That was a good point regarding the Butler and Valpo fans. I would think attendance will be ~6500.

Supposedly there's a pep rally tomorrow, though the fact that I've only heard about it secondhand is not encouraging for its success.

As for student attendance, It will be MUCH better than a reg. season game, but still nowhere near where we need it to be. Many of my friends don't even seem to care. Our students just arent as excited about this team as they should be, and i dont understand why the hell not.

Yet another reason we need to put a herculean effort into building school spirit, besides winning.

Media at the Bucks game last night said on Twitter that 11k was a joke, more like 6-7k. That said, my guess would be around 6.5-7k. Not as much as in past tournaments (because of the initial WOW factor, and consistent winning thereafter), but still quite a lot. I'm hearing more about the Panthers on 540 (as long as it's not Homer), and WSSP actually interviewed Jeter the other morning. The increased JS coverage is more important, and if we have a couple more articles before Saturday, I think we'll have a nice crowd. I can't stand Homer as well. He's so far up MU's and UW's a$% I can't see how he can have that nickname regardless if he's the announcer for the g-eagles.

Because they're all Wisconsin fans. Or, the other prevailing attitude is that bazketxball iz stupid brah Why the hell did they come to UWM then. Whatever happened to school spirit I'll tell you exactly what happened to school spirit. First off, there never was much. The football team was never good, so people didn't go to games. Football got good in it's last couple years, which was too late to save it. Our basketball program has shouldered the load since. At the turn into the 80's decade, the school dropped from D-I all the way to eventually D-II NAIA. Bud Haidet likes to tell the story of his first men's basketball game, when he could count on his fingers the amount of fans in the stands. So he made the decision to go D-I. It was a popular move in those days, with the last 25 years or so doubling the amount of schools in D-I. The university faculty was behind it, but they wanted measures taken to prepare the university for Division I. For instance, the faculty believed we needed to pursue and on-campus baseball stadium, and rebuild the Klotsche Center, as neither sport had a facility that was worthy of a D-I program. But we forged ahead with going Division I anyways. We didn't use the move as a fundraising effort; what we should have done was go to all possible donors and say "Hey, we're gonna move up to D-I, but we need to get this stuff ready first and we need your help." By the time we moved to D-I, we had been in D-III for most of the decade, and when athletics finally made the move, the rest of the university stuck in "D-III" mode. That's why we have no school spirit. First, in 1974 we cut the biggest sport for school spirit; when that was gone, basketball in D-I was all we had, then we lost that. When we came back to D-I, the campus didn't get excited about it; they had been burned before. So for ten years, we had the occasional big game (usually against Green Bay), but we didn't really have much of a following until Bo Ryan came, and then Bruce Pearl picked it up. We attracted a lot of people who like winning, and when we started losing, they left in flocks. True school spirit, the kind that can keep a train from completely falling off the rails, exists in small pockets. But there's not enough. At schools like Marquette, where there is a committed fan base that exists in all corners of the university, they can suffer through years like 9-22 and still have the attendance and following to get them through to the next year. We, on the other hand, have seen our attendance cut in half over time because those fans who have left either have done so for legitimate reasons (i.e. finances or moved out of town), or dropped their tickets because they are only about winners. Every fan base has those people, and that's not who we want to grow. What we need to grow is the group of people that are on here and are Panther Backers no matter what the record is. Look and see who renewed their tickets after 9-22 and you'll see, we have a group who will be there til the end. We need to find out how to get more of those people.

Jimmy, the same can be said about almost every single sports entity in the nation. UW football had horrendous crowds in the 70's and 80's. Even Michigan football before Bo Schembechler restored the pride fell on very hard times with their fanbase. I'm not poking at you--just saying that people aren't as willing to spend money on a product that doesn't produce, and that hasn't changed over time, nor will it ever change.

I completely agree. But there's a group of our fan base that has stuck around through the thick and thin, and if we're going to get better as a program, we need to grow that section of the fan base now, when things are good.
Wisconsin's attendance bottomed out around 5k; if we can get things going, it would be nice to make that our basement.

Last season's run by Butler helps the Panthers and other teams in the Horizon League.
I couldn't tell you how many people did not know that Butler, Milwaukee and Green bay were in the same league.

The way it looks now we are NOT going to have 6 inches of snow on Saturday. Snow is never good for attendance.

However, and I think you would agree, this program has come a long way in the past decade in regards to fan support. I think we are working towards a 5k bottom, but obviously we have a ways to go until that goal can be achieved. I hate to use this analogy--but Rome wasn't built in a day.
