I'll take the Green Gulls over Panthers any day of the week. As it is right now, I like to simply be known as Milwaukee Basketball (not unlike Marquette with the fans' large rejection of Golden Eagles). Anyway, I know this isn't the point of this thread, so I'll stop that now.
I love the "Fire Rob Jeter" comments on the JS. I look forward to those idiots clarifying how a broke athletic department is going to buy out his contract.
Get back downtown if it's at all possible. The KC was a spectacular failure.

I really love how people at this board are so quick to trash another guys' ideas despite giving absolutely ZERO rationale for why things should remain the way they are. Frankly, anyone who finds the Gulls discussion to be "Marquetteish" probably shouldn't even be participating in a branding discussion in the first place (especially when returning to an older, more unique identity is the exact OPPOSITE of what MU did).

Should be interesting to see what kind of deal we get since we need the Cell like they need us. The Cell is far from perfect but its a hell of a lot closer than what the KC is. Also enjoy seeing that renovating the KC is now a backburner issue.

Well now hang on a second here . I don't think a name change to the gulls would be a bad idea for branding at all. I was referring to the whole idea of having an impassioned mascot debate amongst the fan base is very Marquette of us. Quite frankly, worrying about who the mascot will be is a luxury that Marquette has, that we simply do not have at this time. Marquette knows where they will be playing the next ten years, and where the money is coming from. We have plenty of big fish to fry, including bigger problems even in the category of branding. I yearn for the day when we can say our mascot is now our biggest issue at hand. In the meantime, moving back to the cell temporarily takes care of one of those bigger issues.

^ I hear you... the only reason I even brought it up in the first place is because it's part of the larger branding issue that should be one of our next priorities after the Cell issue is taken care of. Obviously I agree getting back to the Cell should be first and foremost, but since there's no point of even following the team anymore if you don't believe it's a matter of "when" and not "if," I don't see what's wrong with looking ahead. Especially when every thread created this year is full of random Seinfeld quotes.

we all agree there are issues with the Milwaukee brand, but i am still failing to see how solving those issues would in anyway at all be solved BY CHANGING THE NAME OF THE BRAND!
Is panthers original, no you are right it is being used by other schools, but in a circumstance where we are already struggling to not look like we don't know what we are doing as a program i don't see how a name change helps that in any way...
Im not saying that you can't like the idea or anything like that, but the reason why no one else is coming up with alternatives is cuz no one really sees it as the same issue. Let's take care of our issues first before we start making new ones.

i think everybody is over playing this whole branding issue and where the team is playing. i think the only issue there is with this basketball program is the product that's being displayed ON the court. clearly two seasons ago when we were horizon league regular season champs nobody was really complaining much about who our mascot was even last season when we were an above .500 team with 20+ wins no one had much to say about it then either. and if there was a team worth going to the KC to see play this season there wouldnt be much discussion about moving back to the cell. its all about how the team is performing not how many other programs have a bigger arena or the same mascot, there are plenty wildcats, plenty cardinals, plenty bulldogs and yes plenty panthers but as long as your program is doing well the only name that matters is the name of the university. that is our issue and that should be our only focus right now. get back to playing good basketball and everything else will take care of itself.
