Panthercub's post in a different thread:
i really don't see Andersen starting and i would be beyond stunned if Holt or Young starts, especially Holt. his height is a major hindrance for the Swing and i don't see his talent level high enough to start, especially if he's still a walk-on. i just don't see Jeter a) selecting a walk-on as a starter and b) not giving him a scholarship knowing he'd be a stater. i highly doubt Young's progression has furthered that much for him to be deemed a starter. Paige has a legit chance and i don't see why Mauldin won't start. i've been told from a good authority that Ricky will be a 4 yr. starter.

Holt? that is crazy! Hansen is the starter (to start the season). Young...maybe? But I think Messiah showed more promise than young. I don't know why no one likes Smith. He is a very good defensive player and has great moves to the basket. If he can learn to finish he could be the team's best player.

I believe the reason for hesitancy on Smith is "wildness" so to speak. He needs to calm down and learn how to take direction, but I do agree that he has good defensive skills.

ok guys let's try to keep all the lineup talk to one thread instead of constantly spilling it over onto other threads.

I think Messiah is a good player, he just really lacked assertiveness last season. He hardly ever put up a shot or drove to the basket. Like he was too timid or something. Seemed like nearly everytime he got the ball he just passed it off right away. Plus I think it took him time to figure out the system. wish he would have been redshirted or something.

I couldn't agree more about Messiah's lack of offensive aggressiveness, but that could have been due to 4-5 other factors. Joah Tucker, Boo Davis, Adrian Tigert, Chris Hill and depending on how you look at it, Allan Hanson. I guess it's hard to judge Messiah based on last year. Hopefully, with the multiple scoring options gone he'll be more aggressive.

Kevin is not playing for the Canadian National team. I believe the person your referring to is his cousin Vidal Massiah. I heard Kevin was working out with Denham Brown this summer.

As I try to move to my new apt. I was thinking about the year ahead and thought it was a good time to break and lay out my thoughts so bear with this because it might be a bit long.
Here are some thoughts I have for the team next year.
The front cout guys seems easiest to determine since we dont have many of them. To me it seems the only true lock for starter is Paulsen due to his size and proven abilty to play at the D1 level already. If Mauldin is healthy I look for him to start along side Paulen, if not Skinner gets the nod that simple.
The back court is tricky at best. We have a few guys that are in the program that have also proven they can play a bit with Al and Avo. Add in the fact that Kaylan has been in the system a year to learn and develope has to give him some advantage too. Then there is the much Franklin who we have been talking about since the day he signed looking forward to the day he gets to play. For this reason I must admit I will be dissappointed if he does not get the nod to start either at the 1 or 2 spot. Swiggett has been my sleeper pick since he signed, he played on one of the top prep programs in the country and ran the point very well from all accounts I have heard and read. Seems he can play within a system (Jeter must love that) and can create scoring opportunties for himself also. Gentry has the making of being a very good player with his athletic ability. He seems like he can score from outside and inside and like to crash the boards and did a good job of that in high school. Massiah is intersting to me he had all the makings to be an impact player and it just never happened maybe he can assert himself this year and be the player we thought he could be. Young, well until he proves otherwise to me he has no chance to play big mintues for this team. Thornton redshirts in my opinion.
My starting 5 are: 1 - Al has proved he could play last year and is better suited for the 1 than the 2 spot. 2 - Ricky with all this hype the kid has be be able to play and with his explosiveness lets put him at the 2 guard. 3 - Kevin Massiah was voted preseason newcomer of the year for a reason last year and I think he could wind up becoming the leader of this young team this year. I know he can be explosive since I will not forget his dunk attempt he got hammered on last year at Madison. 4 - Paulsen should fill this spot nicely he has some decent size and from what I have heard can fill it up from outside which should fit the swing nicely. 5 - Mauldin gives this team the size they lacked dearly for the upcoming season. I know little about him but if he is healthy and can stay that way I think he can add a lot to this teams chances to compete for the conference again.
My Bench in some sort of order: Swiggett - could steal the job from Al later in the year in the team stuggles or if he is the player I think he is sooner than Al hopes. I think there is a very real possibilty of him being redshirted due to all the guards on this team right now. Skinner - could start if Mauldin is not healthy, but either way will play a lot due to the teams current lack of size. Smith - this kid plays great defense and I think a summer under the coaches eye will help him become more controled and effective on the offensive end. Gentry - another guy that could work his way into the starting 5 I believe by later in the year if Massiah proves me wrong and never learns to assert himself. I see a very good player out of him and outside of Franklin he excites me the most as far as potential goes. Anderson - maybe I am way off base putting him this low since many think he could start, but I just dont know enough about him. He has decent size and I have little doubt that he will see big minutes. Young- should get many chances early to prove he belongs at the D1 level and if he does I look for him to move up the depth chart if not there is no reason he should get minutes in front of the young guys. Thornton - I hope he gets redshirted since I see lots of potential in this late bloomer and think a year in the weight room and playing against the team will do him a world of good.
Bendall and Nick H. should see some mintues off the bench much like last year. The walk on from Cali I think will redshirt to get a free year of practice against D1 talent since I think he could contribute down the road for this team as must he if he made the committement to play here in Milwaukee.

Aren't we quick to annoint Allan Hanson a better 1 than a 2?
I think he is a fantastic point guard. Al passes the ball well and understands the offense very well.
It just seemed to me that last year, when Al was on the court, we were scoring a lot more, and we were stretching defenses. He hits that three, and opponents' defenses switch. He opened the inside better than anyone that is still on the team this year.

Not sure why exactly you think we scored "a lot" more with Al on the floor. I will give you that with him on the court did allow the team to stretch defenses more but he would give us that playing the 1 just as well as at the 2 this year. He is far more a point that he is a 2 guard where Franklin appears to me as more able to play either spots.

I think things are too up in the air to predict a line up.
1) I think we may go with a three guard line up. Whether we do or not might depend on how everyone looks.
2) You can't tell yet if someone wil redshirt or not. Remember that Avo was supposed to redshirt last year but played his way on the team. AND keep in mind that Jeter had to replace seven guys. He might stagger things a bit so we aren't faced with that situation again. In other words he might have two guys who he thinks are good but about equal and sit one for a year so we can use him later rather than split minutes now.
3) There might yet be more additions. In the last month we've seen Duetchman and Maudlin come. Who knows what else is out there?

Now that the roster is settled I would like to revise my thinking from 6-24.
Starters: Massiah, Mauldin, Paulsen, Franklin, Swiggett Reserves: Hanson, Smith, Gentry, Anderson, Skinner Spot Duty: Hansen, Deutchman, Bendall
I would redshirt Thornton so he could get stronger. Deutchman has already missed 1 year and we are very thin in the frontcourt so I'd get him some PT this season. He's gonna have to learn on the fly and from what I have read about him in west coast publications he'll do OK.

Not a bad overview. I believe that the first spot is the one that's up in the air between a trio of guys — Massiah, who apparently spoke to Sam during his recruitment; Skinner and Gentry. Who starts may depend upon where the opponent's strongsuit lies. In other words, Roman may start against a guard-oriented team and so forth.

I don't know, I really think that Al and Avery will be your starting guards to start the season. They have played together and know the offense. They will be valuable to have on the floor with all the new guys.
Let's not have too high of expectations of the freshmen, rememeber... it will take time for them to get up to college div I speed
