Running the Full Court Press on the JSHopefully I covered everything. Side: I wanted to say something to SuperKing's assumption that VictorPanther's USC-UWM comparison was off base. I don't think that's true. When Marquette was in the doldrums between Final Fours, they received adequate newspaper coverage. Wisconsin was god-awful for all but a handful of years in the last 60 before Bo Ryan came along, but their coverage was top-notch in the Journal and Sentinel, and eventually Journal Sentinel.

Hey BP- I want to ask this, shouldn't the Panthers get more coverage than a local high school girls volleyball team? I'm mean who really wants to read about that!
Last Thursday, the scrimmage was not in the paper untill Friday. There was a big part of the page about a local girls volleyball team on Thursday.

Great article Jimmy, send a copy to the Journal. Oops. Journal-Sentinel. Pride myself on using the actual name of things.

Pride myself on using the actual name of things. Then you would call it Journal Sentinel.

Its a great article but lets be honest, the Panthers don't sell newspapers. There is no equality in coverage for a reason. The Journal is already a financial mess. They provide the coverage that this program warrants. When you are can barely draw 3000 per game you aren't going to get the same treatment as programs that draw 15,000-17,000, make the tournament almost every year, and have significant audiences watching on TV.
I understand people's frustration and I am happy we are discussing coverage instead of getting all riled up about the name issue, but just because we all want to see more coverage doesn't mean that it makes sense for the Journal to go beyond what they are currently doing
One this program does something to warrant more coverage I am sure the Journal will do it but right now we are an also-ran in a mid-major conference and that doesn't sell papers.
I thought the article on Hill today was nice and was the feature story on the Sports section on JSonline.

How about in the early nineties, when Wisconsin and Marquette were both drawing 5,000 fans per game?

As a financial mess that seems to be stuck in an irreversible spiral downward, the Journal Sentinel would appear to be well-advised to explore avenues that could create new revenue streams. A logical one would appear to be an outreach to the local urban university with an enrollment of 30,000-plus, generating community goodwill and thousands of new readers.
Or its decision-makers can continue with their current course and run the thing into the ground.

How about in the early nineties, when Wisconsin and Marquette were both drawing 5,000 fans per game? Not sure where your getting your stats from, according to the UW record book UW averaged right around 10,000 a game in the early 90's. The 80's had worse attendance with the 1981-82 season being the worst at 5,039. Too lazy to look up MU's attendance but O'Neill was their in the early 90's and I would guess their attendance was higher than 5,000. I know both athletic departments were a financial mess in the early 90's.

I get pissed about Milwaukee's coverage in the Journal too but really its gotta start with the alumni. We have a ton of alumni but they don't care about the team. If people who attended the school don't care, why should the local paper care? When BP was here the coverage was much better but thats because everyone wanted to hear about this exciting team and their energetic coach.

Not to be an asshole, but the sooner some people on here realize that uwm basketball will never be as big as marquette/wisconsin (especially wisconsin) in milwaukee and the rest of the state, the better
the only way that the coverage of uwm gets bigger is if they are winning (which they are and should be this year), a bunch of people b****ing on a internet discussion board wont help very much
