Here's why UWM has played two non-Division I opponents so far........
In a perfect world, UWM's schedule would consist of almost entirely Division I opponents, with a healthy dose of those playing in Milwaukee.
But as a mid-major, that's just not a reality.
Here's how Lundy described the thought process behind opening against a Division III team, then playing an NAIA school.
"When I got the job (late March) there were only three games scheduled – at Purdue, at Iowa State and at Rhode Island," he said. "There wasn't a home game on the schedule. We had eight to schedule and I can't express to you how many hours were spent putting the schedule together. It took the entire summer and almost into the school year to get it completed.
"This particular date, the 12th, a lot of teams use this weekend for 'buy' games. There's lots of stuff going on if you just look through college basketball, and there just wasn't anybody that was willing to come here on this date. We thought we had it a dozen times and it fell through.
"We ended up, through some creative scheduled, getting seven of those eight at home. If you're going to become a good mid-major program, you've got to get home games. Nobody will ever realize what goes into it. We tried for a long time to get a Division I opponent (tonight). We just couldn't find one."

I posted the following in the "2022-23 Ticket Info" thread in response to comments from fans not wanting to go to the North Park game, but it is more appropriate here:
This is another reason why the non-conference schedule was so bad this year. It was one thing to schedule D3 and NAIA opponents early, when fans would show up regardless to see what the newly constructed Panthers look like, but to have yet another this late in the season does not have much value. Also, it seemed like we had to wait forever to host a peer opponent, and then bang, bang, bang - all of those games in a short period.
It I was in town, I would ask Bart Lundy about scheduling in the 4 or 5 minutes I would have with him after a game at Goolsby's. What has he learned about scheduling after his first go-round prior to this season? What does he plan to do different next season(s)? Could he explain why he said to be a good mid-major he needs a lot of home games? With several mid-majors only a bus ride away that also express difficulty with non-conference scheduling, why not agree to home and homes with some of them?
It would be awesome if one of you could try to solicit his response to these questions and report back on here. The North Park post game would be a perfect opportunity.

I'm going to predict a modest 3-2 record for us in this upcoming road trip. Rhode Island, Detroit, and Oakland should all be winnable games. Cleveland State and PFW will be our first real HL tests.

I think the 2023 schedule works with a roster that has 13 new players. I think it allowed to build a chemistry that still is building. Go Panthers!!!

I think Coach would say he would prefer not to have a non D1 team this far into the season, but if the alternative is not playing what other choice do you suggest?. Number 1 priority has to be UW and MU every year with home and homes eventually.

If it could not be done this year, I would like to know the real reason why it could not be. Seems like other mid-majors have the same "woe is us" commentary when it comes to non-conference scheduling. I would like to hear a commitment to getting it done starting next year.

Bus ride should always be the goal for student athletes. With the exception that they should schedule in the Bay Area / West Coast once in a while so that I can see them play .

And as long as they're at it, make a swing down to the state of Arizona. There, we already have the Panthers' future non-conference schedules figured out. That was easy.😎
