Wow. Unless the incoming class is really good and starts contributing right away, the Panthers could really take some lumps in the non-conference portion of that schedule.
i wonder how many wins it will take for Coach Botham to regard the non-conference season as successful?

They will be an interesting team to try and predict. They played both Oklahoma and Michigan State very tough last year. They also played not so tough against quite a few other teams. There is quite a bit of talent on this team though. Hopefully, they can take that next step this season.

There is quite a bit of talent on this team though. Hopefully, they can take that next step this season. i'd take three or more wins vs that non-con schedule to consider it a good start to the season, provided that the team plays competitively in the games. A series of stompings won't help confidence any.
For me, the question mark is the front court. The back court seems pretty well set, both at point guard and shooting guard. Courtney Lindfors played well in the post at times, but was hampered by foul trouble. Beyond her, the experienced players were injured a lot last year. If Lindfors takes a big step up this season, that will answer a lot of my questions.
And if one or more of the newcomers play anywhere near as well as Angela Rodriguez did last year, the team will be competitive in the league schedule.

What is the point of this impossibly challenging non-conference schedule again?

OK, I'll be more direct.
Does anyone here think that this program will be able to navigate its way through the league season just because it loaded up on heavyweights in its non-conference schedule?
Or to put it another way: does anyone have any faith at all that the Panthers will overtake the mighty Phoenix, even though they theoretically recruit from the same pool of players?

Women's Basketball and Volleyball both seem to have a philosophy of scheduling a tough non-league schedule with the goal of preparing for the league season.
The volleyball team seems to have had more long-term success by doing this, having dominated the league for many years running. And it's not like they are the only squad in the league which does this: the other contending teams in the league also challenge themselves in the non-league portion of the season.
The basketball team has been much less successful in league play over the past few years, as compared to previous years. Last year they showed some improvement over the previous two years, but they were still seeded in the bottom half of the league. They needed to win two tough road games at the end of the season to get a fourth seed, and did not do so.
For a long stretch (which ended about three years ago), the team was consistently near the top of the league, and tied or passed UWGB on a couple of occasions. Green Bay's womens program has a long tradition of excellence, which is self-perpetuating.
i don't see how the basketball team could expect to surpass Green Bay without playing a tough non-league schedule, but clearly more is needed. It will be interesting to see how patient the AD is willing to be with the program, specifically, how much improvement will he need to see this season over last.

Just looked at the roster for 2011-12, and Danielle Jorgensen is back on it, but listed as a transfer. She will have to sit out 2011-12, but will play as a senior in 2012-13.

Western Michigan 69, Milwaukee 63.
Anyone want to revisit our women's basketball program?
Didn't think so.

And now it's on to Baylor (currently #1 in the polls) and Oklahoma (currently #16) for a couple of stompings. Then Chicago State and Toledo at home. They may finish 3-7 in non-conference.

Looks to me like Botham has some nice young players. I don't know if the program is on the upswing but I hope so. If I lived on the east side (or was retired) I would definitely make it over to the Klotsche to watch occasionally.

If I lived on the east side (or was retired) I would definitely make it over to the Klotsche to watch occasionally. The program has been treading water for the past few seasons, and not doing it very well.
A couple of the newcomers this season seem to be very good indeed, and Coach Botham already has a special player in Angela Rodriguez.
They are playing a very tough non-league schedule, with the idea that playing high major teams (Michigan State, Madison, Baylor and Oklahoma) will toughen the squad for league play. Botham has done this kind of scheduling for many years, and had a long streak of very respectable finishes in the league to show for it, up to about four years ago.
There has been considerable turnover on the roster and among the assistant coaches over recent years. i don't know how much of recent performance can be attributed to that fact, but it would seem to be significant. The most successful squads under Coach Botham had a lot of senior leadership. Player turnover has meant that there are few juniors and seniors on recent squads. With so many young players on the squad, i have to wonder whether or not playing such a tough schedule will have the desired effect on this year's squad, or merely demoralize them. But then, i am not closely connected to the squad, so my opinions are worth exactly what you are paying to read them.
If the program can stabilize itself this year, and get back to contending in the Horizon League, that would be a big step forward.
