UIC fan here, so I have no skin in this game. Just an observation. Jordan probably wouldn't have taken another offer (or even been offered one at a high major) if it wasn't Butler. We all know how loyal Butler is to their own. Hiring a former player and 3-year assistant coach seemed like a "no-brainer" to me. I know it sucks for you guys and the carousel continues. What's everyone preference for a new coach: an assistant at a successful high major or a proven head coach at a low major (or D2, D3, NAIA)? qualifications include: - A Pulse
- Able to identify a basketball in a lineup of other athletic equipment
- Ability to frequently, enthusiastically, shamelessly kiss the butt of a person wholly unqualified for her position, and remind her hourly of her greatness and how much you love her.
To that end, here is a photo of the leading candidate for the position:

Let's take all 700k of LaVall's buyout and throw it at Tom Crean(I say this jokingly). I know that you're joking, but I still don't think that it would be enough (no sarcasm intended). When he was at Marquette, he reportedly wouldn't appear at an event unless there were at least 250 people committed to attend. So who would coach games? Sent from my SM-G930R4 using proboards

He was on an episode of the podcast Pardon My Take the other week and actually came off a lot more likable than I thought he would be. But hey, he's getting paid Millions to not coach at IU so maybe he's feeling nostalgic and wants to come back and coach another Mid-Major team from Milwaukee(Not insulting MU they were just in C-USA at the time). In all seriousness I am interested to see where Crean does end up after next season.

But other that I would prefer a high-major assistant who's from the area and recruits it well.

I found some footage that should be instructive for our next coach about how he (or she) needs to interact with the boss:

Once I heard that, I lost almost all hope.

This is going to be a very difficult position to fill at this point. This is now 2 seasons worth of lost recruits, and potentially an even MORE bare cupboard that when Jordan was hired. I am sure some of his recruits will follow him to Butler (if given the opportunity), and any that were in the Milwaukee pipeline will likely now look elsewhere. 2 seasons worth of lost recruits? Vall let Max Curran out of his scholarship because he didn't think Curran was good enough...everyone else stayed. I'd hardly consider that a lost season worth of lost recruits. I'd be shocked if anyone from our class went to Butler. There's a huge gap between us and Butler. Maybe we have a Kyle Weaver on our hands but I feel like if one of our guys were good enough for Butler, they'd already be committed to DePaul or something instead. We literally just got a guy who was next in line at a highly successful Big East program...and we did it in a year where we were paying another coach. I suppose the attendance drop could impact what we can offer, but assuming we can't get a similar caliber candidate when we're off the hook for Jeter and someone else is paying us for our coach seems odd. Amanda definitely has egg on her face after that one...hopefully Mone removes all doubt and makes the hire again. I'm okay with his previous pick.

To be clear, whenever you lose a coach, there is essentially a "lost year of recruits" due to the loss of the relationships with those recruits. That isn't always the signed players, either, and it isn't one "literal year" either. It just means that a vast majority of what was accomplished in the previous year for recruiting is gone with the coach. In this case, we have that now 2 years in a row. A lot of what Team Jeter was working on went away (along with some of the roster, too), and now a lot of what Team Jordan was working on will go away also. As for the potential for his recruits to Milwaukee following to Butler, it certainly is possible if he was as good as some here were proclaiming him to be. You would think that he was recruiting players of a high enough caliber to play for a bigger program....otherwise, he probably wasn't as good as many here said he was in the first place (which I think is unlikely).

Butler had 6 commits in their incoming class. Even if they lose 2 there will still only be one spot open. If we lose recruits I don't think it will be to Butler. Alderson is really the only one I could see ending up there.

What's everyone preference for a new coach: an assistant at a successful high major or a proven head coach at a low major (or D2, D3, NAIA)? I generally agree with you. I would not say Butler would have been the only job Jordan would have taken at this time, but the only one in which he would have been the top choice. Unlike certain posters on this board, I do not think he was necessarily looking to escape Milwaukee. As I stated a few months ago in the third post of this thread, I have been an advocate of hiring a well spoken coach who has had a proven track record of success at a lower level. That formula led to our glory days with Bo Ryan and Bruce Pearl. Tom Billeter of Augustana (SD) still comes to mind. www.goaugie.com/staff.aspx?staff=11. I do not recall for sure, but believe he was interviewed for the vacancy last year. Linc Darner is a recent example of success through the formula. His second year at GB was not as impressive as his initial campaign, and he has been dealing with some player turnover issues. I am sure we wouldn't mind though if a comparable candidate would shock the world by wining the conference tourney in his first year like Darner did with GB (although a certain few on this board would attribute that to conference weakness). However, given the late timing and the need to be a good fit for the present environment, if there is another Jordan-type available, that may be the best choice at this time. Is that Todd Townsend? I don't know enough about him to know the answer (but won't hold his MU background against him!). He would certainly have a better chance of maintaining the current roster and incoming recruits. We will see. Hopefully soon.

It just means that a vast majority of what was accomplished in the previous year for recruiting is gone with the coach. And then replaced by the new guy bringing in his own connections...so it's pretty much a wash. On paper, the HS guys Vall brought in were among the better ones we've recruited recently. Again, there's a huge gap between us and Butler. It's possible that some of our guys are good enough for a "bigger program" without being good enough for Butler. He's not gonna let those other programs know on his way out of town. I've read that Alderson may or may not leave based on who we hire...but odds are very strong he's not replacing Kyle Young (#86 recruit in the nation) at Butler.

Billeter is interesting. Also Gary Greszk...as you state a formula that has worked...Bo Ryan from D -3 Platteville and Bruce Pearl from D -2 Southern Indiana. If we believed hiring a coach from these levels would usher us to the WIAC I beg to point out these two success stories....key is the real deal..a guy who can coach and has proved it..not taking a flyer on someone who was an assistant or assistant head coach but ends up personifying the Peter Principle..someone with leadership talent and PR talent, not a stiff

Don't hire Todd Townsend (or anyone else) on an interim basis. It's late in the game but not THAT late.
