The Panthers are looking like an 8th or 9th place team in the conference right now, which is right where they were last year. They haven’t played a good game since the Cream City Classic (btw, it looks like neither SEMO nor UC-Davis have won a D1 game since that tournament). The talk about Bart Lundy being able to turn the team around in one year is sounding VERY premature right now. Yeah, the team is 2-1 in the conference so far, but the two teams they beat don’t really look like D1 teams and the 1 they lost to was a 20 point loss against a team that (so far) looks like they’ll finish in the lower half of the conference. I know it’s human nature to look at a game like this and blame it on the 2 week layoff. Yeah, that has something to do with it, but that’s not the whole story. It’s human nature to look at the North Park game and justify the poor first half by saying we played a good second half. But it was also human nature to watch PBS’ teams stay within single digits of D3 teams and justify it by saying “they were working on some things”. At some point, excuses have to go out the window. Put up or shut up. I’m sick of losing. Maybe Lundy will get us out of this rut, and I certainly think he will be better than PBS, but that is such a pathetically low bar. This team is simply not that good right now. They could get better as the year goes on, but that isn’t the trend. Rather, the team has gotten worse since November. The Milwaukee Panthers are 8-5 (2-1 in conference) currently this season. I hope the record is a better indicator of where they’re at than I think it is. The 2-1 record in conference right now includes games against the teams that were (before tonight) were ranked 9th, 10th, and 11th in the conference in most rating systems. They started the conference season last year 2-2 without the benefit of a game against Green Bay or IUPUI (though they did have one against a bad RMU team). Again, I really hope I’m wrong, but I feel like the trend line for this team has been downward since the SEMO game at the Klotsche Center. I have more faith in Bart Lundy to turn it around than I had in Pat Baldwin last year, but that’s an incredibly low bar to surpass. At least Lundy has a track record of success.

Anyone know where Moses was?
Perhaps we need him to lead us to the promised land.

Just funny to see all you people act like total clowns this year. You all have gotten so high during wins and after we lose a game or look bad in a win the world is ending.
BUILDING A CULTURE AND WINNING PROGRAM TAKES TIME AND COMMITMENT.

Like I stated in this thread before the game, don't panic, and mcdade50 afterward, R-E-L-A-X!
Three of the four other road teams in the HL lost by double digits (none of which was IUPUI, by the way). The fourth one, conference favorite Fort Wayne, lost at Robert Morris by five.
Now that we are done with our terrible non-conference schedule, the key this year will be to perform well down the stretch for a change. Let's give this some time.

Oakland 83, UWM 61: Rest leads to rust as Panthers blown out in Horizon League reboot Todd Rosiak Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
The bumps and bruises are mostly healed for UW-Milwaukee’s men’s basketball team.
The Panthers’ game?
That’s a little rusty.
Having gone 17 days since last suiting up against an opponent – the second-longest such stretch for the program since moving to the Division I level – UWM struggled in every aspect in a game it led for only the first 30 seconds before eventually falling in humbling fashion, 83-61, at Oakland on Thursday night.
The Panthers (8-5, 2-1 Horizon League) shot a season-low 37.1% against a 2-3 zone while allowing the Golden Grizzlies to connect on 50.9% of their shots from the floor, a figure that matched the previous season high reached by an opponent as all five of Oakland's starters finished with double-figure point totals.
UWM also was more than doubled up at the free-throw line (8 for 9 vs. 17 for 23) and had 15 turnovers cashed in for 23 points by an Oakland team that had lost 11 of its 13 games on the season coming in and had dropped both its games in conference play.
"I think they learned that you've got to guard people," coach Bart Lundy said. "We've been guarding people all year. We'd had maybe a stretch here and there where we struggled. But for the most part we had been guarding, and we didn't do that tonight.
"They were the tougher team."
Ahmad Rand scored all 12 of his points in the first half and that total led the Panthers, who were playing their first Horizon League game since Dec. 3.
Jaylen Johnson was the only other player to finish in double figures for UWM, scoring 10 points.
UWM struggled against Oakland's 2-3 zone from the outset while at the same time failing to contain long-range marksman Blake Lampman, who scored 14 of his 20 points and hit 4 of his 5 three-pointers in the first half.
The Panthers trailed, 43-39, at halftime only to see the Golden Grizzlies (3-11, 1-2) score 10 straight points right out of the gate and 13 of the first 15.
"It was all defensive," Lundy said. "They said, 'We're just going to spread you out and drive you,' and that's what they did. If you don't get stops then you're going to play against a set zone, and we played against a set zone all night."
UWM cut the deficit to single digits at 62-54 on a steal and driving layup by Kentrell Pullian with 10 minutes 47 seconds remaining in the game.
But Oakland responded with six quick points and a 9-3 run that made it 71-57, and the Panthers failed to score over the final 6:10 of the game.
"We just didn't guard anyone," Lundy said. "You can't play like that, you can't defend like that and you can't expect any other outcome than this if you do."
UWM had last played on Dec. 11, with its last game against a Division I opponent coming on Dec. 6.
The Panthers had been scheduled to play at Rhode Island on Dec. 22 but saw that game cancelled due to a COVID-19 outbreak within the Rams program.
UWM next plays at Detroit Mercy at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Not gonna overreact. We came out like a team that hadn't played a D1 game in over 3 weeks. If they show up Saturday and dominate Detroit, well a 3-1 start to the HL season is really as good as we could of asked for. But not playing a game for that long really killed every single bit of positive momentum that we had. Word to the wise: We haven't beat Detroit since 2-22-2018. I wouldn't expect domination. MERCY! Who else here remembers last year's game at Calihan Hall? Last time I checked, Antoine Davis is still playing for the Titans. At this point, I'd just like to see our guys go out there and compete and have fun. Expecting anything more is a fool's errand.

Coach was right on the defensive side of the ball, they played horrible. Yes, they looked rusty. They're still a young team at the D1 level, and a team that's largely trying to figure out playing with one another, so winning on the road is going to be tough at this stage. Oakland's better than their record, but they were still beatable. As someone that's played competitive sports for years, I've never minded losing, but I've always hated losing when my teams didn't play up to the level of what we're capable...that's what happened last night - BIG time. The most concerning thing for me, is that with all this time off, one would think we'd have worked extensively on offensive sets against various zones. We've struggled against zones all year and we struggled again against the zone last night. There were too many attempted drives and lose the ball. We still commit some horrifyingly bad turnovers - so many of them aren't effort turnovers but just downright stupid. Following from work on ESPN Gametrack. How many layups has Jalen missed tonight?! It wasn't just Jalen. As a team, we missed far too many bunnies last night. Rand made two threes, but missed an easily makeable bunny followed by missing an alley oop. There were others as well, though I can't remember specifics.

It’s probably fair to say this was one really bad game in a stretch of subpar games, and it’s not time to panic. I suppose the last time Milwaukee made the tournament, they got humiliated at home against the 2014 equivalent of IUPUI. I’ve just seen this story play out so many times in the past few years that my first instinct was “this team simply isn’t good and they’re getting worse.”
My first instinct could be right, or it could just be a hiccup. Who knows?
But I do know one thing. I blame Pat Baldwin for this being my initial thought.

You got paid big money to come to Milwaukee so prove your worth."
