That'd be *shocking* to me. The difference between Forbes' salary and Jans' at NMSU was ~140K. Technically correct on the "base salary" part...but almost half of Jans' salary comes from his retention bonus and getting 5K for beating UNM/UTEP/Power 5 Teams (worth 15K this year, normally more as Jans lost his first 2 games against UNM/UTEP this year)
Feels like getting Jans to ETSU is going to take 800-900K...and the idea of ETSU paying its coach about as much as Brian Dutcher and Randy Bennet are making is INSANE to me (particularly with everything going on related to COVID)

Mo Williams, a 14-year NBA veteran who won an NBA title with the Cavaliers in 2016 before entering the college coaching ranks landed his first Division I head job. Alabama State announced Tuesday that Williams, 37, will be its next basketball coach.
Lewis Jackson resigned as Alabama State's coach in March after 15 seasons. The Hornets finished the 2019-20 season 8-24 (7-11 SWAC) but have historically fielded solid teams. The program made four NCAA Tournament appearances between 2001 and 2011.

Smart choice for Alabama St. Mo Williams will probably be an awesome recruiter in that region considering he's from there and has the NBA pedigree. I really respect a guy that made 70 sheets in the NBA and still wants to go coach a low/mid-major basketball team for what is essentially ash tray money to him.

Let the mass exodus begin...
But seriously, what the hell are they thinking? New chancellor looking to cut costs? Or perhaps something was discovered? Guess we wait for more info to come out.

I'm guessing something was happening off the court. I wouldn't be surprised if they're going to try to fire him with cause for whatever was cause for termination. I doubt they can afford two salaries for that long.

I doubt they can afford two salaries for that long. How does it work exactly when a coach is fired? If he has 5 years left on a contract, are they paying him a portion of what he’s owed? All of it? Does it matter if he gets another head coaching job? As in would it actually work out in his favor to get fired with 5 years left on a contract, then get another job right away? For example, if he’s making $230K at GB and takes another head coaching that pays $250K. Is he actually making $480K until his contract is up with GB?

I think it depends on what’s in the contract and why he was fired. I believe UWM owed Rob Jeter the full amount for his last year when he was fired, whereas Cleveland State may not have to pay for Dennis Felton’s remaining time because he didn’t fulfill his end of the contract (based on what Cleveland State was saying, anyways).

According to the article from the GB Press Gazette.
“Per his contract, he earns a one-year extension each time his team finishes in the top four of the conference. He was signed through the 2025-26 season.
Darner’s base salary was $230,000 per season. If UWGB must pay the entire contract because it fired him due to performance, the school would owe him more than $1 million. If the school fired him with cause – such as violating an NCAA rule – they could get out of paying him.”
Sounds like there has to be more to the story...

Came on the board, I had no clue about this breaking news. What program fires their head coach on May 17th? Is there smoke on this raining day.
