I thought you were primarily concerned with "competing" for a league title Fran, a term you have yet to define. But I wouldn't expect you to play in anything other than nuanced terminology that's nothing but subjective.

I notice that you carefully excised the rest of the definition: "especially a long-standing one regarded as outmoded or no longer important." Nope, nothing omitted on purpose. I will try to use shibboleth in the next few days!

We are competing. There's no nuance. We won the conference title last year, and were within a couple extremely winnable games of doing so again this year. If you expect that we will win the title every year, no coach will satisfy you, no matter the style. As in just about every conference, no Horizon school, not even Butler (as proved this year) has a headlock on the league. Rob has proved that with his recruits, playing a tough defensive style, he not only can contend, he will contend. So I find it a little remarkable (only a little, of course -- sports boards are a lot like sports radio) that after two years of doing that there's a subset of people trying to dust off their torches and pitchforks from three years ago.

At some point you actually have to win one of these tournaments. As others have pointed out, we didn't come all that close in last year's championship as Butler handled us with relative ease. Do you think it's undealistic to reach the NCAA's once every five years? That's hardly shooting for the moon in my talk radio-influenced position. No one thinks next year's outfit will fare much better than this year's. We'll be going on a 7-year dry spell, but I'm sure it's okay since Rob is one swell guy and runs a clean program.

I think that at a mid-major when you throw out a guy who's contending and replace him with the next big thing, you usually have just re-set your program to zero, and the chances that you will do better are very poor. The "next big thing" at our level is a questionable proposition.
This is all silly talk anyway. No athletic director in Rick's position would look at Rob's performance over the last two years and not be astonished that anyone would seriously suggest a change was in order. If Rob gets an offer he likes better and takes it we'll be looking for the next big thing. Otherwise, Rob will be our coach.

Remind me of Kowalczyk's conference championship years again.

Since fans on here make a big deal about 20 wins in a season, to put that in perspective, Kowalczyk is 1 game away from getting 20 at Toledo. All he needs is a win at home vs Robert Morris.

I, for one, would give this past season a B-.

Certainly, style of play is important in attracting interest and excitement from casual basketball fans in the Milwaukee community. Style of play is obliviously not the most important element, I’ve never said this nor have I ever read it on this board. But style of play is critical in terms of building fan interest, attracting quality athletes, and going back to our roots. Our best teams in the history of our program in the Division 1 era, from both Antrim and Pearl, played a fast paced, full-court style of play.

The most important component is this,
Jeter’s last 6 seasons as Head Coach at Milwaukee:
0 NCAA Tournament Berths 0 Conference Tournament Championships 0 Outright Conference Regular Season Championships 1 Shared Conference Regular Season Championships (Tie between Butler, Cleveland State, and Milwaukee)

What the AD will note is that the last two years have been the best of those six. Even putting aside the fact that there is no money available to buy Rob out, what kind of dumb would he be to jettison a guy who has the program on the uptick?
And who is the guaranteed savior he would replace him with? Tell me who the next Brad Stevens is. If you can, I'll negotiate a deal for him -- with Illinois.
Some of you guys are obviously dissatisfied with Rob. Tell me why you think the next coaching hire will turn out any better (looking at it from your point of view) than Rob. What's the secret formula that you know, but that ADs all over the country haven't mastered?

I notice that you carefully excised the rest of the definition: "especially a long-standing one regarded as outmoded or no longer important." Once again you present something as fact when it is your opinion. Style of play has a hell of a lot to do with bringing in crowds, not just winning or Brad Soderberg would still be the coach at UW.
