You guys might want to sit down, as this is going to come as quite a shock:
All of this is being dictated by ESPN ... and Greg Kampe and stuff.

Here are some notes from RogoBob77 from the Detroit board regarding the tournament ticket sales so far at a UDM Luncheon
"The AD gave out some numbers regarding all-session tickets for the JLA Horizon tournament. OU has sold 67, Detroit 59, Valpo around 40 or so, some schools only a handful. Milwaukee has worked out a package with the Greektown hotel and I believe is committing to a couple hundred. I got a sense that they were hoping things would be further along by now."
"A couple of guys from Olympia were there to talk about the HL Tournament. They said there would be "growing pains" and there is "lots of work to do" -- see above advance ticket sales numbers. They are hoping for an OU-Detroit final. Sounds like UDM could play a last game at JLA next season, prior to the tournament. There are also discussions underway that could lead to the Titans playing an inaugural hoops event at the new arena in 2017. Olympia Sports bought a new basketball floor recently for the HL tournament. Next year, the HL awards for basketball might be rolled into the tournament weekend"
Sounds like it will be a packed house!!!

Of course they are hoping for an Oakland-Detroit final. Unfortunately for them, that is about as likely as the Lions winning the Super Bowl.
They will be lucky if one or the other makes a final game over the course of the entire deal. After all, Horizon League Champions don't lose to Youngstown, so that rules out Oakland this year already!

One day -- perhaps -- the league could build this thing up to where it draws 5,000 strong!

Ahem, Horizon League (AS CURRENTLY CONSTRUCTED!!!) Champions don't lose to Youngstown. Butler is irrelevant to the conversation, as they are spared from Motor City Madness. Too bad, they would have been another "no" vote to the stupid idea.

I did a quick calculation. If my wife and I decided to go to the tournament, the cost for the two of us, assuming we drove, would be something like $1500 for tickets, gas, and decent but not extravagant lodging and meals. That of course is putting aside the fact that I would lose three days of work. This to go to a tournament that is likely to be played in a stunningly, embarrassingly empty arena. In Detroit. I suppose if nothing else we would be on a first name basis with the ushers by Tuesday.
The mind reels.

You guys might want to sit down, as this is going to come as quite a shock: All of this is being dictated by ESPN ... and Greg Kampe and stuff. It sure as heck isn't coming from fans. BTW, i just got an email from the Alumni Foundation, trying to drum up excitement for the tournament. i know they're just trying to work with a system the way it is. It doesn't seem like the League is listening to fans, and Panther fans can't be the only ones who are less than pleased with the change in the tournament. i don't know how effective it would be at this point, but if we got a lot of responses from fans all over the league, it might help to put together an online petition to submit to the League office, pointing out all the ways the changes are not fan friendly: - losing home games means less revenue for the league because of lower attendance
- travel and lodging costs make traveling to Detroit from any significant distance too expensive for many fans, leading to lower attendance
- (your suggestions here...)
Unless the league is willing to send some of the revenues from the broadcast deal out to the member schools to help them get fans to the tournament.. (Yeah, i know how unlikely that is.)

Start a change.org petition or something similar?

Did anyone notice, as you were watching the Milwaukee/Valpo game, the crowd in the ARC? What does it hold? 5,000? To say there was space available is an understatement. And that's what they got for one of the most attractive home games of the year at VU with arguably the best team they have ever had.
Meanwhile, the announced attendance for the Oakland-Detroit game yesterday, on a Saturday afternoon in Detroit -- the biggest college basketball game in that city in many years -- was 6,125.
My take is that if, miraculously, the champ game of the HLT is OU v. DM, they could draw upwards of 7,500 fans. Probably won't, but could, depending on the weather. But if the champ game -- on a Tuesday night -- does not include DM or OU, we will be desperately lucky to have 4,000 in attendance no matter who the participating teams are. Including the ushers, janitors and concessionaires.
I don't know what the ticket/seating situation is at the Joe, but if the HL has any sense at all it will INSIST that seating for the champ game be GA except for the sections immediately behind the benches. They should ORDER the ushers to move fans as close to the floor as possible. That will be the only way the game won't look like an abject embarrassment on ESPN. Do I think they actually will? Of course not. I fear it will be Cleveland 2.0.

We still need to show up. We need as many people as possible to go to the tournament. For those who don't want to drive, the UWM Alumni Association has two options: Bus A is for those who want to go only for the Panther games, and will return after the Panthers lose. It will return when they lose or Monday night even if they win. Bus B is for those who want to go to the whole tournament. Spirit of Bruce and I will almost certainly be taking this bus, and I sure hope as many people as possible decide to take this bus as well - the bus also leaves at 5 a.m. Saturday, but will return after the championship game on Tuesday whether or not the Panthers advance that far. We can bellyache about the conference tournament all we want, but if we want this program to grow we need to show up, and show up big time. I've spoken with the conference and so far we have the most tickets sold already. So don't be the fan who stay home out of protest. Come with and let's take over downtown Detroit the whole weekend! www4.uwm.edu/alumni/HorizonLeague/

Valpo never draws for weeknight games. Valpo had 4,939 on Saturday and 2,619 on Thursday.
