Paul
Someone in recent post called Rob a program killer. Will not go that far. Geiger though almost accomplished that. I would say Rob is more of a "buzz killer" or wet blanket than actually putting a stake in our program. More like a thousand small cuts.

I signed on to post something about UWGB's seeding in Bracketology, on another thread. And noticed this post. Sorry, but I can't let this nonsense about Andy Geiger not be responded to. I've communicated many times to him by letter when he was the AD at MD, and by E_Mail when he was at OSU. Even, if he disagreed with you he treated you with respect, something some of you on this board should try.
When he was 32 he became the AD at Brown; at 37 the AD at Penn. Really trashy schools , huh? Sorry, but I never heard of him almost killing those programs. This is from Wikipedia: "Geiger accepted the head athletics position at Stanford University in 1979. During his 11-year stay at the Pac-10 school, the Cardinal won a total of 27 national championships and Stanford was considered one of the elite programs in intercollegiate athletics." Boy, did he almost kill that program! In 1990 he took over the MD program. This in the post Lennie Bias era, which was a very tough time for the University. When he was first interviewed after he accepted the job, I was listening to him on the radio while watching MD lose to Clemson in Baltimore's old Metropolitan Stadium. The type of decisions that Krivak made that day led to Geiger eventually firing him. Despite the tough times at MD he LED the refurbishing of Byrd Stadium, increasing its capacity about 50%. Boy, that really almost killed the program. As part of the refurbishment he decided to stop playing one game a year in Baltimore. He said, in effect games should be played on campus. (WHERE THEY SHOULD BE PLAYED!!). In Wiki's opinion he returned "stability" to the MD Athletic Department. I guess WIKI didn't think he almost killed the program. At OSU he made the hard choice of firing John Cooper as head football coach and brought in Jim Tressel. How did that work out? Or are you going to blame Geiger for the Maurice Clarett issues? This again is from Wiki: "Geiger's enduring legacy in Columbus was a building program that resulted in a number of new athletic facilities on campus, most notably the 4,450-seat Bill Davis Stadium (baseball); the 10,000-seat Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium (track, soccer and lacrosse); and the 19,200-seat Schottenstein Center (basketball, hockey) as well as a $194 million renovation & expansion of Ohio Stadium in 1999 & 2000." Boy, did he almost kill that program! Prior to Geiger's tenure the Buckeyes never had anything in Lacrosse. In his reign they made the NCAA tournament. Also he made the tough choice of firing his friend Jim O'Brien as head basketball coach for illegal payment regarding a recruit. He then hired Thad Matta. How has that worked out? (Yes, the firing cost OSU, but it was still the right thing to do.) Andy Geiger was a Great AD from Brown to the Buckeyes, and didn't "almost kill" any programs. He made the tough choices and lived with his decisions.

None of this happened at UW-Milwaukee.

When we hired Geiger I was really pleased. I do not disagree with anything you cite . His career is distinguished, he has been it appears a person of high competence and integrity. He is not a program killer and I did not say he was. What I said was he almost killed our basketball program. Basically, he came in and in a short sighted and I think arrogant fashion quickly made up his mind to move back to the KC. This happened very fast with little or no input from fan base and was sprung as sort of a May Surprise. It hurt morale of staff and team, outraged a good portion of the paying long time fan base. Was done very quickly and I think without a lot of thought. Set the program back even more and it will take some time to recover. This year season tickets are way down and will have to be built back up. Amanda Braun immediately almost the first thing she did was reverse this but major damage was done. Andy was paid $100,000 and what did he accomplish? He apparently was willing to stay longer but lasted less than a year and the new AD and staff could not wait to get him out of here. He also botched the baseball thing announcing they had a site (again prematurely) and nothing came of it. Pretty much a debacle other than holding down the fort for the next AD but actually hurt more than helped. He said we are a "pull out bleacher" school, and east side... no,, there is a huge alumni base across the entire metro area. Our huge potential fan base did not want a college experience relived if it meant playing in a D3 facility, eating stale popcorn and drinking soda with hardly any amenities or entertainment venues nearby. He was either tone deaf, lazy or lost his fastball at this last gig. He did not understand the background and situation here and arrogantly moved ahead and we all see the results. It is not personal. He is a good man but lets call it was it was..horrible at UWM.

So, Mark Belling was correct about Geiger and the move.

Whatever the motivation, the net result of the move back to the Klotsche Center was a knee to the collective groin.

He has had 2 bad seasons, and should stay here as long as he wants to. So, to you 14-16 is good enough? 17-14 is good enough? Seasons like that are just as useless as 8-24 and 9-22. The man has had 3 good seasons with his own teams and couldn't coach up his team enough to beat Butler when it counted in each of those three seasons. Don't give me that crap about Butler going to the championship game, either. They only got that far because we choked in the HL Tourney. Especially in 2011. We beat them TWICE that season, once by 26 goddamn points! But when the biggest spotlight was on Milwaukee, coach and team looked like a deer in the headlights. The same thing happened in the 2010 tourney. Ricky Franklin had a Herculean effort at Hinkle in the final game of his career, but ran out of gas with 2 minutes left. It's Coach's fault we never have a backup PG, a capable one could've helped Ricky play at least one more game. Again in 2012. What a season that could've been, until Coach let Butler wax Valpo's floor with us. Hell, we were beat within the first 6 minutes of that game. At least the party in the hotel afterwards was a good time. That's just conference play. His teams CONSISTENTLY shrink in big games. He's always been content getting blown out by Bo and the Badgers. The game at The Cell 2 years ago being the exception. Face it, the only notable non-conference wins of his career are his 2-0 record vs. Davidson, and the one blowout win at DePaul courtesy of Paris Gulley and Tony Meier going 10-10 from 3. If you want to watch Jeter's teams for 30 years and sit in The Cell like a statue, much like most of our dead-ass fanbase, that's your prerogative. I, on the other hand, would like to see my degree have some more notoriety than being from a run-of-the-mill, hyphenated state school.

I DO NOT sit in the Cell' like a statue. You have no idea where I sit. I was standing the other night when a lot of people around me were sitting. I cheer as loudly as anyone for the Panthers, whether I am at the Cell' or in a bar watching a game. However, I have a little knowledge of the basketball world beyond the small world of UWM. You want to go to the "Big Dance", Go. Do you have your tickets for the BC in March, I do. I was at the Staple Center last March watching the best of the Thursday Night sweet 16 games, OSU and AZ. I went to Duquesne in Pittsburgh. In 1982 they fired Mike Rice Sr. (Yes, the father of "that" Mike Rice), after a career 62-49 record. I Was at one of his last games, as a coach. In 30 years since that time they have had ONE coach with a career winning record (Ron Everhart) who was 10 games over .500; AND THEY FIRED HIM!! Is that WHAT you want approximately 30 years of coaches with losing records? Why, can't you and the other "Fire Jeter" crowd realize that the hiring of Bruce Pearl was a "freakish situation" that will probably never be repeated. He was (and is) a very talented coach but, because of the issues he had while an ass't at IA, and involving IL, was available. Also, Gary Waters, in a fair world, would never have been available for CSU. If Bruce wants to come back here, fine. Fire Jeter, and bring him back. What are the chances of him coming back here? SLIM & NONE! Let's wait until the season is over. If he has a record of 16-15 (which I predicted, and people said was too light) he will still have won twice as many games as last year, WHICH IS FINE WITH ME!!

After all, what's the point of having a Division 1 program if you can't go to the NCAA tournament once every Halley's Comet sighting? Just take down the damn scoreboards, revoke all the scholarships and issue participation ribbons!

G.o.D.
Revoke all of the scholarships? That's D-III, right? I have no problem with going to see D-III games. I used to see CUA play both football and basketball when I lived in the DC area, and it was FUN. If, you want to go "dancing" every year switch your allegiance to Marquette. (Well, maybe not this year.) I have seen more UWM games than I have seen Marquette games ever since UWM started playing at the Cell'. To paraphrase Paul Stewart in "The Champion" I just like to see a couple of good teams "get it on". Go Panthers!

Have fun at the games with whatever gaggle of faculty arrives to boast about how we're an "academic" school. As for allegiance, I like Butler, VCU, Creighton, Harvard, San Diego State, New Mexico State and Wichita State. Non-BCS programs that take pride in and and see the value of Division 1 college basketball.

Unlike yourself, the vast majority of us on this board care about the Panthers because this is OUR SCHOOL, not just because they want a local team to cheer for. We don't want to simply cheer for a team because they're usually dancing (see: Marquette), they want to see OUR TEAM go dancing! In the BIG DANCE, not D-III! Now, I understand that not everyone has this sort of singular fan allegiance to the Panthers that I and many others on this board have, but you also need to understand that not everyone cares for the reasons you do. And in case you haven't noticed, on a message board like this, it's something like 90-95% of fans that are going to be in the camp you're not in when it comes to reasons for being a fan. Please, try to understand that.

Wichita State had quite a following out at the Staples Center last March. Staples Center has about the best handicapped seats that I have encountered. Looked up WSU's history and discovered that Eddie Fogler coached there once. I would have seen him play collegiately at UNC in the 1969 Sweet 16, at Cole Field House. Rooting for Duquesne I bought a ticket which turned out to be in the UNC Student section, which made it interesting. That's the tournament that Charlie Scott won each game with a last second shot. Interesting sub plot there. When Charles Scott came out of HS UNC was still segregated in basketball. Lefty Driesell was then coaching Davidson, which was integrated. "Lefty" THOUGHT he had recruited Scott. But Smith persuaded UNC to integrate its basketball team, and Scott was the player who did it. So, who did Scott make the Basket against to go to the Final Four? Yes, Lefty and Davidson. If Davidson had won that would have given Lefty his only Final Four trip. True Story. What does this have to do with UWM? Absolutely nothing.
