The team's shooting last night was otherworldly. You know how in the pros they talk about "50/40/90" guys, and how few ever reach those incredible shooting stats? Our guys shot 54/41/100 as a team, and that was on a lot of shots and free throws taken. It extends what was an exceptional shooting performance against IUPUI, but in all honesty the Jags couldn't compete this year in the WIAC. Doing it against Oakland is very different, although I had to admit I was scratching my head about why Kampe persistently stuck with a zone that we were ripping to shreds. He effectively only played six guys. Maybe he was short on players and felt he couldn't go man.
Now the question is whether the switch has been thrown and we will continue to shoot well or whether we will revert to the mean. Overall for the season we are still a mediocre to poor shooting team even including the last two games, so it's very much an open question. One thing we must do better is protect the ball. It's hard to imagine how last night was only a ten point victory even with the exceptional shooting until you look at turnovers: 10 by Oakland, 17 by the Panthers. Do that in a game where the shots aren't falling as often and you will lose almost every time -- as we have seen over and over this year.
One other consequence of last night's win is that OU fell out of the top 100 ranks, leaving no HL teams at that level. In fact, per kenpom, the league is now at its all time historic low ranking both in efficiency and as compared to the other leagues.
I'm not kidding when I say that this team still has a realistic chance at a winning season. The competition really is that bad. Bluntly, if you can't win against this schedule, you never will.
