Or, rather, that the penny-pinching towards athletics in that day meant that there was no immediate replacement for Chuck Lang's position, like there was for Deanna D'Abbraccio (Kathy Litzau was promoted rather quickly). Instead of hiring a replacement for Chuck, they let his position go unfilled from his departure in 2007 until Charlie Gross was hired in January 2010. Are you sure that the position was left unfilled by the choice of the department? With continually shrinking state support for the UW System, and the revenue reduction caused by the ongoing general financial crisis at the time, leaving the position unfilled might have been a cost-saving measure dictated to the department as part of a broader budget reduction exercise.

Charlie Gross? Nah, we need to think outside of the department. Charlie is good at his job (crunching numbers), but he thinks to small sometimes.
Here's a list of 5 candidates that would be great for the job.
Mark Wright, Managing Director-Athletic Development - Marquette - He's the one responsible for raising all of the money for the new basketball arena at St. Louis. Also was finalist for the AD job at Cleveland State last year.
Craig Pintens - Senior Associate AD-External Operations - Oregon - Previously interested in the job when it has been open, a native of West Bend.
Steve Gearhardt - Senior Associate AD-External Operations - Northern Iowa - Previously interested in the job, Northern Iowa has been pretty successful over the years.
Mike Freeman - Associate AD-External Operations - Butler - If you can't beat them, hire them.
Kathryn Statz - Associate AD/SWA - DePaul - Well respected senior administrator in the industry, has ties to the city of Milwaukee.
All of these candidates have the ability to connect and build relationships with students, alumni, and fans, which seems to be a quality that we are all looking for in the new AD.
Bill Carollo would be great candidate as well. I second that motion.

Mark Wright is a name that jumps out at me immediately, because he had applied when I was on the S&SC that hired George Koonce. He was one of my round of final 5, but we didn't have enough votes and I lost out. It's funny - that named just JUMPED out at me.

Paul Plinske is a name that still jumps out at me (13 national championships), if he'll still have us.

We need people that “get it” to choose the next A.D. Perhaps, some ideas and lists could me emailed to Chancellor Lovell.

Blackandgold, thanks for the kind words. I'd love to share my years of working in collegiate athletics and assist in the search, unfortunately, I live 2,000 miles away.
All of the candidates I listed could do some great things. Our department has great potential, there just needs to be other changes with the administrative staff besides another change in the AD's chair.
GhostofDylan, I agree Plinske is a great candidate. I fear that we already blew our chance to get him. He should have been hired the last go around. If somehow we can get him, kudos to Lovell.
MUPanther, no on Kevin O'Connor. Athletic Directors rarely have a background in sports information. Of the roughly 72 AD's hired in Division I Athletics over the past 4 years, I believe only 2 (Miss St & Jacksonville) were former Sports Information Directors. Besides that stat, I just don't see Kevin as a candidate, like I said earlier, we need to think outside the department.

What about Dennis Krause's pick in Kevin O'Conner? No. Needs to come from outside (despite the recent AD hires).

Krause's point on the roundtable was UWM went on the outside on the last two and it failed, why not stay on the inside.

Krause's point on the roundtable was UWM went on the outside on the last two and it failed, why not stay on the inside. For the last 2 you could have probably argued that the department was in ok shape. Its clear that it is not the case this time, so of all the searches, this one makes the most sense to go outside. I wish Bud would have groomed someone for the position like a good leader usually does. I think in order to attract someone to this you are going to have to bite the bullet and let them chose their own Men's B-Ball coach. Its the flagship of the program and I think will be the measure of success for any AD. I know the money is too much but if you want to make this an attractive job, you need to let them hire and fire coaches.

After having a kid in sports at UW-M for four years, I think there several glaring problems here, but they can be fixed.
1. AD - Due to a chancellor (Santiago) that didn't really care, we never really had the right person here for the job. Now that Lovell is here, in spite of the fact that he missed on Costello, he should be given a chance to find the right person. Give him credit for getting rid of Costello once he realized he wasn't the right guy. The new person needs to be local, who has a good business sence, and the right vision as I lay out below. Forget about previous experience and follow the UW and MU model for all I care. This is crucial.
2. Facilities - we need to have legitimate D1 facilities for all of our sports. A new athletic village is a must. Henry Aaron field is an embarrassment - truly - to the entire conference. Our student athletes deserve better, and without good facilities we are stuck in the Horizon League and will always be the red haired D1 step child of Wisconsin.
3. Horizon League - once we get facilities, we can do much better than the HL. We are a huge university that sells itself short on sports. It could be a tremendous brand for us in a bigger/better conference, but we treat athletics like an expense vs. a marketing tool and an asset.
4. Football - once we get the right AD, improve our facilities, and move into a new conference, we can then start thinking about football. We are too big of a state not to have more than one D1 football program, and it can be a money maker along with hoops. We can't think about it, however, until we can do the rest of sports right.
If we don't follow this plan, we are stuck with underachieving as a D1 university, and the student athletes, who do so well here and make the university proud, alumni, and fans are getting short changed.

I nominate Jimmy.
I don't think Pintens would be interested, then again I could be wrong. He and GK had regular discussions.
