Hire a guy who might get hit with a show-cause penalty? Really?

So for the D2 candidates, NW Missouri St & Queens both won today and play again at 5pm & 4pm respectively tomorrow. West Liberty was upset by West Virginia St so Ben Howlett is available.

Bruce Pearl was on Pardon my Take (biggest sports podcast there is) Friday. A surprising amount of talk about UWM, good listen.

Just a refresher: Howlett coaches the frenetic, Grinnell-style, full court-press, line-change basketball; McCollum is the four-time NABC Coach of the Year and three-time national champion (his team went 31-1 two years ago, but the national tournament was cancelled); and Lundy is the former Marquette assistant under Buzz.

I would love to see that style of offense at Milwaukee. I know a lot of people on here prefer some of the other D2 candidates but this type of offense would differentiate us from other programs, in the league. He’s my second pick behind Weber (who still wants to coach and not be a AD).

That kind of gimmick offense is almost always a straight loser in D1 basketball. If you want to build a winning program, that’s not going to cut it with the kind of talent a Horizon program can attract, especially one in Wisconsin.

Style of play is so wildly irrelevant to me.
- Graduate your kids - Do right by them - Be an upstanding citizen - Win, baby WIN
Winning is the only thing that matters.

Anyone worried about playstyle is missing the plot, no one will care about this team unless they are completing for the NCAA tournament every year.

No one will begin to care about this team until it wins consistently. Given that we are in a terrible one bid league (whose tournament champion this year is a 16 seed in the play-in game) "consistently" competing for the NCAA is a far horizon no matter who we hire.
We are years away, people. That's the reality. If you want an instant winner go find a cheater. Otherwise, the only way out is to build the program step by step and year by year.
I don't trust our current University and AD administration to do any of this.

I think Cleveland State would beg to differ. So would Linc Darner. The fascination with Darner utterly mystifies me. In his last four years at GB, after he lost the Wardle players that took them to the HLT title and NCAA bid in '16, he went 69-67. His teams finished 4th, 7th, 4th and 3rd in those years in progressively weaker Horizon Leagues. This is a guy we should be looking at? Why? He proved that he couldn't recruit the talent to run his system in D1.

This is the Horizon League and not a Power 5 conference. Some Coach can come in here and win right away. That’s why I’m confused why no one on here wants an established and proven D1 coach looking to revitalize his career. Even Evansville fans (a private school) are campaigning for Tom Crean. That’s because with good coaching and a transfer or 2, you’re in the dance, outside of the Power 5’s.
What would Milwaukee record be this year with a better coaching staff?
