Before drinking the kool-aid, remember how much we pressed Illinois? You can't successfully press a team that can handle the ball as well as a Memphis and Illinois team. This is Jeter's first real game. Give him a chance. The players will adjust and fit into his offensive scheme. And don't be surprised to see the press and an up-tempo game used against teams it will be successful for!As far as substitutions...Rob's still trying to make his point to the players. When they realize they can't make mistakes and expect to stay in the game, they'll stop. Beating a D II team by 20 and a D III team by 15 wasn't necessarily a good omen for starting out w/ a top 15 DI team at their place. I am very certain however that by the time the Horizon conference schedule begins, this team will know a lot more about itself and be much more consistent. BTW, there's an old saying about patience being a virtue...there appear to be a lot of virtueless people around here. At least the bandwagon will now have a place for me to sit. T

And by the way, a quote from Calipari... "Obviously, it is not going to be this easy all the time," Memphis coach John Calipari said. "We gave up 23 points to Joah Tucker, and he can really play. I just want you to know this team (Wisconsin-Milwaukee) that you saw, by the end of the season, is going to have 24 or 25 wins." At least someone outside the state has some respect for us. T

Holy cow. Some of us are in real need of some prefessional help.
Going into the game, I gave us about 25% shot at an upset win, if we played a perfect game. We had to get some big shots to fall, turn them over often, rebound effectively, shoot very well and have them have an off night from the outside. That was the formula in the dance last season. This wasn't a neutral site game after a full season of practice and games.
None of those things happened, and they were still within 8 with 14 minutes left.
This was the home opener for a Final Four dark horse. If you expected an upset, you need to rethink your expectations for this team.
There are about 300 other programs in the country that would have lost last night, so I'm not surprised.
Memphis is a legit top 10 team. Lets just see what they do against Bama before we judge this loss.
Jeter did what he could with the game. Foul trouble changed a lot of the rotation, I'm sure. Tigert was off, and in foul trouble. hill had to sit for a long time in the first half for the same reason. Davis was not hitting, and lost confidence.
On the up side, Tucker played like the top 10 player in the country many (including me) think he is. He was a one man show for most of the game, and still was able to score. Smith proved that he belonged at this level, and is ready to play now. His shot will improve, and he can take almost anyone off the bounce.
The team defense was for the most part superb against a far quicker and bigger team. We rotated well, and didn't give up tons of penetration off the bounce.
That said, Jeter needs to put Ford in front of a Juggs gun for about 4 hours straigt for the next week, minimum. If he can get a handle, he could be a legit post scorer and top rebounder.
Messiah needs to get more aggressive on offense. He can take most guys his size off the bounce and create in the lane, and he needs to feel free to take 3's when he has open looks.
I love McCoy's attitude and drive, but if he ever puts up another 3, he should be sent to Siberia.
I don't know what to make of Young. He seems bored and unmotivated. Someone needs to light a fire under him. Does anyone know if there are off the court things going on with him? Homesick, perhaps?

It was the first game...and if your jumping on the KillJeter bandwagon you need to go. He will lead us on, he will be a good coach. Memphis is a better and bigger team.
To that point, I saw a post here yesterday that said, its not about upseting Top 25's in Novemeber its about upsetting them in March!
So keep that in Mind!

I don't like the way this game turned out anymore than the rest of you, but lets keep things in perspective. UWM was a somewhat heavy underdog in this game - and that proved true.
The long and short of it is this, we lost badly to a DARN good team, on the road, in the first game of the year, with a new coach/system in the preseason NIT (which were were invited to play in). Things could be a lot worse!

Just remember, If Memphis had a good coach they would have won by at least 50 points.

Just remember, If Memphis had a good coach they would have won by at least 50 points. this could very well be true, and why with a 20+ point lead was he still pressing us and with only about 3 or 5 minutes to go, this is what may have pissed me off more than the sh*tty shooting that we had last night.....

Boy, I picked a bad day to be busy at work... Anyway, most of my thoughts have already been expressed quite well by others, so I will simply say this: It does not matter how well we play in November and December. It matters how well we play in February and March. There is a transition occurring here, despite what some may tell you, or some may believe. This team is better than it looked last night, but it will take time. Please be patient. Any criticism of Rob Jeter is so ridiculous at this point, I won't waste my time with a response.

With this schedule, the Panthers should win 20 or more games. No excuse not to in this league.

Not sure how many of you watched it, but Memphis beat Alabama (#14) 87-76 last night. I watched most of the game, and it wasn't even that close. The game was at Alabama, and Memphis just flat out dominated. I think the only time Alabama was within 10 points was when they closed within 9 with 3 minutes to play. Memphis was up 14-17 points for most of the game.
They are good, real good.
As a side note, do you think they are calling for Bobby Knight's head at Texas Tech? I mean he lost 81-46 on a neutral court !

Simply put, they are some great athletes on that squad!

Memphis was real impressive last night. Barring injury, they look like and Elite 8, possible Final Four team. They did the same things to Bama as they did to us, on Bama's home court. If not for Bama's late "comeback," margin of victory could've ben 25-30.
As for Texas Tech, I wouldn't exactly call the Garden a "neutral court" for Syaracuse. 'Cuse playing there is pretty much the same as us playing Kansas at Kemper Arena (Kansas City, MO) as opposed to Allen Fieldhouse (on KU's campus). Not their true "home court" but a definite home court advantage.
