en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McColl-Richardson_Field$45 Million for a new football stadium. If we could get a football stadium for that amount, my view on football at UWM changes. A lot of people want the idea of football at UWM to die, but I think the discussion needs to be continued, especially since our standing in basketball will decline with the departure of Butler from the HL.

Per football: as we stand today, it's not happening. I expect Geiger's tune would change if there were mandate from the student body and alumni in the form of mega-donations or an approved mega fee increase from students. I took it as "it's not realistic with what we have right now, so we need to focus on what we can be at this time." There is no mega-donation, no mega boost to the student fees, so it's being tabled.
Football, and I've said this all along, is the goal, not the task at hand. We're on the 20-yard line, and the football program is the end zone. We've got time on the clock, there's no need for a hail mary touchdown right now. We need a first down. It's just like real football. We can throw up a hail mary and there's a chance it could stick, but there's a chance we could be stuck in the same place on second down with less time on the clock, or worse. Run the ball, make the dink-and-dunk passes.
To get a first down, we need to fix our brand as the Milwaukee Panthers, get our house in order, find the best conference we can fit in and get the university community excited to be involved in the program.
We can still score a touchdown.

Our standing in basketball will decline with the departure of Butler from the HL. After hiring a men's soccer coach, getting our coaches on the same page, fixing our long-neglected brand, undertaking capital campaigns for baseball and basketball facilities (somewhere near $60 million combined) and working with architects on plans for a new arena, Andy needs to begin searching for another league in which to play if expansion and re-structuring isn't handled correctly by the league office.

I certianly hope you're right, because if football is officially dead, then so is my support for Milwaukee athletics and I'll join the growing number of people who want the athletic department scrapped altogether. WHY do we allow short-sighted baby-boomers to make all of the important decisions in this city?

Football isn't dead. It never will be. I get too many calls and e-mails from wishful donors to believe it's just going to go away.

Jimmy, if that's the case (and hopefully it is), how come the athletic department has never polled 2 of the most important groups: alumni and season ticket holders. I know we're only on the 20 yardline, but with conference realignment under way, we don't have the luxury for a wait and see approach. We gotta throw deep....... If they asked me to add $100 or more on top of my basketball season tickets for a downpayment of Football, me and many more fans, WOULD JUMP ON IT. Dragging our feet will only limit us to the D3 level when we finally get on board.

There is a small group of alumni (and I think a couple of students) who are preparing for that very push. A group that I'm actually not a part of, but have told them I'm interested in helping where I can. If you send an e-mail to jimmy@pantheru.com, I'll get you in contact with them.

Dragging our feet will only limit us to the D3 level when we finally get on board. The only way we would carry D-III football would be if our athletics program dropped to D-III. In D-I, we would begin in I-AA FCS. There is no alternative. You can't start in I-A FBS at all, and can't gain entry unless you carry an invitation from a conference. I'd assume we'd get a MAC invite if and when we do add football.

Thanks for the clarification Jimmy...........just frustrated. Will they department ever seek alumni/season ticket holders feedback? They have done a survey before, which dealt with branding. Told them what I was telling them for years, that fans prefer "Milwaukee Panthers" over any other incarnation by a considerable margin. And yet...

Thanks for the clarification Jimmy...........just frustrated. Will they department ever seek alumni/season ticket holders feedback? I got a phone call at the end of the season to ask my opinion on things, changes, improvements, comments, concerns. So just give them a call.

How can you guys possibly think we could sustain football when interest in athletics is so lackluster at UWM? Right now I could see a drop to Division 3 or completely ending athletics before football. Its also amusing that arm chair coaches seem to know better than the former AD of Ohio State.
Not to mention the current political climate in Wisconsin is fundamentally opposed to any expansion of government. That includes the UW system, which is shrinking dramatically in funding. Any mention of football would have to demonstrate and prove a long-term self-sustaining system and completely no burden to tax-payers. You'll have a really hard time arguing that as all of the arguments I have heard are day dreams and unproven figures.
Get the athletic department's house back in order, build an on-campus basketball arena, and focus on developing our current sports with a new baseball stadium and track. That is a massive plan that may not even be realized in the next ten years.

I'm in the boat of Forget About Football...
I say we focus on what we have and improve it first.
