I doubt it would be Evan Richard. You don't back up a Freshman with another Freshman.

I doubt it would be Evan Richard. You don't back up a Freshman with another Freshman. Except Evan spent last season getting used to the game from the bench. He has a year of lifting and conditioning on Shaq. Not to mention Evan played in the last half this summer's pro am. He is ready to play.

Not point guard.

While he is best used at shooting guard, he isn't too bad of an option for backup at PG.

I could see Evan and Paris taking turns at PG when Shaq is on the bench. That's it. Without Kaylon, we would have a functional rotation of 12.

For what it's worth ...
Here's how The Sporting News College Basketball Yearbook sees it:
1, Detroit 2, UWM 3, Butler 4, Cleveland State 5, Valparaiso 6, UWGB 7, Wright State 8, Youngstown State 9, Loyola 10, UIC
All-conference team Ray McCallum, Jr., Detroit Eli Holman, Detroit Trevon Harmon, Cleveland State Tony Meier, UWM Ronald Nored, Butler
Player of the Year -- Eli Holman, Detroit Newcomer of the Year -- Roosevelt Jones, Butler Coach of the Year -- Ray McCallum, Sr., Detroit
The publication lists four five-man all-region juco teams followed by a list of 50 "others to watch." Both Gulley and Harris are on that list.

Both Gulley and Harris are on that list. Not going to say they're wrong on the team preseason predictions, but it would take something no Butler fan has seen from Nored, and that's consistent offensive production for him to get on that all conference team. Other than that, no real complaints from me, though really if McCallum was that good of a coach he could do more with all the talent they've got at Detroit.

I think what Sporting News is predicting is that Nored gets what's essentially an honorary All-Conference selection for his combined contributions to the league, which is actually fairly probable.
Detroit will probably not win the league. But this is their all-in year, so you never know -- they're losing Holman, their standout juco transfers, and possibly even McCallum in 2012. So maybe a sense of urgency will make them a more complete team.
But other than that, that's an absolutely rock-solid league rundown.

Like everyone else, I recognize Detroit has more talent this year than any other team in the league. But I have a very hard time penciling them in as the champ. Until I'm convinced they will play as a team, I just can't get there.

Until Butler is fully dethroned I would have a hard time picking against them. But I think the top 3 teams is pretty accurate.

Guys,
That Sporting News "preview" was written by Joe Maxse of Cleveland. He currently covers boxing over at Cleveland.com His last article about CSU was written in 2009. There are several that have covered HL teams that would be better than him. Woods, Nagle, Demovsky, and Lazerus could all do better.

And yet there's not much in that preview that I can take exception with. Maybe Detroit is too high and Wright State is too low, but other than that it makes quite a bit of sense. The fact that he'd pick UWM second and Meier to be a first teamer shows that he's been paying attention.

Demovsky of course, because he's the best beat writer in the conference. I'll give you Woods, but Mark Lazerus has his head so far up the Valpo rectum that you really don't need to question why he's seeing brown and yellow.
