Of course anything can change, but on paper this is what it looks like. I'm just asking who are all the walk-ons? Since it 13 full-ride players on a team.

Walker, Souter, Gustavson, and Haggerty are the current walkons. I don't know what Wolf's scholarship status is.

The walk-ons will be all the players who are not on scholarship. If you want more detail than that, you will have to wait until November.

Currently Ajami, Wolf, Haggerty, Souter and Gustavson are slated to be non-scholarship next season, but I would guess Haggerty's non-scholarship season will be saved for another year, and Ajami might receive a scholarship next year if one is available. If the current walk-on situation remains unchanged, we might have unused scholarships remaining next season...therefore rewarding one to a guy like Ajami. As Fran said, this is all very fluid and will definitely change throughout the next couple of months...

I have no problem with speculating, considering speculation is basically all that's being done on the boards this time of year.
I know for a fact that Haggerty was asked by the coaching staff to rescind his scholarship next year to make room for the incoming recruiting class, so I assume the same was done with all the other walkons. I don't think UWM would take a scholarship away from an established scholarship player, which leads me to believe that one of the incoming recruits will be asked to walk on; and of those likely six players, Wolf makes the most sense. Carter is too valuable a commodity, the three incoming freshmen are too good, and I wouldn't hotly pursue a JC point guard only to then make him pay his way.
All speculation, but that's how I think it'll play out. All this will change if Deonte isn't on the team come November -- which, let's face it, is a real possibility -- but it's what I expect with the current makeup of the team.

The Haggerty situation was part of the agreement when he signed on here. I believe Riley had the same situation...but I'm not certain. Expect roster changes for next season...it happens.

I was aware of the Haggerty deal but I dont think Riley had the same get 4 buy 1 deal but that could have changed I suppose. As for Ajami it has been mentioned here that he has basically said I dont need a scholarship due to his family financial situation.
Based on my understanding of the scholarship situation and the roster "as is" at this time I see only 1 scholarship open. But there is almost always some roster turnover so I would assume there will be 2 or 3 scholarships to offer this spring.

Wow, I didn't know you could take away a scholarship for a player who is still on the team.

Does the large number of players on this roster plus the possible addition of more players, once again point to the possibility that this staff has a hard time judging talent so they have to bring in a ton of players and throw them against the wall and whatever sticks they keep?

Does the large number of players on this roster plus the possible addition of more players, once again point to the possibility that this staff has a hard time judging talent so they have to bring in a ton of players and throw them against the wall and whatever sticks they keep? I don't think that's necessarily what's going on. One thing Rob has been good at is getting extremely talented walk-ons to join the program each year. This is a big reason why our roster is typically around 18 people deep. Regardless of the ability to judge talent or what-have-you, we always only have 13 scholarships available, so anything after that is gravy in my opinion. Christian Wolf is a fantastic walk-on player who could be a mainstay in the rotation before he exhausts his eligibility. Patrick Souter, as you saw briefly last season, has the potential to become an electric change of pace guard, and could eventually find the starting lineup. I don't think there's any shame in finding a Jason Averkamp every once in awhile. You typically give guys scholarships because you expect them to be part of the rotation before the walk-on players, but fortunately/unfortunately it doesn't always work out that way. I think the biggest problem with having 18 guys on your roster every year is being able to set your rotation, and we've seen Rob struggle with this in the past. However, I would say this is a good problem to have.
