I'm not making any judgements on Kaylan's game, as I have yet to personally see him play...........but isn't/wasn't Majak Kou is on the Canadian National team? IMHO he is certainly nothing special (and can obviously put the ball in the hole north of the border). I guess what I am saying is that just because Kaylan showed he could score in Canada does not guarantee he will do the same here. With that being said, I have heard that Kaylan has a nice game and will definitley contribute...........lets just not put any undue pressure on him because of whatever he did in Canada.

as of now, i find Kaylan to be somewhat of an X-factor b/c very few of us know that much about him other than whatever we can Google on him. 30 brings up a good point about Kou and lets not forget that Simon Farine avg. roughly 25 ppg as a senior in Canada and he lasted one season up in GB. however i hold some optimism Kaylan's way in part b/c of the #s he put up at the prep school in GA and the competition he faced while practicing all this past season. he had no expectations besides bulk up and learn and hopefully he picked a few things up along the way. i can't wait for the season to start

What's very encouraging about all these discussions is that no one is saying, "Man we're going to be hurting at that position next year." We obviously have more talent than some people think.
The number of guards with good potential will make gaining a starting spot tough, and keeping it even tougher. I think we're going to see alot of rotation at the guard positions next year and those fresh legs can wear an opponent down.
The addition of Maudlin and Paulsen and Gentry gives the staff some options to work with. Will there be bumps on the road? Of course. As RJ and his coaches figure out the best combo for each particular situation we will have some problems.
But when all is said and done, I don't think the talent drop off from our experienced senior line up will be as great as some thought it would be. The question is how we will fare against improved HL teams like Loyola, GB and maybe Butler

I wonder if Jeter is going to play a 13 man rotation in the beginning like he did last year which drove me insane!!! But I am willing to admit it was probably for the best because he wanted to see what everyone could do. I am thrilled we dont have a "Memphis" game this year and hope we start out with some really easy teams. GO PANTHERS!

Don't bet on it. We are the first game in Northern Iowa's new arena, and while they lost Ben Jacobsen and McDermott, they're still dangerous.

Jimmy,
UWM opens the season at home for the John Thompson Foundation Challenge and will have at least 3 games under the belt before they travel to UNI.

I know, I was countering backer's hope that we would play a lot of easy teams early on.

taking from the Jason Deutchman thread....I think that Al Hanson, Avery Smith, K. Messiah, Paige Paulsen, and Kaylan Anderson will be the starting 5 (to begin the season at least), they are the only returning guys... so they know the offense. I I think these new comers will take time to learn the system. especially the juco guy (these juco guys seem to be missing basketball smarts) and the freshmen who are not up to D1 shape and savy yet and are still trying to learn the offense

I partly agree with raar. However, I really believe Ricky will start and Mauldin could very well start too. I can't imagine that Paulsen will or could be the 5 defensively. I believe the starting 5 will shake out to be Ricky Franklin, Kaylan Anderson, Messiah, Paige, and Mauldin. That's wishful thinking of course that Mauldin will be ready for the start of the year mentally and physically. Otherwise I'm afraid you may be right with Paulsen being the biggest guy out there. If Mauldin isn't ready i think Gentry will start. The bench order would be Avo, Al, Roman, Charlie, Tyrone, Marcus, and finally....drumroll please...Bendall...in that order.

coach invested a lot of time on the sidelines last season working with Al and Avery. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see them starting, at least early in the season. Al is a proven ball handler who has run this complicated offense on the floor in D1 ball as well as showing some ability to hit the three. Avery is a strong defender who has had some success getting to the basket - if he finishes a few more and cuts down on his turnovers just a little, lookout. I think the new recruits are probably going to have to play pretty well to take PT from either of those guys if they continue to improve the way they did throughout last season.

From what I hear, and it is reliable info, Mauldin got extremely good news from the doctor recently. Also have heard that he is working very hard in the weight room and on his floor work. I think physically he will be ready to hit the hardwood come Sept.. With that said, I think that Paulsen and Mauldin in the starting 5 is a good possibility.
the guard situation is going to be anybody's guess. I can't wait for the opener!

PC, can u relay the "extremely good news" to all of us?
i nominate panthercub for the role of "Mauldin's beat reporter". they seem to have a lot of legit info at their disposal.

The info that I got on Mauldin's knee is that the repair work that was done has healed. That is not to say that the knee is perfect, but it is strong and has good muscle tone. The doc has given Mauldin the OK to begin cutting exercises, he is already shooting jump shots. I haven't heard if he is jamming the net yet, but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he is doing that as well. I do know that Sam was in the weight room doing squats at 240 lbs. before he had seen the doc. Mauldin is a nice guy and would like to get to meet some of the student pop. at UWM, so if you are out and about, he would be glad to get to know you.
As for being any kind of reporter, I'm not. I certainly don't have inside info from the coaches or any of the staff etc. If I get legit info that I can pass along I will, if I am speculating about something I will let it be known that it is speculation. GO PANTHERS!

Starting three freshmen in the backcourt worked pretty well for Marquette a year ago. Here's what the coaches have said about Charlie, "He's essentially interchangeable with Ricky. It really doesn't matter whether we put them at point guard or shooting guard. Both can post up and run the offense. Charlie, after all, was the point guard at the top prep school in the country." With that info and Panthercub's input, it's fair to assume that four of the starters will be Ricky, Charlie, Paige and Sam. The fifth spot is still up in the air.

Just looked at the roster for UAB last season. Allowing for attrition, due to graduation, they still have quite a lot of experience to put on the floor this year. They have two players listed as forwards,6'7" and 6'8". Both players around 215-220 lbs. They were averaging about 25 minutes a game. Both players are able to score very well. Their numbers in rebounds and blocks were also notable. Sam and Paige would probably have a weight advantage, the other guys will have the advantage in experience. This does not take into account what UAB has aquired in recruiting and walk-ons. I know that one of the walk-ons is a guard that played at Shelton State the same year that Mauldin did. That year Shelton went to the Nationals in Kansas and finished 8th in the nation. Mauldin was not able to play in the tourney due to knee surgery. However, IMO, that team would have given many Mid-Major Div 1 schools a real headache. Also, a kid named Sharpe is transferring from Miss. State to UAB. This kid is 6'9"@235. The 2 yrs at Miss.State his numbers were very poor and he had some problems relating to the coachig staff. He also had difficulty maintaining eligibility (grades), so I can't guess at this point how much of a problem he would be. He is going to have to sit out a year in any case due to transfer rules. Somebody may want to check out the Wa. St. Cougars. I don't have any clue about them. GO PANTHERS
