Sorry, I think my previous post may have been misunderstood....I do not think Bruce was wrong....I think it's wrong for UWM fans to bash Jimmy because he took a chance on criminal A but then say it's all OK that Bruce took a chance on criminal B. You said yourself that if you had known, you'd be shaky on the recruitment of Ed....so there is some question regarding Bruce's morality.
Look, I agree with you as far as the way things turned out. Ed behaved, graduated, and became a great player in this league. McGee, will he be back? Possibly, but as of right now, it looks like he's messed up again. However, I'm sure Jimmy wasn't thinking when he took the chance that McGee would quit the team mid-season.
The problem I have is simply that the same fans that bash Jimmy are not holding Pearl accountable for his recruitment. Just stop looking at what happened after the recruitment for a second (i.e., how the situations turned out)....and now ask yourself is one is totally right and the other totally wrong....

your problem getting us to say it was wrong is that you are too late. I would of been shakey. Had i been a UIC fan i would of started a cheer for it. the debate lies in, can these risks become something postive. Since time has already shown that Ed did a good job of keeping his head up. This means no UWM fan will say it was wrong for Bruce to recruit ed.
Getting a recruit with a history will bring on critism. The difference between Jimmy and Ed is that a rapist becomes visiable faster than someone who got drunk and beat some people up. In this case, the rapist came first which means critism came first. Your critism of recruiting ed came too late. We can clearly see Ed deserved his second chance. and we can see that mcgee receaived his second chance and blew it. Thus UWM fans will say that Bruce is not in the same boat as Jimmy when picking recruits.

Well, I appreciate the discussion dunzz.....I guess I can be partly satisfied with knowing some UWM fans are either OK with McGee getting a second chance, or may have been shaky at the time of Ed's recruitment had they been aware of the situation.
To use the ol cliche, hindsight is always 20/20....sure Ed turned out well and so it looks like his recruitment was a risk-free move by Pearl. But this does not change the fact that he recruited a criminal. That's why I've been saying try to forget about what happened subsequent to the recruitment. I think if you do that, you'll realize that the situation is pretty similar (even though the outcomes so far are greatly different). I therefore think that Jimmy bashing cannot occur without taking a look at your own program first. All it is is two coaches wanting to give kids who made mistakes a second chance.
That's all I can say....at least you argued calmly with valid points....we're just not going to agree.
