Unless you're using Haarsma's FT% as a proxy for the teams, I think the FT shooting at today's game is being overblown. Even with Haarsma's poor performance at the line, our free throw shooting was still good, and significantly better than our historical average. A frame of reference: The last 10 seasons we've averaged 68.7% from the free throw line. Our 10-year standard deviation is 1.94, meaning that the likelihood is that we would shoot between 66.76% and 70.63% this season. If we were to carry tonight's average of 73.3% through the entire season that would represent a 2+ standard deviation event, and is very unlikely (assuming the distribution is normal). Couple that with the fact that since the mid-1960's mens college basketball players have made 69% of their free throws, and the national average has never topped 70% in a single year. That makes the 73.3% in a game sound pretty darn good, FRANCIS. Fixed I love it....

Favorite quote of the day:
"I can play a lot better," James Haarsma said after scoring nine points and pulling down 17 rebounds in the Panthers' 71-65 victory Saturday over Division 2 Southwest Minnesota State.
James may be undersized for a post player, but no one's going to outwork him.
I will say that the team really needs to tighten up its defensive rotations.
I'd also like to see a lot more of Evan Richard and Demetrius Harris.

Kelm was terrible today. A healthy Meier will hopefully replace him in the starting lineup. He's basically a 6'9" perimeter player.

I think Kyle needs to do some serious soul-searching after today's performance.
Largest guy on the court and he didn't score a point.
Special mention to Mitch Roelke, who looked better than either of the other backup point guards.

Special mention to Mitch Roelke, who looked better than either of the other backup point guards. Roelke gave us a nice little spark near the end of the half. For some reason we didn't go back to him in the 2nd half though. I would've liked to try to ride the hot hand while it lasted.

I'd also like to see a lot more of Evan Richard and Demetrius Harris. Great quote by James and I look forward to watching him play this year, he is an animal on the glass. In the post game interview, one of the Panther coaches had a comment about James i thought was noteworthy. He said that James would have had much more productivity offensively had some of his "bunny" shots dropped. He said that James routinely gets those shots to drop in practice, he got them to drop in the MVC, and its only a matter of time until he is re-acclimated to game speed after his year off and those shots start dropping. Like others, I was a bit disappointed with Kelms play. He needs to be more assertive on offense. I wouldn't have minded seeing Demetrius log some of Kelms minutes today. I would love to see more Evan Richard, but it seems like a difficult task in selecting who Evan subs in for. Especially when JaRob and Ryan are playing so well. Shaq Boga's play was uninspiring. I like his confidence, but wished his play would have yielded more than 3 fouls and a turnover. Hopefully he has a better outing Monday. My hat is off to Mitch. Tremendous job today.

Kyle Kelm was just terrible today.
I don't understand why Harris only played 8 minutes?

Kyle Kelm was just terrible today. I don't understand why Harris only played 8 minutes? +1....It just seemed like Kelm was late on a good amount of defensive helps and things that led to the Mustangs late surge, especially with them getting to the rim alot. Kyle had 7 rebounds, but I remember at least 2-3 that were when people like Ryan Allen and Ja'rob were crashing the boards and the ball somehow just bounced to him...so it wasn't like he was owning the boards. Saying all this, it is only the first game and he can only go up from here. All in all, I am happy about getting a win and can't wait for Kaylon to come back on Monday and Meier to get healthy.

Clearly, the plan is for J.J. to redshirt. Look forward to seeing him as a fifth-year, 23-year-old senior.
Having said that, this team simply needs more interior presence than just James, whether that comes from Tony upon his return, Demetrius getting more minutes or Kyle finding his inner power forward.
I suspect that most of the team's shooting woes were precipitated by the absence of Kaylon and Tony. The Panthers' performance on the other side of the court was much more alarming.

This is a bit off topic as far as the game goes... but does anyone know if Bob Brainerd will still be doing our PA announcing? For some reason, the three pointers just weren't the same yesterday without hearing, "FOOOOOOR THREE!!" I'm thinking he may have just been doing something for the WIAA playoffs yesterday?

Bob Brainerd was doing a WIAA playoff game on Saturday. Van "the man" McNeil was terrible. wisn.cityvoter.com/van-mcneil-wmyx-99-1-fm/biz/103942He didn't talk at times after a basket. Always said the wrong team who made the foul. Who is the guy that did the Parkside game? Why could he not fill in?

Van McNeil was definitely awful. I believe he also said "Ryan Allen at the line for Southwest Minnesota State" sometime in the 3rd or 4th quarter. I thought Brainerd was horrible with the Brewers, but I actually like him as the PA guy for Panther games.

I some what expect Kelm's career path on the court to follow Hill's. Not that I am expecting him to be the player Hill was in his senior year, but that would be great. But rather that his 2nd year will be a difficult transition year where expectations are high but performances will vary wildly. There is a major comfort level required to play on the post and there are both physical and emotional challenges that need to be addressed by him. I just hope Jeter can recognize the games he is stuggling to get Harris more minutes and games his is on stride so he gets the additional minutes.
This game sounded ugly overall but I have low expectations until both Tony and Williams are back on the court. They are clearly our top 2 players and when you take the top 2 from any team they will struggle on both ends of the court.
Lastly, its a bit troubling to hear about Shaq's struggles but I think my expectations were to high for him as a freshman. Good to hear Evan is living up to some of the praises heaped upon him since last fall and he might be the player I am most exicted to see play.
I can wait until I am back home to see the game against MU. This team should be hitting their stride and should let me see what kind of team we will have this year.
