Pleased, but...A review of the weekend, my thoughts, and short preview for Monday. Full preview up on Monday morning. I'll be interviewed on Victory Firelight (Butler's PantherU) and hopefully I'll get to talk to Damon Lewis tomorrow to have a similar discussion on my website. Huge game on Monday. Our play sets the tone for the rest of the season. Let's get it done.

Milwaukee will have to play a near flawless game to win. A performance like that against Detroit will not get it done against Butler, the Bulldogs are too disciplined and well coached to fold like the Titans. The Bulldogs are on a roll right now. During the current winning streak someone besides Howard and Mack has stepped up to contribute. We will find out where we stand in the HL.

I hope I am wrong, but I have a bad feeling about tonight. Not the game itself, although that will definitley be a big challenge, but rather the crowd and the atmosphere at the Cell.
This game could not fall at worse time of year, schedule-wise. Students are gone, today is the first day back to work for what has been a long holiday for many, and frankly - there is simply no buzz about this team around town at all.
One guy told me on facebook, "I wouldn't go to see the Panthers right now if you paid me". I deleted his comment, but I''m afraid it is somewhat indicative of the public's opinion of this team.
I'll be there, cheering as loud as I can with the wicked cold I have, but I won't be surprised if our actual attendance is somewhere around 2,500.

Interesting spread. I thought it might be insightful to recall this post (since updated) from last season:
Of the last 10 games played in Milwaukee between these two teams, the Panthers have won seven ... and the three losses were winnable contests against Butler teams ranked in the top 18. In the first, a 55-50 loss, the Panthers made only 8 of 20 free throws. In the second, the game played during the Great Blizzard of 2008, UWM jumped off to a 12-0 lead before falling 83-75 in overtime. In the third, the host school was within two of the national runners-up in the closing minutes of an eventual 73-66 defeat. In short, this has been a tough place for the Bulldogs to play, and the crowd has been a big part of that.

Agree with god ... unless Milwaukee rolls out a performance like they had against WMU, I expect this game to be very competitive.
Here's how I see Butler matching up with the Panthers: Smith on Hill - Hill certainly has the experience advantage, but Smith's emergence helps by providing a little more size and potentially keeping Howard away from picking up fouls down low against Hill. Howard on Meier - While Howard isn't as likely to pick up fouls against Tony, he will be pulled away from the basket a little more to guard the arc. Nored on Boyle - Nored may be the best off-ball defender in the league (or country). Tone will need to work much harder for open looks than he did against UDM. Mack on Williams - Guessing on this matchup, but I think Williams would be able to post Hahn if that were the matchup. Look for Mack to clog the middle on help and force Williams to beat him from the perimeter. Hahn on McCallum - Could be the key matchup as most teams seem to immediately attack Hahn. If he struggles, Vanzant is waiting in the wings to provide a better defender.
IMO, the biggest key will be whether or not Butler can hit perimeter shots (which they will get against Milwaukee) and limit open looks for Boyle and McCallum. I expect Hill to have a big game, because he always does against Butler. The Bulldogs can survive that if they limit Boyle and McCallum (and even Meier).
Enjoy the game!

Agree with god ... unless Milwaukee rolls out a performance like they had against WMU, I expect this game to be very competitive. It will take more than avoiding a WMU like game to be competitive with Butler. Milwaukee will need a near perfect performance. Butler has found itself and is playing very good ball at the moment. My son and I will be there rooting for the Black and Gold !!!

I root for Butler in every game it plays except against Milwaukee or when it means another NCAA berth for the league, and I don't think the Panthers need to play a "near-perfect" game.
The Panthers didn't play anywhere close to a perfect game in any of the previous four games here against the Bulldogs and still very nearly managed to win every single time.
Here's the formula for success and it's the same as it always is (especially against a team as heady and well-coached as Butler): limit turnovers, hit open shots, fight through screens, don't allow second chances, take secondary transition opportunities (as they might be the best you'll get) and for Pete's sake make free throws. If you don't do at least four of these well, you might lose by only a little ... but be sure of this, you'll lose.
I plan on giving the Bulldogs a standing ovation during introductions for all they've achieved for the league and the manner in which they've carried themselves ... and then cheering my head off for my alma mater.

It will come down to the 3-point shooting. If they fall like the 2nd half against Detroit, there's no reason our Panthers can't be more than competitive maybe even pull one out. If they aren't finding the net, it could be another CSU. Or maybe we'll consistently run set plays.......gotta keep the faith.

You're probably right about the turnout tonight, Lou. Either way, I'll be there doing my best to support the team (with the same wicked cold).
Let's hope for a Panther W. Sure would be a much needed shot in the arm.

I agree with the crowd. Many have been off from work for over a week. I hope everyone who has a ticket goes to the game.
