Valpo's on a roll. First place in the conference. But is anyone actually all that impressed by them?

Yes.
With rare exception (Toledo), they win the games in which they're favored.
After what we've witnessed so far, that's impressive to this Panther fan.

But any conference win this year has to be treated with a bit of a grain of salt, at least until we get closer to the end of the year. The entire league is bafflingly inconsistent. A win at Detroit would have been really impressive a couple of weeks ago, but not these days.

I'm not saying they're bad, mind you, I just don't know what to think about them (or anybody else in the Horizon) at this point.

Here are Valpo's league results for this season:
Valpo 68, at UIC 66 Valpo 66, at Loyola 56 at Butler 76, Valpo 59 at Valpo 79, Youngstown State 55 at Valpo 64, Cleveland State 58 Valpo 71, at Wright State 60 Valpo 78, at Detroit 68
Man, I would love to be "inconsistent" like that.
And Detroit lost big to Butler without Eli Holman and by 10 to Valpo with him. Face it, Detroit's loss to us was its aberration.

Hopefully we can pull out this win as I don't think were gonna beat Butler twice...
I really don't wanna see us go 2 under in conference play so winning this one would be huge. At this point I just want to finish in the top 6 so we can at least get a 1st round home game in the Horizon League Tourney.

This all feels so four years ago.

At this point I just want to finish in the top 6 so we can at least get a 1st round home game in the Horizon League Tourney. Last year a 10-8 conference record got us the #4 seed. And we're currently only 2 games behind the second-place HL team in the loss column. I don't understand the mentality that we're a lap behind in the conference race. And Detroit, currently losing by double figures late, is about to drop into a tie with us in the Horizon League. If we win tomorrow and Green Bay loses (which is likely, considering they'll be playing at Hinkle) we'll move up to fifth place.

I wouldn't call it a "lap behind" mentality as you basically said what I was saying. Say we do move up to 5th like you said then we are still only getting a 1st round home game. If we could end the year in 2nd I would be stunned but at this point I still think Butler and someone else will end up with the double byes...

Anywhere from 3rd to 7th is up in the air at this point, and there's not that much difference between either -- just like last year. We overestimated the entire league, not just ourselves.
20 wins is out of the question, but our 20-win total last year was misleading, given that it was attained in the postseason and that our conference record was barely over .500. 20 wins didn't make our year successful last year; our great late-season push did. And that's something that could definitely happen this time. We finish with a bunch of road games, yes; but three are against bad teams and one is against Cleveland State, a game we should be angry for.
Lot of time left.

our 20-win total last year was misleading, given that it was attained in the postseason I agree. The often cited 20 win season last year has always seemed a bit watered down to me because it was accomplished with league tourney wins not in the regular season. How is Valpo's perimeter D? Is there a reasonable chance our Panthers will get some open looks from three?

"We overestimated the entire league, not just ourselves."
Sorry, can't let this go. What are you talking about?
The league currently has three teams rated in the RPI top 50 (Butler, Cleveland State, Valpo). Never before in its current configuration has the league placed even two teams in the RPI top 50 (the closest was in 2008-09, when Butler was rated 24th and Cleveland State 52nd).
How "overestimated" was Wright State? Or Green Bay?
In fact, the top of the league is more rugged than ever before. It's the disappointing seasons staged by Milwaukee and Detroit that have prevented the league from advancing into the RPI top 10.
Don't impeach all league members because of the underperformance of a few.
