I see that there's already some fan unrest on the jsonline blog.
The game was an incredible eyesore, but I believe that's mostly due to Kyle Kelm's ineffectiveness and especially the absence of Tony Meier and Kaylon Williams.
For that reason, the game mostly lacked any kind of continuity or flow.
Here were a few real positives gleaned from the game:
* Ryan was very active and demonstrated on a nice touch on his 3-pointer and free throws (7 of 8). That's an immense improvement over last year.
* Ja' Rob looks stronger in the arms and legs. That should help him maintain a more consistent jumper and more durability over the course of the season.
* No one is going to exert more energy than James, who talked of getting better every day in practice in spite of the absence of Kaylon, Tony and Lonnie.
* After such an uneven and disjointed outing, the Panthers get to take the court again Monday against Northern Illinois. No better tonic for getting better.
* Evan has the sweetest free-throw stroke of any Panther I've seen in our Division 1 history and they were able to get him the ball at will in crunch time.

The biggest difference between Hill and Kelm was that Hill was a project, while Kelm was recruited to play early on in his career.
To score 0 points and get out-physicalled (not a word) against a D-2 team is worrisome when he will have to face players like Andrew Smith, Eli Holman, and Alec Brown in the post.

Van McNeil was definitely awful. I believe he also said "Ryan Allen at the line for Southwest Minnesota State" sometime in the 3rd or 4th quarter. I thought Brainerd was horrible with the Brewers, but I actually like him as the PA guy for Panther games. You know they only play 2 half's in college basketball. The jumpball, he said "no wait, it's just the Panthers ball, no jump ball"

Dont disagree that Kyle was more highly regarded and though of as more D1 ready. But I think that after last year we all know he has a long way to go to be D1 ready to play the 4 which is the only position he is suited for. Players come along all the time that people think should be ready to step in and play and just are not. I will save everyone the Milwaukee list from the last few years since its brought up often here.

The fact that he does not really have a position is really the problem IMO. To slow to play the 3 and to soft for the 4/5. Idealy he grows into a 4 player because as a mid major program you need thata 6'7 to 6'10 4 that can strech a defense with a 3 point shot. But until he is comfortable with his back to the basket he is nothing more than a tall 3 point shoter that is a bit of a defensive liabilty.

The more I think about it, the more I think some of Kyle's performance could simply be a very off night. Not that I have huge expectations of him, or am trying to make excuses for some of his defensive blunders (some of them were pretty bad).
I think I need to remind myself that he's only a sophomore, and isn't used to playing 30+ minutes a game and being a vital part of our post play. He no longer has Anthony Hill across the blocks garnering most of the attention down low. His role on this team has become bigger and more important, I hope it doesn't take him too long to adjust.
We can't forget that this is the same player who had 9pts 5rebs in 12 minutes against Detroit last year. As well as multiple other games of 7-8pts in limited minutes. He can play at this level, he's proved that much. I think this year with him being our "big", he'll need to work even harder to have a consistent presence and the production that we expect from him.
Kyle, I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt. Come out on Monday and show us what you've got.

He looked a little out of it. I think Kyle just needs to shake it off and get out there and fight for a better night.
I also trust him to understand this and know it's better.

The saddest day of my life was the day the JS introduced a comment section. My God, Milwaukee is full of morons.

What concerns me is not that Kyle had a poor game. It's not that James was just 2-9 from the field. The thing that concerns me the most is the passive offense that is often on display. Settling for long jumpers, especially against a team like Southwest Minnesota State is truly troubling. I don't know if we're poorly executing our offense, or if it's simply a flaw in the offensive strategy. When you allow Ja'Rob to just dribble around picks and look for a shot, you're going to get a bunch of ill-advised threes or long jumpers. If we can't learn to pass with a purpose and do more off the ball, then we'll get throttled by teams like Michigan State, Marquette and Wisconsin. It's just too easy for quicker, more athletic players to pressure the ball handler to the point of settling for low percentage shots.

I hope it doesn't take him too long to adjust. Seconded. Kyle's got a new body. I hope it doesn't take him too long to figure out how to best use it.

Where did the Panther banners go? They were all taken down at the Cell. What did the old ones look like? We couldn't see them from our seats.
