FYI: No. 54 Northwestern (Big Ten No. 6) www.collegesportsmadness.com/article/2191I know for a fact that our coaches would like to play two closed-door scrimmages a year. I think these can be far more beneficial than beating the tar out of a non-Division 1 opponent.

I'd be surprised if they finished 6th in the Big Tenwelve. I'm glad we're getting a closed door scrimmage, but I wish instead we were getting a 2-for-2 series with them.

Will the Panthers game still be on 1130 WISN this season? I saw on Panthers site for pre-season stuff, TBA for radio.

This is something I'd love to see us do. Find the Badgers/Marquette shirts, and replace them. We give away enough shirts every year to make it feasible and giving Gruber/Jimmy John's/etc an ad on the back could help with cost. I wouldn't make them give up the shirt though. If they come in wearing Badger/Marquette gear they get a Milwaukee Panther shirt. If they bring one in, they get a shirt and something else (keychain? ticket deal? foam paw? etc.)

Is this really an issue? At Panther games I would say the ratio of Milwaukee shirts to Badger/Gold shirts combined is at least 50 to 1. One of the things I love about the way the program is developing is that year by year I see more and more fans coming to games in Panther-wear.
If it scalds your eyeballs to see the occasional red or blue shirt at the Cell, just turn your head. I guarantee you'll see immensely more black and gold.

It's not a major issue, but there's still a good amount of them. I certainly don't want to make it seem like we're overrun with red at games. But if they are wearing a non-Milwaukee shirt to a Milwaukee game, it's safe to say they're a casual fan. Giving them a shirt will improve our image with them and they'll be that much more likely to build a relationship with that person, making them want to come back for games. It's not the most pressing issue. Far from it. But it's simple enough to do and is a good way to boost spirit.

If they come in wearing Badger/Marquette gear they get a Milwaukee Panther shirt. If they bring one in, they get a shirt and something else (keychain? ticket deal? foam paw? etc.) This has actually been an idea that I had brought to the attention of the athletic department years ago as a student. It was part of a whole "Get the Red Out" week that not only featured a trade-in of Badger gear for Panther gear, but had a big blood drive taking place on campus. It wasn't my idea originally - the name of the event and the blood drive is something UCLA does leading up to each USC rivalry football game, and I don't remember where I found the t-shirt trade-in idea but I'm fairly sure I picked it up off the internet somewhere. I did develop it though, where I took the Badger t-shirts and donated them to the homeless in Madison, then when questions are asked about why I did it there, it's because I didn't want that gaudy red filling up Milwaukee because it's our town. And then would have donated a sh*t-ton of Panther gear to the homeless in Milwaukee. I know that it's not much of a problem now, thank all that is holy, but there's still enough Bucky love on this campus to make my skin crawl. We had the idea last year at the beginning of the fall to take those Panther flags all season-ticket holders got (there were many left over then) and go to each apartment that flew a Bucky flag and offer a free trade. Instead they just gave flags to many businesses, which is good, but they should have gone to the students. One of the things I think is so disappointing is the university's hesitation to just finally get out there and say "You know what, f*ck Madison" and go directly to the people and do things like these. No one put their foot down with the Gasthaus about advertising Badger football games until I went and pulled all those ads from the Post. No one has gone out there and just offered a trade to students who wear Badger gear - this doesn't need to be an event all the time, but should be done first day students get to campus. The university has begun to really create its own identity separate from Madison as an institution with real prestige in several fields - it just pains me to see that no one feels the need to push them out of the way to make room for us. I once heard of a roundtable where a consultant was brought in to boost the identity of the university in Student Affairs and Alumni Relations - the first thing she brought up was that when she flew into town, there was no UWM signage or merchandise for sale, but she saw UW stuff at the airport. The person who relayed the story to me said that the participants all grumbled about how "that's the way it is." She turned to them, indignant, and said something along the lines of "I'm sorry, I thought that school was 80 miles away. This is Milwaukee." The lack of a "Get the Red Out" week is a telling sign of a real, underlying lack of pressure from anyone to change the perceptions of this school and that school among the people in this school's community. Personally, it infuriates me. But you guys already knew that.

I agree with rawls, there is no excuse for wearing Badger or Marquette gear to Panther games and I love Bucky as much as the next person. Maybe it isnt the norm but I give my clothes some consideration before the game as does everyone else who wears Panther gear to games, meaning people that wear Bucky gear made the decision to do so. No one owns one t-shirt or sweatshirt, just dont wear your Bucky stuff on game day, that is all I am asking.

Maybe the folks who volunteered in the past to help out with this sort of effort should contact the department and offer their help again.

When I have heard Rick talk about the issue he has spoken about seeing Badger or Gold gear on campus, not at games.
Personally I think it's much ado about nothing. I have the benefit of old age. As I have said many times, when I went to UWM in the 70s I'm not sure the bookstore even sold any shirts or clothing that said UWM (much less Milwaukee) on it. Maybe letter jackets (those were the days) to athletes. Even if I'm misremembering and they did sell it, I can pretty much guarantee you that nobody bought it or wore it.
These days whenever I'm on campus I see kids everywhere wearing Panther gear. And if some kid wants to wear his Wisconsin or Marquette shirt, big deal. It's a free country. Hell, if you come to the games and cheer for the Panthers, I don't care what you wear.

Hell, if you come to the games and cheer for the Panthers, I don't care what you wear. If they choose to wear other team's gear I completely agree they should have the right to. That's the entire point of the strategy, that you make that offer. Hey, since you're at a Panther game, we'd like to give you this Panther shirt if you'd like. We're trying to become our own self, separate from UW-Madison. And if you trade in your Bucky gear, we can get you not only a shirt, but another gift from the Panthers. If they choose to turn down the offer, fine. But that one red shirt in a see of black/gold stands out. Again, it's a pretty minor issue, but it is an issue. As far as looking the other way, I don't have the data, but I believe ignoring an issue hasn't worked yet.

But as certain people will gladly remind us, WE'LL NEVER SUCCESSFULLY DEVELOP OUR OWN IDENTITY UNLESS WE blah blah blah. Whatever. All it does when someone wears a Badger shirt is make it easier to pick out the jerks. Like the people who wear Cubs gear to random Brewer games.
