MU, UWM closing in on basketball deal Marquette University is in serious talks with both the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and UW-Green Bay about beginning non-conference series, with a MU-UWM series possibly starting as early as this upcoming season.
Both series, if they come off as planned, would feature each school playing four games at the Bradley Center, with MU playing at the U.S. Cellular Arena and the Resch Center once.
"We're actually in talks with both programs," said MU coach Tom Crean on Thursday afternoon. "Our stance has been, and continues to be, the precedent was set with the contract UWM signed with the University of Wisconsin. We would be willing to do the same type of thing. That's where the starting point is and that's where we're trying to talk and see if we can make it work for everybody."

I would be VERY disappointed if we sign a 4-1 deal.

I have made a few calls to see if I can get any further info on this. Anyone else with some inside info? I just have a hard time believing that we would do a 4-1 deal....

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!1!111133^*#& We're better than that. We should be past the point of whoring ourselves out to schools like Madison and the Golden Chickens (of all teams) like poor man would do, just for one home game. Maybe 4 or 5 years ago we were this desperate (like when we signed the Madison long-term deal, which works out to a 3-for-1 today) but not anymore. Disappointed would be the understatement of the year, if you ask me.

from what i heard, we are talking right now and thats all......things are being discussed, and i would assume that the reason why nothing haas been said ywt on what is gonna happen is because they want the 4 for 1 and we are not interested in that kind of deal, for obvious reasons that we already know about with another in state school.... what i would really like to see would be to have a state school tourney....us, GB, UW, & MU.....granted there would have to be a set up later in the season just due to the fact that if we would play GB it would be considered a counference game, but it would be cool to see if there is any chance of that one day happening......one day my friends, one day.....

I'm not going to get too worked up about it being 4-1 if that's what happens. Remember, all the games will be in Milwaukee. Marquette has a hard time selling out games against Big East teams. There will be plenty of tickets available -- one way or another -- for Panther fans.
All in all, this is good.

Tom Crean was just on the Peter Brown show confirming that MU has offered Wisconsin State a 4-1 deal. If I were you guys, I'd accept, b/c it looks like we're turning the PR battle around

Well, Milwaukee has to decide if it wants to clutter up its non-con schedule with a mid/low Big East team for that long.

I've heard that we are working on a deal, but it is not a standard deal at all. Something very "outside the box".
It does involve us playing at the BC next year, though.

Could u imagine if we played at the BC this year and then at home against MU the following...that would mean both UW and Marquette at home...that would bolster ticket sales right there with at least two sellouts

And I love it how Crean has already begun the spinning of our long term deal with Madison as a straight "4-for-1" deal, when it is nothing of the sort. From the interview posted on JSOnline's site... Crean said his understanding was UW and UWM are currently working under the parameters of an 8-for-2 deal, with UWM playing eight games at the Kohl Center. "Evidently that works for all the schools involved," said Crean. "And once that precedent has been set, it makes it very hard to talk about anything less in the sense of being at Marquette." Ninja Please... It's pretty much publicly acknowledged by all three schools involved that UWGB and UWM, as part of their new, long term contracts, agreed to play Madison two games up front in 2002 & 2003 in order to set up Madison's current scheduling rotation of the other three in-state schools (two @ the Kohl, one on the road, per year). It's now effectively a 3-for-1 series for as long as the contract's last with both UWGB and UWM. Hence why Madison plays at the Cell in 2007 and 2011, and will continue to play at the Cell in 2015, 2019, and so on provided the contract is renewed. That would be a 3-for-1 contract, in case you went to Marquette and you're having trouble following along. To say that we are in a 4-for-1 contract simply because you can add up that we played at the Kohl 8 times compared to 2 at the Cell in a given time span is semantics and a half-truth at best, and completely dishonest at worst. But hey, he did say that it's just his "understanding", of the situation, right? Now's where's Chicos at to continue to perpetrate Crean's spin on this subject?

Well, I'd love to see this game actually happen, because this is a rivalry that is in desperate need of being built. However, this is about the worst time to do so, as well as the worst way to do this. Milwaukee is, for the most, part re-building. It would have been awesome to see this in the last 2 years. Also 4-1 is insulting. As though avoiding a game these last few years wasn't proof enough that MU* looks down their nose at Milwaukee, this would be it. There is NO GOOD REASON this couldn't just be done with alternating years. True, it would still be in Milwaukee, but with the student section, ticket sales and the like, one team would have a clear advantage. Bud and Rob need to make it known that UWM will fight for a home-and-home series, even if it means denying this offer. As much as I would love to see UWM play the Showers, a backhanded offer like this one is just disrespectful to the program and not even worthy of consideration. On a stretch, a 2-1 might be acceptable, but really the only reason I say that is because I want to see this game happen so badly. Again, this just goes to show how MU* sees the team and school as lesser-than. *-when I say MU, I am refering to those in charge of scheduling these games, many of the students, faculty, etc. want this game to happen.

dude... take a step away from the high horse, you've been to 3 NCAA tournaments in 100 yrs, that doesn't put you close to MU in terms of history. You also play in a not so good conference, no offense, you had some good teams these last few yrs, but those are the best yrs in the HISTORY of UWm, and they couldn't compare even close to MU. So before you think you're on par with MU, take a closer look...
