Panoske didn't play very well?
The coaches are admittedly leaning toward redshirting him, but I suspect could be swayed by Tony's injury absence.
Did you see what a dynamic force J.J. was under the basket blocking and altering shots. The kid's absolutely a legitimate 6-foot-10 (so is "Q") and 230 pounds. I see a great future here.
Right now, I'd say we're limited to a "11-man rotation" and that likely includes three freshman. Shaq and Evan are going to get considerable action, depending upon Lonnie's recovery.

I thought JJ Panoske looked very solid tonight. JJ has added muscle since I seen him at the pro-am this summer. He likes the three point shot, is that his game?

He likes the three point shot, is that his game? Offensively, yes. Maybe too much. Put it this way: he's not shy.

It's always great to see the kids run around, even in a scrimmage. It was very disappointing to hear of Tony's injury. The coaches are hopeful he'll make it back quicker than expected. His absence makes a big difference.
Some observations: First, the staff put together another terrific recruiting class. The two true freshmen have a very high ceiling. Shaq is quick on quick and not shy on the court. His defense and shot selection need enormous improvement, but that's to be expected of freshmen. As SK noted, he played a nice little two man game with big Mete at times. His overall understanding on the court has a long way to go but in short relief of Kaylon this year he'll do some good things, and he has a chance to be a terrific player as the years roll on.
Outside of the fact that his shooting was a little tight JJ Panoske had a really impressive game. I had him for 7 blocks. He's long, athletic and smart. The coaches think he has a chance to be a special player in the league some day and you could see why.
Demetrius Harris is a big, physical athlete. He didn't always finish his chances but I liked his instincts on offense and his presence on defense. The coaches tell me has made huge strides, and he still has a lot of upside.
Paris Gulley just struck me as solid. His shot is a little funky but looks effective. What I really liked about Paris tonight was that he didn't make many mistakes out there. He'll be a reliable player in the rotation.
As for the "vets," I was really impressed by the work Kyle has obviously put in to get bigger, stronger and more explosive. James Haarsma is pretty much as advertised. A little undersized but tough and active. Ja'Rob played a pretty fair game. We are so much better off when he can play the wing and not have primary ball responsibilities. Kaylon played well. He looks like a guy ready to run the team. There were a few bad throwaways, which were his biggest problem last year, but not many, and scrimmages are going to see more of that anyway. Evan Richard is so talented but has to think his way around the court a little better. That will come. He made two sweet turnaround jump shots that caught my attention because that's a shot that honestly used to be a staple of basketball in the 60s and 70s but seems to have disappeared. And there were a few times he looked like Tone Boyle out there by running really hard around the screens. I'm sure I've forgotten to mention a few guys.
All in all an enjoyable evening. There's no doubt this team will struggle some without Tony. You can't lose the best player on the team and not have it affect you. But there are a lot of pieces for the coaches to work with here, and when you watch the younger players you know the future is very bright.

Wow, out for at least 6 weeks.......... Shaq didn't disappoint. He's going to be the real deal. Evan looks like he has a very sweet shot. I wish they would have set some high screens for him, cause I would have liked to have seen a few uncontested 3's to see just how pure that shot is. I also thought KK looked like he could have a strong year. It was a fun event. I took the kids....and they loved the free soda, popcorn, and pizza...along with the action on the court. I enjoyed it all, including the free beer. I'm looking forward to the luncheon today!! Go Panthers!!

Haarsma reminded me a lot of that crafty guy you see at the YMCA who just dominates with skillful moves and non-stop hustle. I mean this as a compliment to James, I absolutely fell in love with his game last night.

Another thing about last night's scrimmage:
Demetrius Harris was more of an offensive player than I imagined. While he didn't finish all his opportunities, he did demonstrate a nice first step to the basket and a good baseline jumper.
He's undeniably toward the top end of the rotation, especially in light of Tony's injury.

Interesting night last night i would say. We didn't get to see the team that we may have thought we would have on the court with Tony out but that being said definitely interesting i thought. I saw lots of high energy guys, not sure if that was cuz there were other ppl then just coaches and administrators watching but lots of guys that seem to have a real high motor. Not sure if that is a good or bad thing to be real honest.
I think we all know what we have with the returning guys so this is just my thoughts on the new guys.
James looked like a beast, all i could think was how great it would have been to have had him last year against Matt Howard, oh man that would have been a battle! James is a guy that could be a double-double guy but he is also a guy that i think you might expect to have 4 fouls every game too.
Evan, that kid can flat out score. He looks like he just hovers when he rises up to shoot. reminds me a lot of Tone before his injury, could be even better then Tone I think.
Shaq, the last time we had a guy like this running the point was when one of those on the coaching staff was wearing a jersey. You can tell he is a freshman for sure, not sure he has a great handle on the team offense but man he raw ability is pretty impressive, and his defense could use a lil improvement as well.
JJ, the kid is gonna make ppl look stupid in a yr or 2, I think his upside is higher then Shaq's actually. Give him a yr to bulk up and learn the league and he will be an absolute beast and a half in the league. The Shaq to JJ combo is gonna be a lot of fun to watch for the next four years big time!
Demetrius, he plays bigger then he is i thought, Him and James in the front court man that's a lot of beef up front. It has been a long time since we have had this size up front i think, and that is going to be a lot for some teams in the league to handle i think, I think we finally have some guys in the front court that we can just keep bringing out and making ppl match up. And like some said already he might not have finished every time around the rim but he looked strong with the ball and that he had a plan and he was gonna go after it, he will be at the line a lot i think hope he doesn't have "Ryan Allen at the line" disease haha
Paris, goofy looking shoot at times but it went in. He is a guy that could quietly fill up the stat sheet, he plays well but plays kind of quiet if that makes sense. I am looking forward to seeing him play more.
I don't see any chance of there being anything short of all out effort from these guys, like I said before lots of high energy guys it seemed like but not sure if it is a good or bad thing but it sure looks like they are going to be a scrappy team and one that is going to play hard, i really really like that!

Good stuff, dutch. Plenty of spot-on observations. And no, we've never had this kind of size before. Entering the K, I thought I was walking into the Bucks' scrimmage. Oh, wait ... By the way, in answer to the J-S online blog, I don't care how many in-state kids you recruit as long as you get the right ones. With James, Kyle, Evan and J.J., it looks like we got it right.

Today's luncheon was first rate!! My son and I enjoyed ourselves. Ja'Robb and his parents, along with Coach MacKenzie sat at our table. Rick Costello came up to my son and I and chatted with us for a few minutes when we first sat down. The meal was great, and I already have Panther magnets on both my cars. Go Panthers Go!!

Where did you hear that Meier is out 6 weeks? From another post...I think on page 2. At today's luncheon, there was speculation he could be back sooner than later......
