Portland was in the CIT, not the NIT.

The schedule is now nearly complete. We'll play in the Athletes in Action Basketball Classic on Nov. 12-14 against Florida Atlantic, UC Davis and at Portland, an NIT team in 2010. www.basketballtravelers.com/pages/m_athletesinaction.htmBy my count, we're looking for no more than three games for the upcoming season, probably one home and two away. We're getting closer by the day to having no non-D1 games. That's a very good thing. Makes sense Milwaukee would be playing in the 2010 Athletes in Action classic this year, Wright State participated in it this past season.

I like this tidbit of participating in the AIA tournament:
"Generous guarantees are available to tournament participants. Options are available to roll guarantees into a future foreign tour opportunity or participation in our U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam tournament."
Yes please.

This is very good news. Early season tournaments are where you have a chance to get your name out there, to let people know you are for real. This is a smaller venue, but it includes an opportunity to participate in the much larger venue of the Virgin Islands tournament in the future.
Portland is a program on the come up, and UC Davis is of personal interest to me as the likely destination of my post-graduate studies. I don't know much about Florida Atlantic, but it seems to me like this will be a tournament the panthers could, and should win.

I'd like to go to the Virgin Islands in a couple years.

Before we are giving the Panthers the title, let's take a better look at the Portland Pilots.
A team that got on the map on Turkey weekend in the 76st Classic in Anaheim. Beating UCLA 74-47 than beating #16 Minnesota before losing in the title game to West Virginia. That Monday made the top 25. Plays in the West Coast Conf with Gonzaga and St.Mary's.

Also, Portland's success helped elevate the WCC to a two bid team (almost 3). This is exactly what the Horizon needs now- solid, consistent #2 & 3 teams in the next few years.

If the field expands to 96 as suspected, Horizon should be shooting for 3 bids on an annual basis.

No ... doesn't mean that shouldn't be the goal.

The NIT is owned by the NCAA. If the tournament goes to 96 teams, what would be the NIT field would be integrated into the NCAA Tournament itself. So no, the Horizon League wouldn't get 3 bids. The Big East would just get 10 or 11.

I was under the impression that a Virgin Islands trip didn't hinge on winning this tournament.

The Big East would HAVE gotten in 13 and it would HAVE been a travesty.

Just like it is to get two teams now into the field of 65.
