Time will tell if he's the genius some proclaim him to be, Even though I was on the other side of the argument...I just want the record to show that I never claimed Thompson was a genius.

He never once called out a player when he had plenty of opportunities to do so. Javon Walker on line 2. He'd like a word with you.

He rarely called anyone out, and certainly not in a premeditated press conference that will be replayed for the ages. Better? And people say I split hairs.....

I had forgotten about Walker - and that was in response to Walker b*tching about his contract. Brett was sticking up for the organization.

I still have yet to hear anybody explain to me why less than 24 hours after Moss signs with the Patriots - his desire to play with Moss is well-chronicled - Favre hangs it up. And my guess is you'll never know.

Holic, isn't it beautiful that Favre and Sapp are going into the Hall of Fame together?
I think it will be the culmination of one of the greatest rivalries between two individuals when they are the Class of 2013.

I think it will be the culmination of one of the greatest rivalries between two individuals when they are the Class of 2013. As a fellow Buccaneer fan, I find it far from beautiful how this occasion has been dealt with. In fact its disgusting. It is absolutely absurd that Sapp gets next to no press about his retirement and the league (and ESPN) are in some state of mourning over the Favre retirement. 3 days of constant ESPN coverage on both networks and the radio. a week of NFL Network coverage of every moment of his career. Favre's image was on the cover of ESPN.com longer than any player who died and any team who won a title. Oakland is the bigger media outlet (and its further from Bristol) so thats out of the question. Is this a race issue? When was the last time a first ballot Hall of Famer was forgotten? The only 2 factors I can see is that the Raiders weren't really competitive when Sapp ended his career and Sapp doesn't play QB. Sapp's lone ESPN article (compared to Favre's 35) was about how ESPN was forgetting him. What a joke. NFL Network has yet to give Sapp his video montage week. On to Favre... I hope Ted Thompson made 50 calls this weekend to his players UNDER CONTRACT to tell them he would like them back next year so they don't get the impression he doesn't want them. Apparently not calling is enough for someone who "loves to play the game" to quit loving it. When is someone going to take off their green and gold blinders and question the selfishness of a man who held management and the franchise hostage for 4 years?

Does anybody honestly think he'd sit up there and bash Ted Thompson? He's never said a bad word about anybody in his 17 years in the NFL. He never once called out a player when he had plenty of opportunities to do so. It's not his style. Let's get real here. I still have yet to hear anybody explain to me why less than 24 hours after Moss signs with the Patriots - his desire to play with Moss is well-chronicled - Favre hangs it up. Here is a portion of today's jsonline chat w/ Bob McGinn, who doesn't carry anybody's water. This is what I've been trying to get at: Q: Stevie of Milton - Hello Bob- You are my favorite sports writer. Do you think Brett Favre's retirement speech put to rest the Scott Favre and Bus Cook comments. I was a Colts fan for 24 hours thinking the Pack pushed Brett out the door. A: Bob McGinn - Stevie: Do you think Cook and the brother were lying? Of course, they weren't lying. There were a lot of factors involving Favre's decision-making process that didn't come up yesterday. Here you have TT and MM sitting 15 feet away. It's in the GB atrium. There's a G blanket behind the podium. The Packers orchestrated the event. Now you get Favre on his own turf, in Hattiesburg or anywhere away from that building, and some of the stuff that the agent and the brother said would have shown forth. Take pressers in team headquarters for what they are. Some of it is real. Some of it is sanitized.

The media's infatuation with Favre is no secret to anyone who even remotely pays attention to the NFL. Right or wrong, agree with it or disagree with it...it is what it is. For Sapp to file his retirement papers on the same day Favre holds a presser to officially announce his retirement was not a smart move if he was hoping for a lot of attention and coverage. Maybe his timing was purposeful for the reason that he didn't want a lot of press coverage. Who knows? I'm sure if he would've waited a week or so...he'd have received a ton more attention.

The lack of publicity Sapp's gotten for his retirement is b.s. For what he's been able to accomplish as a DT is remarkable and while his tenure in Oakland wasn't great, neither was Jerry Rice's in Oakland (including his failed attempt in Denver) nor Emmitt Smith's in Arizona but they weren't cast aside upon hanging it up. The amount of coverage Favre's gotten is sad but considering the lack other news going on I can understand.
I love Panther fans who say "no one person makes the team" and then b**** how Favre's not being shown enough love by the front office. People b**** TT didn't bring offensive playmakers for Favre as if Sherman/Wolf were signing guys annually to help him out. I mean who were the last playmakers to join the Packers? Rison and Jackie Harris (or whoever the TE from Miami was)? So Sherman/Wolf try to add people via the draft and that's ok but TT does the same thing and he's an asshole. Favre's crying about the lack of playmakers is no different than Kobe or Lebron's whinings. Hell the fact the Cavs bend over backwards for Lebron is pathetic. I've never said TT is the best GM by any means b/c I don't agree w/ some of his key philosophies but I give him credit for refusing to be a "yes man" for Favre. TT was going to treat Favre like any other player and not just bend over whenever Favre wanted him to which is something Brett didn't like.

Sapp holds zero records.
Sapp is not an NFL icon.
I question Sapp's HOF fame potential, not to mention which ballot it's on.
Big stunner that he gets overshadowed by a QB who owns every record for his position, played in every game in his career, was the NFC Pro Bowl Starter and was expected by 99.9% of the known universe to return for another season.
If Sapp had retired a weeek ago, there still would have been only one or two articles, and ESPN and NFL.com would not have cared much for one simple reason.
You and about 6 other people not related to Sapp are the only ones who care.
Edit: Sour Grapes comment removed because it was a stupid thing to say. Sorry.

As much as I don't like to say it...I think Sapp, a 7-time Pro Bowler, will make the Hall of Fame. If not on the first ballot...then certainly the second ballot. He redefined the way offenses schemed against DT's both as a pass rusher and a run stopper. Prior to him DT's were primarily thought of as fat guys who could "clog up" the middle of the field. The QB pressure was something that was generated from the DE's and LB's. 'holic...you mentioned a TE from Miami... Are you thinking of Keith Jackson? From Philadelphia? Jackie Harris went from GB to Tampa Bay. And Andre Rison was brought in b/c Robert Brooks (one of the starting WR's on the '96-'97 team) had a season-ending knee injury and they needed depth at WR. Wolf viewed FA much the same that Thompson does...I think. And that is that it's just one tool to build a franchise. It shouldn't be relied on heavily b/c it IS a gamble. Wolf brought in high-profile guys that worked out like Reggie White, Eugene Robinson, Keith Jackson, and Andre Rison (arguably). He also brought in guys that were questionable and never really panned out...Raymont Harris, Ron Cox and Seth Joyner.
