I disagree that we don't need the Badgers. There are very few, if any serious majors that would "volunteer" to come into the Cell to play us. Getting the Badgers to do so once a decade or whatever is better than we'll get from most other majors.
WI has built a tremendous basketball program and the opportunity to play them at Mad-town or here is huge for us. How many other majors have we played? Memphis as part of the pre-season NIT and Kansas. NC St at NC State, Purdue at Purdue. Have any of those teams said they'll come and play us at home? No.
Say all you want about beating or playing majors not having an effect on getting an at-large bid, but the truth is those games help. They help prepare us for big-time games, truly hostile environments. They help us with seeding when we do get into the big dance, and they'll probably help us regarding the NIT if we don't happen to make the dance.
Playing majors at any level, and getting those majors to come to your house is big. Even if it's once every five or six years.

Hello? The Badgers are not volunteering to come play us at the Cell. What part of a 5-1 deal don't you understand? It keeps getting modified so they dont have to play here.
Indiana, Iowa, Pennsylvania...those states have great relationships between schools. Either tournaments on a rotating court, or home-home series. Therefore, teams like Indiana State and Northern Iowa have the opportunity to win. UIC even gets home-home deals, we can too. Until Madison changes the deal to a 2-1, they are killing our state image and basically getting an annual free win.
We dont even get much money to play at Madison. They pay us off cheap, dont play at the Cell, and benefit from a win with our RPI. The vast majority of major teams we have visited, paid us far better than our poor situation with Madison.
Again, Bo is no friend of state basketball. Its time for many to take off their red and white glasses. Playing a good "major" is no bigger than playing Northern Iowa, Creighton, Bucknell, Wichita State, Indiana State, Missouri State, Tenn Tech, Oral Roberts, Old Dominion, Winthrop, Pacific, Hawaii, Nevada, Western Kentucky, etc etc etc.
We dont need the Badgers, we dont need Marquette. We forge our own identity.

This is correct. Home-and-homes with quality mid-majors would be markedly more beneficial. After thorough research, there is no arrangement that mirrors the one UW-Madison has with a quality program from the same state.

Wait, that's not what I have been told. You must be kidding, Bo Ryan only wants what is best for our program. Obviously we cant take care of ourselves yet. We need to play the Badgers in a horrid arrangement; it is our only way to success. We must live through them.
Whatever Bo Ryan states, we obviously need to follow. Why would he possibily want to put us in a bad situation?
(heavy sarcasm).

I understand very well what a 5-1 deal is. Maybe someone needs to have the stones to stand up to what the paper that was originally signed initially said instead of constantly allowing it to change. Regardless, that doesn't answer the question of whether we need the WI game or not.
My point is just that I belive it's much more beneficial to play a major team, even if we're getting screwed on the deal so that they rarely ever have to play at our place than it is a mid-major where we have home and aways.
Winning against a mid-major whose success may fluctuate from year-to-year does very little for us IMO. Does it prepare us for playing in a truly intimidating environment, in front of huge crowds, etc? Typically not, if it does at all. Does it prepare us for playing the type of teams we'll likely see in the first round of the tourney if we make it? No--the odds of us playing another mid-major in the tourney are extremely slim. The only thing playing a mid-major with an scheduling does is give us a better chance to win a game against them because they're probably not going to be as good as a WI, and they're going to actually give us a home game.
Truth is, you get a nice little RPI bump even for losing to a quality opponent on the road. Truth is, your SOS improves exponentially by playing a major team due to the teams that team plays. And those are the things that will be looked at for automatic bids, (I don't think that without the KS game last year, we're higher than a 13, and maybe even a 14--Hawaii game did very little for us as did Manhattan last year) for seeding purposes, for entries to the NIT and whether we may or may not get a home game in the NIT.
I'm not saying we're not getting hosed on the deal, just saying to all those naysayers who say we don't need the WI game, I belive we do. Hell, if we can get Marquette to play us home and aways, do away w/ the WI game. Then I would agree we don't need it nearly as much. (even though playing at the Kohl center is a good learning experience for the players IMO) But without the consistent games against major conference teams, we'll struggle a bit more just to get decent seeds and invites to post-season tourneys.

Well said... The Badgers WILL play at the cell and I'll be sitting in 324, 6, 1 and 2 watching them loose to my alma matter. I disagree that we don't need the Badgers. Another thing to consider, too, is that even though we generally lose to the Badgers at the Kohl Center, the game is still an eye-opener for the players, and is, if nothing else, very good practice for the conference schedule.
Playing at UW makes playing at any HL school a little easier.
