Our rival to the north is also a bird... albeit a mythological one.

I also like that much better than our current logo and nickname.
Very cool promotion by the AD.

Me three... Gulls > Panthers
PLEASE let this be the AD testing the waters for a full-on rebrand!

This is not testing the waters. This was the team doing something cool on their own. I think it's excellent.

Well it's pretty cool either way. Hopefully someone takes note of how well this is being received by the fans.

Gotta have the fans respond! Make sure you go to the game, and head to the Black and Gold Club tailgate beforehand.

Best thing about the Gulls logo... it looks even better in our current colors.

Honestly I completely hate the Gulls, regardless of they're green or not. No I'm not real attached to Panthers as its probably the 3rd least original name outside of Wildcats and some variation of an eagle. Yes I realize there's a connection between the school and Gulls but who cares? Just because its from our past doesn't mean it shouldn't stay there. I could also REALLY care less being the only D1 school with Gulls as the nickname. One could make just as much of an argument that we should go back to our original nickname the "Normals". Besides when I think of Gulls I think of seagulls and I don't really feel like seeing live versions of my mascot hanging around a Walmart parking lot.

Also the nickname is a secondary problem when it comes to branding. The primary problem is the plethora of names for the school itself and the athletic dept is doing nothing to help solve it. See the link below for an example. www.uwmpanthers.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/051313aaa.htmlThe website is www.uwmpanthers.com. The banner along the top of the page says "Official Site of the Milwaukee Panthers". In three of the bulletins in the article we're referred to as "The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee", "UWM" & "Milwaukee". WHY THE HELL IS THIS ALLOWED?! I believe SRT4Driver once compiled a list of all the names we have been referred to in the media and it was about 20 too many. THIS is where we need to come together on a decision for our name first and foremost. The Badgers are either Wisconsin or UW, the Golden Eagles are either Marquette or MU, the Phoenix are either Green Bay or UWGB and we're either Milwaukee, UWM, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee or UW-Milwaukee. Unacceptable, unnecessary & incredibly stupid.

Honestly I completely hate the Gulls, regardless of they're green or not. No I'm not real attached to Panthers as its probably the 3rd least original name outside of Wildcats and some variation of an eagle. Yes I realize there's a connection between the school and Gulls but who cares? A good number of people at this forum and otherwise spend their free time following Milwaukee athletics care enough to advocate for the name change. That's "who cares." Just because its from our past doesn't mean it shouldn't stay there. ...and just because our nickname is Panthers now doesn't mean it should remain as such for perpetuity. Until you can come up with a better reason for Gulls to remain in the past besides "I just don't like it," you really don't have much of an argument. Personally, I'd prefer to honor people like Herman Kluge, who if not for their hard work and dedication, we might not even have an athletic program to follow today... a reality at more urban campuses than you probably even realize. I could also REALLY care less being the only D1 school with Gulls as the nickname. That's nice, but recruits do care about stuff like this... to where coaches openly admit as such.

This rebranding is about 3 things. 1. Recruiting 2. Recruiting 3. Recruiting.Talking to you Class of 2014! #GoBeavs
— Mike Riley (@coach_Riley) March 5, 2013
One could make just as much of an argument that we should go back to our original nickname the "Normals Normals was never an official nickname for Milwaukee. It was just a generic way for reporters to reference teams from normal schools, the way "Peds" was for teaching colleges and "Aggies" was for agricultural schools. Eau Claire, Whitewater, etc. were called the Normals as well, and our teams were referred to as the "Milwaukeeans" just as often as they were called the Normals. I don't really feel like seeing live versions of my mascot hanging around a Walmart parking lot. This... and I say this without the least bit of hyperbole... is probably the weakest argument put forth for anything since I've been posting in this forum. As if Walmart (and not, say, beaches and waterfronts) were what people thought of when they think of seagulls. "Milwaukee Gulls" would make people think of Lake Michigan and Bradford Beach... things that are pretty important to our university. The bottom line is, there's a lot of "pros" towards adopting Gulls as our identity while the only "pro" towards keeping Panthers is that it wouldn't cost us any money immediately... but even then we're way past due for an identity refresh as it is.

Unacceptable, unnecessary & incredibly stupid. Valid points, but if we had a unique nickname like Gulls... and not one that's shared with two pro teams, a bunch of other colleges, and at least a half-dozen high schools in Wisconsin alone... we could push that half of the brand while we figure out what to do about the other half; and more importantly, we'd at least have something easy and concise to call the team in the meantime. If you tell someone you're going to watch the Panthers game, they're just as likely to think you're talking about an NFL game involving a team from the Carolinas.
