I suspect Winthrop will be ranked quite highly in the Mid Major top 25 that comes out on November 28th, perhaps even above a good UWM Panthers squad. Marquette defeated Oral Roberts last night, another top 10 Mid-major. It is just not in Marquette's best interests to play UWM. Where Winthrop's league is in comparison to the Horizon League is of no value. The Horizon League is a better league than Winthrop's, so is the Big East better than the Pac Ten. Does that mean Rutgers is better than UCLA because of the conference they are in? As for Winthrop, Wisconsin massacred the team picked to finish second in its conference. Oral Roberts is probably not going to be a top 10 anything outside of its conference Marquette's RPI would be better losing to UWM than it is beating some of the bunnies, (like Lewis, Delaware State, Valpo), on it's schedule. True College fans know that half of the RPI is the strenght of schedule played by your opponent and their won loss record. They also know that teams and fans get fired up for rivalries. Now I know that MU and Lewis have this great running rivalry but somehow I think an MU-UWM game will sell out and the Lewis v MU game won't. But hey you guys can just announce another crowd of 14,000 when only 8,000 are really there and call it day.

People just keep missing the point on why MU wont play us. They are not scared and they know it would be a sell out. They also know playing us (this year atleast) would help their RPI more than almost any other non-conference game they will play. Its a simple cost benefit situation. The cost is they have much more to lose in recruiting then if they do not play us. If they lose to us the only thing they have different than us is they are a smaller private school. Madison does not have this problem since they are in a different city. While the only benefit is they can say we told you so if they beat us. I know MU and us use to play, but the difference was we were no threat then and now we are. I dont expect to see us play any time soon since now the problems seem to run much deeper than they did 4 years ago.

lets get this back on track....predictions for tomorrows game? I have this feeling we find a way to pull this one out. Probably falling behind early by 10 points and battling back to evenif not a small lead at half. Come out hot in the second half and build a 10+ point lead with Tenn Tech mounting a strong come back with us holding out for a 3 point win. Final score 72 -69. Tucker has a big game, Smith gets even better, Tigret puts up another double double, Massiah sees double figures in scoring and Boo has a quiet game but hits some key shots.
Anyone else?

Give it a rest, everyone.
Recruiting? Are you freakin serious? You think if UWM beat Marquette then all of a sudden recruits would rather play in the Horizon League instead of the Big East?
If you believe this, I happened to have recently purchased some nice real estate that you might be interested in. Actually, they are bridges ... and they come dirt cheap.

True college fans also know that UWM/MU isn't a rivalry

UWM would need to win a game against them first before MU can even be considered a rival.

Let's get the focus of this thread back to tonight's game.
I'll admit, I'm very nervous about this one. Tenn Tech's a pretty good team and very dangerous at home. We'll need to shoot well (above 42% FGs) and turn the ball over less than 15 times to win.

a win tonight would be as impressive as winning at Manhattan last year. TTU has a gaudy home record.
seems like this team shoots well. if we can defend the perimeter we should be in a position to win. i agree 97, shooting well on our part will be key.
we're going to learn a lot about this year's team tonight. a win will go a long way towards building confidence and building a head of steam as we head into some of the sexier non-conference games.

This is going to be a very tough game. I'm not at all pessimistic about our team, but when you realistically look at Tennessee Tech's stats they look pretty good. As a team they have a .508 FG% and are shooting .451 from 3pt. They have a +2.3 rebounding margin even after playing a good Dayton team and Oregon State, and average 10.7 steals a game. Forcing them to commit turnovers with the press will be key as they average 19 TOs a game. I'm not sure the atmosphere will be too imposing as they only average just over 2000 people a game so far this year(though UWM might draw more).
It looks like we really need to stop Derick Stribling (Played at Tennessee for 2 seasons) and Belton Rivers (good 3pt shooter originally from East Carolina). Stribling is averaging 16.3 pts, 5 rebounds a game while shooting .645% from the field. Rivers is averaging 13.7 pts per game while shooting a great .526 (10/19) from 3pt while coming off their bench.
This would be a great win for the team, as Tennessee Tech looks like it has what it takes to win the OVC and get an auto-bid to the tournament.

Brilliant argument. So if the second place team in the WCC is masacred by Boise State, then that must mean Boise State is better than Gonzaga based on that logic. Who cares what the second best team in that conference did, we are talking about Winthrop. Just as the second place team in the WCC doesn't matter when it's Gonzaga that matters Actually they were just ranked 11th in today's Mid Major poll, so they have a good shot. Winthrop was ranked 6th. Here is the poll www.collegeinsider.com/mmpoll/Doesn't a rivalry require both teams to compete against one another, usually win more than their fair share? I really do not think you want to compare attendance numbers, an argument much like your others that will cause you to flameout. Beat SLU, nothing like giving chrome dome a good beating.
