i had thought the Panthers were likely to go 3-7 in their non-league schedule. They finished 4-6.
Last Thursday night, they had an easy win against a smaller (in both respects) Chicago State squad. The youth of the Panthers was on full display: the Panther rushed out to a 5-0 lead in the first minute, and then didn't score again for more than four minutes, then scored five more points in a minute and a half. In the latter stages of the first half, the Panthers finally got an a roll offensively and led by 16 at the half. They stretched the lead in the second half and won by 31.
Chicago State didn't come into the game shooting well, and at times the Panther defense was quite strong. Courtney Lindfors finished with six blocked shots.
Yesterday's game looked to be much more of a challenge. Toledo won the Women's NIT last season, and they came into the game with a 6-3 record, as opposed to the Panthers' 3-6. The first half of the game went back and forth, and the Panthers held a 3 point lead at halftime.
Toledo got hot and the Panthers got cold at the beginning of the second half. The Panthers were scoreless in the first 10+ minutes of the half, in large part due to the loss of Lindfors to a leg injury. After a brief "What do we do now?" period of adjustment, the Panthers buckled down, and outscored Toledo 32-13 over the rest of the second half, erased a 16 point Toledo lead, and hung on to win by 3, 60-57. Freshman Ashley Green played a key role in the comeback. Green finished with 16 points, second on the team to Lindfors, who came back into the game and finished with 19 points to lead all scorers. Angela Rodriquez contributed 14 points. Lindfors also blocked three shots.
The squad now has nine days off until their next game, the league season home opener against Loyola.
