Darner is a mediocre coach people. Get over it. Since when is 385 career wins and a National Championship mediocre? You know who's mediocre? Bruce Weber. It seems that everyone on this board cares more about where he went to college than he does. I've NEVER heard him mention it, EVEN WHEN WE WERE PLAYING HIS TEAM IN THE SWEET FREAKING 16! So, forgive me if I don't give a damn about Bruce Weber. Bruce Weber doesn't give a damn about UWM. Prove me wrong. I love your passion, but please don't equate pride of one's alma matter to talent as a coach. When has pride in one's alma matter been a requirement for a head coaching job? He graduated in the 70's! The school wasn't even a D-I basketball school at that point! How much has changed since then? Mediocre? 1 NCAA finals appearance 2 MVC regular season titles when the MVC was good 2 Big Ten regular season titles 1 Big Ten tournament title 2 Big Twelve regular season titles FIBA Under-19 World Cup He won seemingly every coaching award possible in 05. He's also won: MVC Coach of the Year Big Ten Coach of the Year Big Twelve Coach of the Year He's a lot better than mediocre and could likely coach circles around most, if not all coaches currently in the Horizon.

And reason never mentioned is because thought he would be way beyond our reach salary wise. Was coaching at High D 1 stops and until recently very successfuly so why would we ever have identified him. Thought of him here and there again it would be lilke saying yeah, lets go get Bill Self or Jim freakin Boeheim

If Weber wants to come and you cant get one of the top tier d2 guys, hes the hire, dude can actually sell that he put guys in the league and ya know he did coach a team to the national title game. Atleast hes an actual head coach.

Weber would be pretty far down my list. Seems like a nice guy. His last few teams have not been good. Our team last year went to their building and lost by 1. Almost won. I would argue PBS out coached him that game.
Having recent success is more important to me than name recognition. Sure, hire him as AD. Couldn’t be any worse.

I'm not the one touting the "UWM Guy comes home to save the program" storyline, others are. I'm throwing water on it, because Weber has never once touted himself as a "UWM guy." The bottom line is, like Steve said, you aren't getting a guy who's last paycheck was $2.5 millon to come fight over practice time with the intramural frisbee team for $350K/yr. It ain't happening.

FYI, the D-2 national championship game will be played on March 26. NW Missouri State is a 3 seed, so it's entirely possible they're out before then. I'll be watching every opportunity I get.

Bruce Weber makes the most sense. He comes back to his alma mater, is from Milwaukee originally, and can give instant credibility to the program. If Bruce is hired, talk about something falling into your lap....The recruiting firm hired by the AD will make "easy money" with this engagement. I hate the idea that the university spent money on this. The members of this message board could have done just as good or a better job than some expensive "PaRkEr SeArCh FiRm." Bruce Weber does not make the most sense. Bruce Weber would be great, but McCollum is young and hungry. I would worry about a lot of people thinking If McCollum is 'ungettable' or turns us down, then yeah, I'd go for Weber. I just think he's a clear second to McCollum.

...I also think it would engender much good will and not sure this is possible but diminish much of the rancor towards AB. I think a lot of people would love her for doing this Is AB smart enough to realize that pleasing others could do her good? I've not seen much evidence of that so far....

I would like Linc as coach, but would be fine with McCollum as well. I think Bruce Weber is on the way down in his coaching career, so I think I would prefer someone that is more up and coming.

While I wouldn't mind Bruce Weber, as Jimmy mentioned, hiring a 40-year-old coach who has been an elite D-2 coach and is hungry to eventually be a high-major D-1 coach is the best route. We should want to be a stepping stone - that means we are winning games. We just need to hope to hold onto a coach for three or four years and then they take the next step in their career.

One of the things I like about McCollom is how long he stuck around his job. After winning multiple championships, I’m sure he had options. He might want to build something at Milwaukee and accomplish some things before moving on.

So, forgive me if I don't give a damn about Bruce Weber. Bruce Weber doesn't give a damn about UWM. Weber would absolutely bring name recognition and strong in-state ties that would help with recruiting. But yeah, in terms of being a “UWM guy”, that claim is absolutely laughable. He is one of the tens of thousands of other alumni who have proven they don’t give a sh*t about their alma mater. In 24 years of coaching, he willingly played UWM once.

Other schools don't care. Our attendance has been pisspoor for years because a lot of fans didn't go out of anger. Ben McCollum could come to Milwaukee and the job would not be done, people.
