I dunno if this has been mentioned, but has there ever been any consideration to having some kind of "cheer lesson" during freshman orientation. When i went to Wisconsin-Madison for freshman year, they did this for football, and it really got people pumped for the games. I know the August-November timeframe is a long gap, but just to get people thinking about the Panthers early.

When i went to Wisconsin-Madison for freshman year, they did this for football, and it really got people pumped for the games. I know the August-November timeframe is a long gap, but just to get people thinking about the Panthers early. this is a very good idea in general but there are a few problems with it and mainly it is due to the fact that there are many different university organizations that would rather see our athletic department disappear completely and they seem to try and help puss that along. i'm going to go out and start naming ones directly but if you have been here longer than a year and you are a sports fan it isn't hard to figure out what ones i am talking about. so as far as implimenting a "cheer lesson" in during freshman orrientation i think that it would work but i would be willing to say that if it is brought up to those who handle the whole orrientation thing, which i cna honestly say that i never attended when i was a frosh mainly because i drank way too much w/ my roomies that first week to want to do much of anything at all, but i am just saying that to do this it is harder than some might actually think.

at my orientation nancy attempted to teach us the "panther crawl" that we use during the fight song. Freshman don't learn well at those things.

If the perceived problem is that the left side and the right side just don't mingle or aren't on the same page, I think the best solution is a barrel Feb. 9th prior to the YSU game so the regulars can finally get to know each other, get juiced, get chants squared away and have everyone go down to the cell as one group. Right and left side in unison, everyone drunk, and everyone there before tipoff. problem solved A. How do we invite the Right? B. What place will hold this glorious event?

I don't know how to invite anyone in particular, but if "the right" has any representation on this board then they can pass along the word. I would be open to having it at my house, which is less than a 3 minute walk to the shuttle stop from the union! More details as things get put together, but I would be all about it, anytime after 4:00 on that thursday as long as we all leave around 6:00-or sooner. I have been on the right towards the front all year and i will admit there aren't too many other people besides those that I go with who are too into the cheers, but we still can't hear too much of what is going on from the other side of the section unless it catches on quickly

Dutchy, before you start pointing fingers remember that your announcer works for Recruitment & Outreach and that only a few years back(the last time they used the all day format) the cheerleaders did do chant session. The main reason it no longer happens is that about 75% of the new freshmen would skip out after lunch(I have to admit I skipped out half way through my orientation) and so they changed the format of orientation so that it would only be half as long. Because they cut the time many things that were thought to slow down the day, such as the cheer section, were eliminated. The secondary reason was that the cheerleaders would only do their chants such as U...W...M and Shoot the two ...or three, not exactly big pump up chants.
The most effective way to organize the student section is to create a stronger Student Black & Gold club. There needs to be meetings of the leaders outside of games to get a game plan going. SB&G has many resources, including printing and banners that the Student Association will pay for. SB&G also needs to recruite the new freshmen so they know what is going on and bring them into the leadership circle. I think the old guard will admit it takes more then just showing up to a game to make a strong student section.
I will admit I was not an active particpant in growing the krazies, but I have huge respect for the guys that did. When they first started I thought they were insane, but pretty soon I was swept up in it. They laid the groundwork for you, you just need to pick up the mantle

"the right" is myself, jdbrew, panthers6thman and lucidfateaway. there's also another guy and girl but they aren't registered on the board. which they should be. you know who you are . p.s.- it feels really weird being on "the right" since i'm always on the left ;D

would having some type of orientation meeting closer to "FAN-tastic Friday" or the exhibition games be a better idea then at the beginning of the semester?

A couple of ideas here.
1) The Black and Gold club could do some socials (read beer busts) to attract new members. 2) Rather than the best fans stacked up vertically on the left, why not spread them out horizontally so they are in front of the whole student section?

Dutchy, no offense taken. I was not talking about me being offended personally, and I do agree with you to an extent that some depts. on this campus think first of their dept. before what is best for campus. Many dept. heads still think of this campus as little fiefdoms, but I think that this attitude is slowly changing.
I think the idea of having an orientation before Fan-tastic Friday would be a good idea. I think a student superfan package would also be a good idea, since it would link all the hardcore fans together.

p.s.- it feels really weird being on "the right" since i'm always on the left ;D A liberal college student??? That's a shock. By the way, I think this sort of discussion is exactly what the student section needs. Leaders are not going to be effective if the only work is done on game day. Getting people together, working together, making an effort (like you are) is what will turn the student section into something special.

You need to meet weeks before the season begins. We use to have SBGC meetings even before Midnight Madness. Also, we always met weekly at the radio show and planned our week then.
When we first started we would meet with Pearl to discuss ideas to get students to the games. Perhaps a group of students need to start talking with Jeter?
Later, UWMfreak

"the best fans"
are you freaking kidding me!?!?!?!
That sounds like a good way to build a following of peope, rank them. Good call. Oh, and taking away seats in the front is ALWAYS advised to create a following. Just to throw this out there, but I don't really think organized meetings are gonna attract people. College students don't want organization, they want to get drunk and have fun. Not listen to "the best fans" b**** about how newer people are "in their spot". Comments and crap like this is why our group of friends, students, moved OUT of the student section this year. Stop ranking yourselfs, it gets old.
