Yay, a practice building... THAT'LL legitimize Milwaukee athletics in the community. Why not build a new arena with what we already have donated and use THAT for practice? Northern Iowa built a very nice facility for $30 Million... don't we already have 2/3rds of that? But it will be a big step to legitimize ourselves with recruits and that will help us win in the long run.

I still don't get why a practice facility is necessary... didn't we just spend a lot of money renovating the KC so that it has 5 different courts, not including the main arena floor?
I also don't see how a practice facility is going to help land recruits when ultimately, they'll have to play games in an facility that's not even as nice as what some high schools have.
I hate to say it, but the way things are going, we may as well drop down to D3 and join the WIAC.

From everything I have seen our practice situation might be the worst for a D1 program and is likely worse than a WIAC school. This program needs A LOT of improvements and I sense that Gieger sees a practice facility as the low hanging fruit.
We would be so much better off if we actually upgraded facilities in 1990 when we became a D1 team again. I know the money probably wasn't available but we have delayed finding a permanent home for far too long.

Get real, Tyler. The only reason this is even an issue is because it wasn't like this 15 years ago. Madison is exactly the same, but homeowners don't complain as loudly as these people are because they are used to it - it's "supposed" to happen at Madison, it's "not supposed" to happen at Milwaukee. This is what college is. Students are going to drink - students have always drank. The difference is they live in the neighborhood now, they don't all drive to their homes in St. Francis, Bay View, Cudahy, West Allis, New Berlin, and Wauwatosa. This is the price of being a residential campus. Do we want students to be more respectful? Yes. sh*tting on people's lawns and throwing empty beer bottles in the street is sad. You also need to educate those students. These crackdowns are just bullsh*t PR stunts - they aren't fixing the problem. Beer in the Klotsche Center isn't adding to the problem. Most of the students that would drink are 21+, and those students aren't the problem. The problem is students who are underage, have never drank before, and don't know how to hold their booze. I remember being underage and drinking way too much many times - hell, one time I threw up in the Klotsche Center arena at a women's basketball game - but experience taught me to drink responsibly. Do I still get drunk? Sure, but I don't get blackout drunk and I'm never too drunk to be coherent. These students need to be educated - they need to learn about the "euphoric state" of alcohol use that creates the good feeling, and they need to know where to cut off right after that. Hell, listen to Nic Kovac; he's not saying he doesn't want students to drink, he's saying he wants them to learn to be respectful and keep control of themselves. This needs to be a major part of orientation - extend the time of the event if you need to - and students need to know alcohol content, BAC and all that mess. My orientation they glanced over BAC for 5 minutes and then moved along. Having more places on campus, in a controlled environment, for students to drink is not the problem - instead it puts them in spotlights where many UWM police are, they can easily identify these drunk students and get them out of there.

I'm just saying how the general public sees us, Jimmy. Our public image right now is not really doing any good.
I know that most students here drink within reason, but it's the bad drunks that come out that gives the public the bad image of the university.

As someone whose been a bouncer on the East Side, there's not a whole lot of people who can sympathize with the homeowners better than I can, since I've had to deal with drunken pissants just as often as they do. But frankly, from having spoken with many of them, UWM could enforce BYU-levels of rules against student drinking and they still wouldn't be satisfied. They want the Upper East Side to be exactly as it was in 1975 and don't seem to understand how unrealistic that is not only with how the university has grown, but just for the simple fact that we're now in the 21st century.
In other words, it really isn't going to matter one way or the other whether or not beer is served at basketball games... just let the damn students drink!
