Doesn't it suck that after Brandon Wood leaves Valpo for Michigan State that you still have to play against him and he knows your team so well that he's their best advance scout. While we're on that subject, how does it work that Haarsma had to sit out a season because he transferred, and B. Wood goes from Valpo to MSU's starting 5? Can't wait for the game! Myself and a couple others from the student section are making the trek to East Lansing today. I feel a signature win is coming tonight! Brandon Wood graduated from Valpo because he had to sit out a year with an injury (he actually did play in 5 games) for SIU Carbondale in his true freshman year. So he is a fifth year player. Graduate students are allowed to play immediately for the school they attend as long as the previous school does not have the graduate major he is studying. It was kind of comical because Wood's father told us that Brandon had not declared which major he would study at the time he chose MSU but that he would choose a major that Valpo didn't have. It wasn't real hard to find a major Valpo didn't have though. So Brandon felt no pressure to choose one immediately. From the Michigan State website: Wood Vs. The Panthers While MSU has never faced Milwaukee, Spartan senior Brandon Wood has faced Milwaukee four times in his career, while playing at Valparaiso the last two seasons. Wood is averaging 20.3 points in his four career games vs. the Panthers.

I just meant it would be our biggest regular-season win since we beat Purdue, and could define us as a real winner for a lot of recruits. What is so big about beating a 4-13 Purdue team, who ended up finishing 7-21 (3-13 in conference)? I can think of many bigger regular-season Panther wins since then...

I'm hoping that the Panthers give themselves an opportunity to win this game, and I think that will be decided in the first half. It would be an uphill battle, to say the least, to try and comeback on a team like MSU in their house.
If we can get out to a big start like the Texas Southern game, and maybe have a 5pt cushion at halftime, it makes keeping this game close or even a victory much more realistic.
That being said, I can't argue with Fran. He's being a realist, and if his scenario plays out I won't be disappointed as long as the Panthers gave MSU hell. I believe that the Panthers could lose by 10+ points but still have played a great game. Whatever the outcome, I just want this game to be a step forward (improved play), not backward.
Panthers 66 MSU 65
WAR PANTHERS!!!!!!!!

Game preview: www.lifeinlansing.com/the-state-of-basketball-blog/item/preview-michigan-state-vs-milwaukeeI respect your enthusiasm even as I wholly disagree with your analysis and am amused by your rhetoric. This already is a bona fide basketball program. We compete and win in a great league. Obsessing about early season non-con matches with "BCS" teams just makes us sound like wannabes. It irritated me last year when we lost early season games to the high D1 teams, as it will irritate me if we lose tonight. It horrified me when we lost to Loyola, because it was so much more important. Perspective. I seem to recall CSU having a big early season win last year. Syracuse? Didn't do them any good in March. Now let's all cheer for the Panthers to win tonight, and see what happens. But remember, even if we win we'll be 0-0 in the H League. My girlfriend's father often refers to this part of the season as "exhibition" games, because it doesn't count toward the League. I remind him that these games count, they're just non-conference games and count towards our overall record. Exhibition games don't count towards the overall record. Tonight isn't an exhibition game, and I'm not going to treat it as if it is. Did the Loyola loss hurt us more in the long run than the Western Michigan loss last year? Absolutely. But I don't want to play the entire season for one game in March, and I don't think it's healthy for a program like ours to keep this low-major, OVC mentality about non-conference basketball games. Cleveland State beat Vanderbilt on the road. We beat them last year, at their house. Butler went to the national championship game. We swept them in the regular season. What do teams in our League have to do for us to recognize that these games matter, that we should be playing to win every time out on the floor? Games against Michigan State or Michigan Tech matter, because it gets tallied as a W or an L on the schedule. At some point, this "sleeping giant" that you speak of has to wake up. College basketball isn't just played in March. It starts in November and goes through a Monday in April. My favorite part about your post, Fran, is the one-word sentence that simply said "Perspective." Boy, the city, state and university would have to take a step back and look at us from a whole new perspective if we achieve a "W" tonight in East Lansing, Michigan. And as for the Breslin being one of the toughest environments in the country to play in, I'd point out the fact that the Izzone will be M.I.A. at tonight's game. They're all home for Thanksgiving.

Milwaukee will give MSU all they can handle.
Thought the same thing... by gogreen8, 11/22/11 11:17 PM Re: Nervous about the game tomorrow by knollwoodtaverns, 11/22/11 11:17 PM
I say MSU by 8. I'll be there in the 6th row!!! The single perk of the Izzone being on break, haha.

I just hope we play hard, are competitive and get through the game with no injuries. Don't get me wrong, a win at the Breslin Center would be AMAZING, but I just don't see it happening without Tony Meier. Go Panthers!!!!

It's not about an "OVC" mentality, Jimmy. Tell me Wisconsin was going into EL to play without Mike Breusewitz, much less Jordan Taylor, and I'd feel exactly the same way.
All I ever expect out of our team is that they play hard and well. I'll let the chips fall as they may after that.
If we play great ball we might win. That would be nice. Let's see what happens.

I think you said it all......"IF we play GREAT ball, we MIGHT win....." We're coming off 2 games where we played very well. We're on a bit of a role, and I hope it continues. I'm reminded of our game against Butler in the HL championship game. The moment was too big for that group of players, and the underperformed. Beating MSU in their house is going to be extremely difficult. I truly believe, "never say never"....but we'll need alot of things to go right for us to win. I just hope we play great D, and we play hard and smart for 40 minutes. I like the team we have this year....I was impressed by their play over the weekend, and I hope we have a moment like that Clay Tucker shot against Butler at Hinkle many years ago.

I can feel Jimmy's rage at the sight of "UW-M" in the score box.
