"Hottest rumor going around recently: Overbay to Boston for Matt Clement."
If EPSN is right about one thing, I hope this is it

holy crap that would be sweet. As much as I love Overbay, we really need another quality starting pitcher.

I'm sure the money isn't close and Melvin accepting all of that contract is hard to fathom. Jenkins would have to be involved I would assume. Soon after that rumor ESPN notes that a GM claimed that Clement wasn't a Melvin type of player.
I'd rather have the Blue Jays stud prospect as was rumored previously.
The amount of teams with 1st base holes is dwindling and I am seriously doubting that Overbay is going anywhere. Its a shame. Given that free agents hurt draft position so much (see Damien Miller last year), trades and farm systems are the only ways to go.
A dream trade that my roommate and I were discussing was Lyle and Geoff for DLowe. The Dodgers would move Kent to third and have Jenkins to replace Bradley since they're rumored to be moving him for Zito. Zito would of course take Lowe's spot. And Lowe then becomes our #2 with Hart taking over in right. Hey a guy can dream can't he?
Also on my wishlist is a signing of Nomar to play 3rd for a year or 2. I think he could be signed at a discounted rate like the Cubs did. If he succeeds, Bill Hall gets traded mid-season as a valuable middle-infielder.

Money's not an issue, sportsline.com reports that attanasio is set to go above his previously set 50 mil. "if the player is right" From my own personal thoughts, i think overbay has a better market value than some other firstbasemen out there sipmly off the age factor. In terms of MLB he's still considered a younger, raw talent. Guys like Thome and Olerud aren't gettin any younger, yet still demand the tall contracts. I have faith that the Brewers front office will recognize the fact that if not this year, then the next it's playoff time. So why not move Overbay this year, let Prince take his lumps next year, and be ready for a serious run on 07'.
Bill Hall will serve fine at 3b until Braun is ready, then hopefully he will himself have a higher value (keep in mind Hall is only 25 years old)
Look for the Brewers to hold on to Ohka, as he is a reliable 5th starter (Career ERA slightly under 4) So another top starter is definately in the works, you can always find bullpen help especially with Mike Maddux coaching.
All in all sorry this is a long brewers post, they have been a passion of mine since i could first talk. Keep in mind Doug Melvin has been known to move a superstar (A-rod for 252 mil) I hope a big deal headlines the papers within the next few days at the winter meetings
If any of you are feeling ambitious, I have talked with Daron Sutton at uwm games about the crew for long extended convos, he loves it. I'd go pick his brain.
GO PANTHERS GO BREWERS

Dan Kolb is likely to return to the Brewers to aid the bullpen. Atlanta probably won't make him an offer by the Dec. 20 deadline, making Kolb a free agent to sign with any club.
He still has a home in Union Grove.

who would be the closer then...Kolb or Turnbow

Turnbow.
Kolb would be either middle relief or setup, but could be a nice backup plan in case Turnbow struggled or got injured. Kolb produced his best results under Maddux.

Man that Kolb trade was awesome for Milwaukee. Kolb really sucked after he left. If Kolb did come back, I'm sure Maddux can fix his 'stuff'.

From ESPN Insider's Rumors: Blue Jays, Brewers talkin' swap Dec 7 - Milwaukee and Toronto are discussing a deal that would send first baseman Lyle Overbay to the Blue Jays for infielder Shea Hillenbrand and pitcher David Bush, a source told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick. Overbay hit .276 with 19 homers last year in Milwaukee. By moving Overbay, the Brewers would free up first base for top prospect Prince Fielder. Hillenbrand would be a defensive liability at first base, but he's a .288 career hitter. He hit 18 homers and drove in 82 runs for the Blue Jays last season.
My thoughts on this are ICK!
Possible Teams listed: Angels? Red Sox? Orioles? Blue Jays? Pirates? Red Sox?

Pirates are out of the mix for Overbay. They just traded Dave Williams for Sean Casey.

Overbay only hit .279 last year with limited power for a corner infielder, so thinking we are going to get a monster deal from a team for him is not likely. He isn't Sexson. Hillenbrand actually wouldn't be that bad. I believe he was an All Star last year with Toronto and in years past with the Red Sox. He came up as a 3rd baseman and now plays 1st, which will allow us to move Hall all over the field. This will increase our depth and allow for our stud Prince to start producing.

My roommate pointed out that Hillenbrandt is basically an Overbay who can play third. Backing up both spots or playing 3rd everyday makes him a huge upgrade over Wes the Mess. Getting Bush, who has struggled but is only 26 is a good move. I'd prefer Chacin, Towers, or a younger prospect from them given their depth of pitching in AAA but Bush will do. I'm not a big fan of Shea but the fact that one of my most hated Brewers would be leaving town in Pyle Overbay, I will accept it. (Yeah, I'm sure I'm the only one on here who hates him but thats where I stand)
I'm not considering Overbay to be "great" trade bait by any means but the facts that he has a great contract and is relatively young has caused many teams to propose offers that are a bit more salivating than this one. Today's JS has a good article on the situation. Go figure.
This is from today's paper in Toronto called SLAM -The Milwaukee Brewers and Jays met yesterday and will meet again today. The Jays want first baseman Lyle Overbay. A number of pitching possibilities were discussed. The Brewers could take reliever Miguel Batista to pass on to another team, as well as right-hander David Bush, or lefty David Purcey.
From what I've read in other places, Batista is on his way to ATL for Estrada, but the Brewers could trump them or pass him on to ATL since the Jays have Zaun and another guy. Batista would be a good setup guy for DTB.

I wouldn't mind turning it into a 3 way deal and getting Estrada. Maybe we can return Wes Helms where he belongs, right back in ATL.
