idea was? Where did he want to play the game considering he knew he wouldn't be able to play at the Cell

Rick wanted to play at the Cell, and has worked to fix the problem. If the problem couldn't be fixed, why would he want to play anywhere other than Klotsche? Why would you not want to play the game on campus if the Cell isn't available?

I know I asked this before but I don't know if I saw a response but i think Fran would know best here.
Did we screw the pooch and not reserve the dates, or did the WCD just say F-U and take Disney for the cash.

As I understand it, the original contract allowed the WCD to schedule certain shows at its discretion during that time period, DOI among them. I don't know to what extent if at all that issue was negotiated at the time. Maybe nobody thought it would ever really become an issue. Unfortunately, it has. In any case, the WCD was apparently within its contract rights when it booked DOI.
Just a guess on my part but the Milwaukee Theater is probably a severe financial anchor on the WCD, and they simply decided they couldn't afford to turn down the additional certain revenue at the Cell that they would get from shows like DOI, and wouldn't negotiate away the right to get that revenue. I don't know how much revenue the HLT generates for the WCD, but the DOI show is very popular. And even now, of course, there's no certainty that we will qualify to host the HLT anyway.
All of this simply shows that we need our own facility. The program will be forever hamstrung as a second-class tenant in someone else's building. As far as I know Milwaukee and Green Bay are the only HL schools that don't control their facilities, but the scheduling pressure on the Resch Center is substantially less intense than it is on the Cell.

All this nonsense has made me appreciate the job of recruiting that our staff has done even more.
What a recruiting nightmare...yeah, we might win our league and earn the right to host what could be the biggest game of your college career but, then again, maybe we'll have to go on the road as league champs and win it on someone's floor in front of someone's fans. Great.
If I was RJ I'd be listening to anyone who came calling too.
I can only imagine what opposing coaches tell our potential recruits regarding our practice and facilities situation.

If I was RJ I'd be listening to anyone who came calling too. To that wouldn't it be also the point to say that it would be up to Rick to try and make a point to get Rob to stay if he wants to. Not saying that I want Rob and staff to leave at all but it would just seem that this type of situation would also lend itself to saying this would give Rick a reason to make an effort to keep him around.
