FTA, we did wear Cardinal and White for one year; I think it was '84-85, when our uni's were stolen. They were old WI uniforms and it was when we were DIII. Talk about embarrassing! This was under the Ray Swetalla/Greg Capper regime.

If we wore Cardinal and White, I'd find a new team to cheer for. We used to! For the first ~10 years of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the school colors were Cardinal and White, the mascot was the Cardinals, the fight song was On Wisconsin and the alma mater song was Varsity. The students decided in the mid-60's that they didn't want to appear to be Bucky's little brother in athletics so they held a vote to replace it. After the Panthers were voted in, the student who offered up "Panthers" was asked why by the UWM Post and he told them he 'wanted something that would destroy a badger in a fight.' While then-Chancellor J. Martin Klotsche would later write in his memoir Confessions of an Educator that 'Madison never wanted Milwaukee to become the Michigan State to their Michigan but we weren't aiming for that height in athletics,' (my paraphrase) it was clear that the early student body had wanted just that. I would like to note that the second-place vote was for "Clippers," which was not the team name for any major college or professional sports team at the time (the Buffalo Braves would move to San Diego and become the Clippers about a decade later). That would have been the name that got my vote. The fact that our campus is a short walk away from one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world, that our university exists to serve the needs of this city built on water, and its then-unique status as a name for a sports team are all reasons I would have voted for Clippers over Panthers. But that ship sailed 20 years before I was born, we have nearly 60 years of history as the Panthers, so at this point I would only make minor changes to the mascot (perhaps a modifier like Warhawks or Seahawks). A modifier would be hard for Panthers, although I've personally called the baseball team the Dirt Cats for a long time. I also probably would have voted to go back to the Gulls over Panthers.
