So maybe it’s time to start recruiting local. And why would no local player want to come here yet they go to the great campus of Green Bay. Straight up, you can't get local talent if you arent active recruiting local talent. Don't get me wrong. We SHOULD recruit locally and put a fence around Wisconsin. It would definitely help the program, and increase attendance. I just don't think this program is an attractive option right now. Hopefully soon. We just need a start off with hiring a good Coach, regardless of his ties. IMO

2. Why is it important for the next Coach to have state/WIAC ties? We only have 2/15 players on our roster from Wisconsin (1 was hurt most of the season and the other didn't play much). The top players in our state will not be coming here any time soon. The talent in HS basketball in this state, not just at the top but also in the volume of very good players, has never been higher. If UWM recruited the 2nd tier of talent in this state they would be fine. The fact that UWM only had 2 players from Wisconsin on the roster is an indictment of how awful Baldwin was. Cripes, just recruit the Greater Metro, North Shore, City, and Classic 8 conferences and you would have a team near the top in the Horizon.

Agreed. I've followed high school basketball in the state for 45 years and, although some guys certainly haven't panned out, we have never had more top-level college coaches coming to the H.S. games & AAU tournaments here. These are the glory years.

McCollum looks REALLY good on paper View AttachmentWent UNDEFEATED (38-0, 19-0) in '18-'19. 3 D-II Nat'l Championships 3 D-II Sweet 16s Exactly. You can see the arc of his growth as a HC. Coming into a bad situation, and growing with the program. The 2nd half of his time there shows a coach that has it nailed. I also like that he has stuck around for as long as he has. If he can give us 10 years before moving on to a Butler or Something, that would be great.

Have to admit I had never heard of West Liberty so I looked it up. It's a public college in a town of the same name in West Virginia. Strangely enough, it's actually about 30 miles west of Pittsburgh in that north south finger of WVa that sticks up from the rest of the state between Ohio and Pennsylvania.
McCollum seems like a strong candidate. Knows how to slow the game down and his record speaks for itself. I like that. Not crazy about any D2 coach who thinks he can come to D1 and racehorse his way to wins. That's generally not going to work. Would like to know what his plan is for effectively recruiting Wisconsin, which is ESSENTIAL. (Larry Reed, Harold Lee, Richard Coffey, Dylan Page, Jason Frederick, Adrian Tigert, Joah Tucker, Ricky Franklin, Anthony Hill, JJ Panoske, Kyle Kelm, etc.)
Lundy has a strange background bouncing between D2 and D1 and has not shown a consistent ability to win as a head coach. His association with Buzz Williams during MU's darkest off-court period is a red flag. Pass.
No real idea about Gouard.
P.S. If we send Zills anywhere with a contract make sure he's not using the calculator they use for attendance or we'll be paying the next coach two million bucks a year.

Who we reportedly recruit and who we ultimately hire are different things. Let's not get overly excited about tweets from so-called pundants. Some of this stuff could be mere agent-planted fodder to create a sense of urgency for more prominent programs that are also in hiring mode. It reminds me of free agency in MLB.

This is a great cautionary post, CP. We have to be careful, but it's understandable that this fan base is STARVED for something -- ANYTHING -- to be excited about. As others have said here and elsewhere, we just can't afford to blow this hire.

The cautionary note that EVERYONE needs to bear in mind is that NO MATTER who is hired, the program is still at the mercy of our AD in so many ways that the coach cannot control. See my signature.

Preaching to the choir!!! Hopefully she somehow hires a great coach and they do not renew her contract.

Who gives the approval to hire the circle jerk that is the Parker Executive Search?
Do they not have the resources or technical expertise in the AD office to conduct their own national search?
Perhaps I'm naive to the way the hiring world works today as it relates to coaches and ADs, but this feels like Amanda Braun scratching the firm's back (again) so that eventually they'll scratch hers.

One of my co workers here is Dan Fitzgerald, ex Marquette player. Asked him about Bart and he almost came out of his shoes. Says he is on the best guys around. Tough yet positive, super great personality, players loved him, smart coach. FWIW feels he would be perfect hire

Actually I am "somewehat blown away". I think it is very good. Would be thrilled with any of the 3 and also Shay, Prohm, Darner Agree, good list, McCollum, Darner, Shay not in that order but all would be home run hires. Both McCollum and Darner are proven winners at the D2 level. Both have uptempo systems that players love to play in. Edge to Darner because he was successful at more than one school and he has recruited and landed some good talent in the state and Midwest especially Chicago Lundy, Gouard are also successful but just not as McCollum and Darner.

Marquette people have no interest in anything that elevates our program. No one in the Marquette universe stated this more eloquently than Rick Majerus years ago.

It's Howlett who runs the uptempo, Grinnell-style system, not McCollum, who prefers a much more measured pace.
