Desperation - throw it up against the wall and see what sticks Yes, the Spaghetti Principle. Remember when we used to recruit good players that fit a system?

Indeed. That was a strength with RJ and have to give credit where its due. Issue there was what was accomplished or not accomplished . Also pretty spotty at beginning with the likes of K Johnson, T Johnson, Leneal Harris, T Flowers and then later on with the two Bogas, McCallum and others....not consistent IMO but at least there seemed to be a plan and a philosophy especially in the mid years of his reign

I'm not defending Baldwin, but he did recruit Lucas, JT, Gholston, Newby, Roy, Tafari Simms.
The transfer portal wasnt nearly a thing during the prior coaching staff and that staff had mass exoduses (Exodi?) as well.

Do we even know the staff pursued him again? It can't be a swing and miss if they didn't even swing. That’s a great point. Last I saw only Troy, Towson, SIUE and UIC had reached out. That was 1 day after he entered the portal. Maybe we had no interest? I know Dree wanted him to come here, but dude averaged like 2 points a game last season. Not many minutes. I’m doubting we pursued him.

Are you referring to the year that several players were kicked off the team?

Kevin Johnson, Tim Flowers, Charlie Swiggett, Ryan Thornton, Roman Gentry, Deonte Roberts, Kaylon Anderson just to name a few. Then you can add the Bogas and Ja'rob McCallum.

Including Donald Thomas, Jr.; Trenton Marshall; Leneal Harris; Calvin Godfrey; and Leek Leek, none of whom ever played a game here, I count 23 scholarship players that left the program before their eligibility expired in 11 years under Jeter. Hardly a "mass exodus" and certainly no comparison to what we've experienced over the last five years.

The transfer portal is so much different now than then. Also, we've had 3 coaches in 5 years, obviously there will be more roster turnover.
Read some of the old threads during that time, people were saying the same thing then that they are saying about Baldwin now.

The transfer portal and coaching changes are undeniably two factors for the departures. There are others.

I'm not privy to the others so I can only comment on what I see. I see a lot of players who have left this program for various reasons under various coaching staffs.

Another one Dre is targeting for us?? Tariq Silver (Oregon State) who played with him at Tallahassee. He was on Baldwin’s radar before. Could be a Tallahassee reunion with Gholston, Tariq Silver and Rifen Miguel. Committed to Austin Peay. Swing and a miss.

Kevin Johnson, Tim Flowers, Charlie Swiggett, Ryan Thornton, Roman Gentry, Deonte Roberts, Kaylon Anderson just to name a few. Then you can add the Bogas and Ja'rob McCallum. Coach Jeter was the first to admit he was still trying to figure things out in the early years. I expect that's the same for most coaches with their first head coaching gig. It's also worth noting that there were a wide number of reasons for all those guys to leave the program. Roman Gentry left to be a father. We still consider him one of us. Ryan Thornton was just way too slow on his feet to really be dangerous in D-I, and he didn't take the strength and conditioning seriously or else he could have become an absolute monster as an upperclassman (his shot remains one of the fastest I've ever seen and it was accurate when he was on the floor for more than 10 seconds at a time), either here or at Bradley. Kevin Johnson and Tim Flowers had no interest in being college students and preferred to be in D-Rose's entourage when they were 18-19. Charlie Swiggett and Deonte Roberts both clashed with Jeter over their . Kaylon Anderson wasn't a D-I talent, and to this day it's a crapshoot with Canadians. Sometimes they can look like future LeBrons because there just isn't enough talent to adequately assess their skill level (*cough* WIGGINS *cough*). Rob's early struggles due to being a new head coach are also a big reason why we should heavily weigh previous head coaching success when we hire the next coach. I think the model for hiring that brought us Bo Ryan and Bruce Pearl should be strongly considered whenever Baldwin is done here. I don't think we necessarily have to hire someone who has been a successful head coach, but in our experience in Division I we'd probably be better off going that route. I'd be curious to see how hiring works for everyone. Uh oh...I'm getting the itch to research.
