No one posts on the thread I put this on, and I feel it is important to bring this up: uwmfreak.proboards5.com/index.cgi?board=Section&action=display&n=1&thread=514"But the real reason I logged on and needed to post. I am a grad student, I am older...27 years to be exact. My friends and I travel all over the place pretending we are much younger than we really should and go to sporting events, get loud, drunk, etc. What is nice is that we have the money to go everywhere because we are older, but now we are "gross old men". The student section for the season and especially the game against Wright State is deplorable. The rest of the crowd sits on their hands, but they are still "learning" how to be effective fans. But, they take their key from the student section. You need to be louder. That guy in the pic, while somewhat annoying, is exactly what the section needs. It only takes 3 or 4 people sporadically placed throughout a student section to get it all going, and in turn the rest of the crowd. I have been to Cameron Indoor and multiple other venues. What makes a game really fun is when eveyone gets into it. I am sick of watching girls show up and care more about how they look intead of getting loud. As a student section (quasi community), don't accept it. If they are not loud, tell them to get the f**k out. Be brutal, be honest, be loud. You think legit student sections of bigger programs stand for that garbage? I think everyone, myself included take for granted that we will be loud when the game warrants it (usually the last five minutes) or in the Horizon Tourney. It is fun at that time, but why not make it fun for the entire game. And seriously, the way the team is playing, they need our support more than ever. And what happened to the creative chants, the coordination, the flyers on the seats? Did those people leave? It is not that hard. Like last night, at halftime, when we had 4 girls doing the 3 point contest..WTF? A total of 2 three pointers were made, I started the chant, "That was boring..clap, clap, clap, clap, clap", because well, it was. It should not take an old coot like me, in grad school to make up stupid chants, etc. I am in my glory years, soon to retire from the drunkeness that has made myself, my friends, my website quasi celebrities in venues across the counrty. I mean seriously, at what age do you have to stop wearing 4 foot afro wigs and velvet capes? Who is going to step up and be crazy? I gave up my media credentials to be back in the student section this year. OK, they were actually revoked. But hey, I figured I would have way much more fun anyway. In closing, there is too much progress that has been made in this program to waste on an unmotivated student section. Do you even remember games were played at the Klotsche not too long ago? Remember how pumped you were to even have a game at MECCA? Wow! In 4 years and after the best season ever for UWM, the student section is piss poor. For shame. Sincerely, Preston Wietholter The Sports PhD www.sportsphds.com"

They need more cheers too. Seems we have like four cheers done every game, over and over and over and over again.

I don't want our school to be known for comments like that. If I would've heard it, I would've thrown you a dirty look too. Some kid started chanting "F--- Wright State yesterday" and I turned around and told him that we weren't Marquette. Be creative, not stupid... MU and UW's sections are dumb enough, let's not sink to their level. I mean seriously, anyone can think that stuff up. We're smarter than that. And while we're on the subject... there's a culture clash between the right and left sides of the student section. The left side is crazy... loud, supportive. The front rows of the right side are just as vocal... just less vulgar. It's not hard to get into a guys head. For those who were at the WSU game an hour early, you saw how easy it was to get into #32's head (forgot his name for the moment). The reason we cant get anything going in the section is because the leaders from the left side shoot down everything the right side wants to do (like "light it up, light it up) and the leaders from the right side don't want to do things like the "sex" chant. We also need one more cheer to throw into the mix when the Panthers have the ball. "Milwaukee, UWM, shoot for two... etc.." are not enough to cover every possession. I feel the younger guys think that it's to repetitive to chant "UWM" the whole game... thus, the silent moments. If any consolation, I think our section is more active than Madison and Marquette while the ball is in play... and we're definetely the best in the HL (as far as I've seen.) We just all need to get on the same page.

The best cat call I heard last night was from somewhere in section 324. Someone yelled at the ref "Go back home to the NFL where you belong"

ok jd i agree that "fire crotch" makes no sense. but the dirty sanchez did. how is that all that different than braided mullet? oh man that makes us all look really bad . i think people revert to f*ck "insert school here" is because we dont have other cheers to fill that silent void and people want to yell something. we're dancing around the obvious (well maybe the easiest to think of), why not cheer Let's Go Black!

And while we're on the subject... there's a culture clash between the right and left sides of the student section. jdbrew's correct on this. we want to do the "light it up, light it up" chant but they don't like it whereas I find the "sex", "condom" and "orgy" chants stupid. they're funny but it's juvenile and there's no way in hell i'm chanting it.

Maybe the older "of age" guys/gals can get the younger underage fans good and shined up before the games that usually removes the trying to be cool factor, plus you'll all be known as the cool old guys?

These chants were gifts from our forefathers sir. We did not create them. They have been chanted at UWM games for at least 4 years (my tenure). I'm assuming the cheer you're requesting is in line with the Bucks or possibly something to do with smoking. Regardless, I can't say that I have heard it. I will continue or yell your chant if I hear it. While I don't feel I should make excuses, I think I've pointed out to enough agreeing people that it is very difficult to do complex cheers when a large portion of our student section consists of 1st yr students. Hence we're limited to easy cheers that we all know (UWM, Panthers, let's go, Mil-wau-kee, Defense) or spell out and repeat chants. There a hell of a lot of possessions in a game and even our old days didn't cheer every play. We've been doing a lot more of the "Dukey hop" than in year's past. 6thman created cheer sheets earlier this year and I distributed them. To my dismay, not many were read. What can you do? In short, its great to have so many new fans. On the same page its incredibly difficult to organize all of us. The KK's used to have Hoffman or someone walk up and down the front row. At this time, this is logically impossible. I think the only fix for all of this is to unite the two sides with pregame gatherings. Nothing unites like beer. Keep screamin. We'll be ready by tourney time.

I think if you start the "Light It Up" chant you will hear people outside of the student section joining in and that might get the rest of the students to follow. Use it when we really need a bucket at first and maybe get the cheerleaders to lead it as well. Sure would beat the "Shoot for two..." thing.

I agree with fan. I remember the days at the klotsche when a guy or two would roam in front of the section and get the fans going on cheers or just to get loud. Even at first when we went to the cell this was still the case. This year there are so many more students and all the games and many going for the first time or have only been a few times. As this section fills out and students have gone for a few years they will want chants and some new 'leaders' will emerge in the student section. Like I said before, have no fear as I am sure the cell will be rocking for the conference tourny.
Also, the cheerleaders do not seem to lead the chants or get them started as in years past as much. Or when they do start one they quit on it very fast.

There are a number of reasons why things aren't coming together in the Student Section:
1. Everyone is so damn critical of everyone elses ideas for chants. It's to the point where everything is too vulgar or immature. Last I checked, the FCC doesn't regulate our student section. Let me tell you all first hand, these are the things that drew people to our games and made them fun in the student section. Starting at soccer games with guys dressing idiotic and shouting hilarious comments at players. It made people new to the games laugh and have a genuine good ole college time! Yes, I agree that the F' bombs have no place...but let up on everyting and just let things flow a little more. Just loosen up everyone!
2. The cell is a lot different than the KC. Back in the KC, our group of krazies would march in the back door and be loud all the way along the court to the student seating and always set up shop in the front row on the floor. It was just known that we belonged there! It just doesn't work out the same way for the Cell. Maybe establishment of the Student Black and Gold can push to have a club section take on the first 2 or 3 rows across. It guarantees the best fans up front, best representation when on tv, and would give some serious incentive to join up with the SBGC.
3. If you want the draw you still need to create the buzz and the "Krazie Brand" of student section. There's reasons why we would be outside the dorms entrance with a megaphone on a gameday at 9am and being b****ed at by security. There's reasons why we would blanket the campus with flyers printed on University printers using the unlimited print red cards! Sorry, but college students are drawn to a rowdy fun time. That's what they're looking for.

fan, i might have worded my statement wrong so let me re-phrase. i'm not trying to call those who do the "sex", "condom" and "orgy" chants stupid, i just don't like the chants. the "light it up" chant is also in reference w/ the Bucks. i also give you credit for when you passed out copies of cheers to do as no one else has done it this season. i'm a big fan of the "you can't stop him" chant and i think we definitely should keep that up, along w/ "you can't do that". i'm ok w/ re-emphasizing the "fundamentals" chant but i know others have been wary on it since they feel it's a bruce pearl chant (no one i know on the board). i think instead of only chanting "boooooo" anytime he scores we let the old folks in 206 ( ) chant that while we chant "boo's your daddy *clap clap clap clap calp*". also emphasize "we want chicken" if we can ever dunk another basket. i don't think there's a clash between sides of the student section b/c we don't know each other but moreso we seem to have different ideas and just need to sit down and discuss to some agreement. I strongly encourage we do this b4 the Bracket Buster game.

Whenever the opposition has to pass the ball in, count to five. This always worked in past to get a 5 second violation. Either way, it lets the refs know we're watching. I think we had Wright State at 5 seconds at least twice on Saturday.
Also, keep doing the left right left chant whenever someone fouls out.
Finally, set the tone before the game. Get students there earlier. Get some chants going during warm-ups. Get chants going while waiting in line to get in.
Its all about creating the atmosphere.

What happened to yelling the names of the opposition whenever the pass the ball? That was classic last season, and really helped set a good home court advantage.
Wright State shot an air ball in the second half, and the student section didnt even chant "air ball." Every time that kid touches the ball we should be chanting that.
