With the NCAA 68, NIT 32, CBI 16 and CIT 24 postseason tournaments I got to think we land a spot as one of 140 teams playing. Unfortunately it won't be the tournament we want.
We are better than what we showed last night and it would be a good thing if we could have a chance to get this taste out of our mouths and end the season on a better note.

I think we are on the bubble for getting a post-season berth. Let's face facts: We are (at best) the 5th best team in the 14th best league in the nation.
Before getting blown out by the #118 RPI Team last night, we were #117 in the RPI.
Sure, you can make an argument for us being in a post season tournament, but this isn't exactly a stellar resume. If we do play, expect us to pay for the privilege.

Which one is pay-for-play? Because I doubt we'll be in that one.

Which one is pay-for-play? Because I doubt we'll be in that one. Neither unless you want a 1st round home game. Your team will earn an invite, the CIT expanded to 24 teams last year. Jeter might pass on the oppurtunity to make himself available for other coaching openings. These lesser tournaments might maybe make more sense for a young, building team, than a veteran bunch like Milwaukee that was carried by 3 seniors. To be honest, whether to accept an invite should be left up to the players. I think the exposure is good for the conference.

The CIT actually makes perfect sense for a program like Milwaukee's on a number of levels. Rob has already said that the team will accept an invitation if it's extended.
Here's my current projection:
Butler -- NCAA Valparaiso -- NIT Cleveland State -- NIT Milwaukee -- CIT

Valpo didn't get an NIT invite last year with an RPI of 71. However, I don't see Butler winning @ Valpo. They just lost there by 12 a week and a half ago. Valpo-NCAA Butler-CBI CSU-CIT Milwaukee-CIT

Valpo is guaranteed no worse than an automatic NIT bid if it doesn't win the tournament as the league's regular season champion.
That's why Milwaukee was in the NIT last year.
And Butler will be in the NIT at least ... they'd be damned fools not to take the back-to-back national runners up with an NIT-worthy resume.

Butler might make the NIT for promotional reasons, but their RPI is 50 spots too high to make an otherwise legitimate NIT argument.

If we do play, expect us to pay for the privilege. Remember, folks, that we can work out a trade with the organizing group: participation in the CIT or CBI in return for participation in a preseason tournament like the College Basketball Experience. This way, there will be no entry fees incurred.

GB BB can answer this better than I can, but I believe it gave the Phoenix a couple of good opponents the following year ... and a couple of lousy ones.
In reality, these consolation tournaments are designed as an award for outgoing players and as a trial by fire for returning ones.

VCU went from winning the CBI to going to the Final Four. I'm sure that win-or-go-home experience the previous season helped them for the following year.

GB BB can answer this better than I can, but I believe it gave the Phoenix a couple of good opponents the following year ... and a couple of lousy ones. In reality, these consolation tournaments are designed as an award for outgoing players and as a trial by fire for returning ones. We played in Gazelle Group (The organizers of the CBI) tournaments after each of our CBI appearances. It gave us 7 games. We had 1 lousy opponent, Samford. The other 6 were quality opponents with RPI's of 3, 45, 47, 64, 111, and 115. The experience with the CBI was a positive one. I wish we could have won a couple more of our close games and gotten back to that tourney, though we weren't expecting that this year. However, I doubt your postseason invite comes from the CBI. The years we got CBI invites we had a RPI of 71 and a RPI of 107 with a win over Wisconsin. Your RPI in 129, easily high enough for the CIT, but your RPI and resume is likely just short of the CBI. I don't know much about the CIT other than that it only invites mid and low majors, and that a 3rd of last years field had an RPI lower than our present 143 RPI. They have told us we're in consideration for a spot, but I'm guessing that's a long shot. It would only happen if you turn down the invite. Wright St turned down an invite last year, which I think is a mistake.
