It will be interesting to see if it becomes fact. I should clarify that it did not necessarily have to happen today. The source will remain anonymous.

I post rarely but do want to add my two cents...
Channel 4 reported on their 5 O'Clock sportscast that "sources say" Jeter will be announced tomorrow.
As soon as Pearl left, I thought of Jeter, for many of the reasons people here have already stated.
1. From Chicago area (Cannot hurt with recruiting efforts) 2. Played for a great coach. (Like him or not, you can't deny Ryan's long-term success.) 3. Coached under a great coach (See reason#2) 4. Coached under Crean (Again, like him or not, that's worth something.) 5. Was part of a successful program on the national level. 6. Is already familiar with the challenges he'll face at Milwaukee. 7. Father was a (very good) Lombardi-Era Packer. (That's gotta count for something!) 8. He seems to want be coach HERE and not just coach SOMEwhere. (Good luck, Matt!)
I'm not saying he's the only choice, but, without the benefit of hindsight, I think he's the best choice. Time will tell.
P.S. If we have to continue to hire new coaches every three or four years because we're winning so much, I for one will never complain. I hope the Jeter's the "next can't miss" coach everyone will be talking about at the 2009 Final Four!!!!!

Jeter never coached under Crean. He was at MU one year under Mike Deane.

Fox 47 Madison Reports on the 9 o'clock news---
UWM is working up a contract to offer Jeter. Reportedly, UW is offering him a raise to stay as an assistant.
Maybe some of the delay in signing is Rob trying to use some leverage to negotiate with UWM.
As we saw with Bruce, usually loyalty gives way to career advancement. Rob'll probably get as much as he can from UWM and then bolt from the Badgers.

Madison may not feel the same urgency to speed this up, inside the same UW system, as UWM did to counter UT's offer. And Jeter must not have an offer yet from UWM, as he doesn't meet with the Chancellor until tomorrow. (He might have an "as long as the Chancellor agrees" offer.) But if Jeter wants a top job, Madison can't come up with a counteroffer to that.
As for getting a meeting on the Madison campus on a Friday, well, I've tried it, and it felt like everyone there has a four-day week. But let's hope for the best, that there will be an announcement by the end of this week.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is also reporting that Jeter is the top choice, "University of Wisconsin associate head coach Rob Jeter, a longtime assistant to Badgers coach Bo Ryan, has emerged as the leading candidate for the head coaching position at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee." "Jeter was expected to have a second meeting with UWM athletic director Bud Haidet, possibly on the UWM campus, Thursday afternoon. If there are no glitches in the negotiations, Jeter could meet with UWM Chancellor Carlos Santiago later on Thursday and be announced as Panthers head coach as early as Friday. Jeter to UWM is not a done deal, however, according to sources." "I have not offered anyone a contract and I can't do that until after the person has met with the chancellor," Haidet said. "We're going to wait and see how the process goes with Rob." Haidet did indicate that Jeter appears to be the leading candidate for the job. "I like Rob a lot, he's an excellent candidate," Haidet said. "He is the associate head coach of a perennial top-25 team and he's had a great mentor in Bo Ryan. "Rob is well respected in basketball circles and when he was a member of Bo's staff here, he helped lay the foundation for our current success. All those things are strong points in Rob's favor." UWM reportedly is still in touch with the other top candidate for the job, Mike Dunlap, who has coached Metropolitan State (Denver) to two Division II national titles. He could be brought in for a second interview early next week if there is a snag in the talks with Jeter" Here is the link to the entire article, www.jsonline.com/sports/coll/apr05/315988.asp

Sounds like one hell of a deal...the more I talk to my stepdad about how Bo Ryan used to coach at Platteville the more I want Jeter...he wants to run the same 1-2-2 press that Ryan did there...so as long as its run and gun and talks to the students Im straight with Jeter.....so I have come around to the Rob Jeter fan club

I have mixed emotions, but I am warming up to the idea of Jeter. Maybe it's just a way of accepting it. He has his pros & cons. The cons being no head coaching experience, hardly known outside of SE Wisconsin, and this hire will make little news outside of the state.
I feel like to some degree we are starting over again and have lost the momentum we had from the Sweet 16 run. We had a day to enjoy it before the coaching situation took over, and it is still going on.
I was hoping for Doherty, but I guess with Jeter you know he'll be around for at least 4 years where Matt would most likely bolt after 2.
Either way, can't wait for next season.

My question is, if you are going to hire an assistant coach, why wouldnt you just hire Tony Jones. I thought they wanted someone with some Head coaching experience, but if you were going the assistant route i dont get why we didnt just go with the smooth trasition and hire Jones. but will see i guess
