UWM needs a catchy phrase that people can associate with our University. Unfortunately the 'Milwaukee Idea' does not cut it! UW has "On Wisconsin" and MU has "We are Marquette." Our University however has nothing. It would be great to see the Student Section or Panther Band come up with a short chant that could fill this void. Eventually, if the entire stadium picks up on it, this could certainly become our "On Wisconsin." Something like this would actually help our school create an identity. Whichever students can create this chant will certainly leave a permanent mark on their school.

Something else that might help us create an identity, is a school song where people actually stand and sing. No one knows the words to our pointless school song, because administration, and campus as a whole has no school spirit. Someone needs to get on carlos with this one I think

bball30, I'm intrigued by the comments about lack of school spirit. Tell me again how the chancellor can institute a policy on this? Agreed we need to get more folks up and joining the school song/fight song. What do you suggest? FYI, there is a Black and Gold Committee that has addressed this issue and I sit on the "Spirit" committee. Here's a link to a website w/info on this and other initiatives being addressed. www.uwm.edu/Dept/divstaff/bgc/Spirit/spirit.htmIf you would like to become involved (it takes students to make it work!) then follow up...

The reason I bring up Carolos, is it seems to me he has some authoriy over the university, and would in turn be able to make the school song at least acknowledged. I for one also stand and clap, but do NOT know the words, and they are damn near impossible to find. Maybe a banner at the Cell??? maybe it sounds high schoolish, but if it works, why the hell not. I am just thinkin he would be able to even at the welcoming ceremony get people goin on the whole school thing. I went to the spirit comitte webiste you linked, and read a bit, but much of it didn't seem to hold any water.
And maybe i'm old fashioned here, but the pledge thing just doesn't fly. Would you make a cheap rip off of the star spangled banner? I doubt it
Sorry if I am being blunt about all this, just my thoughts

do you not like it bc i changed the words of the pledge. A symbol of the USA. Do you veiw this as a disrespect to the pledge and america itself. or do you not like the actual content of whats being said. i can change that.

so, i will assume that changing the wordds of the pledge is disrespectful. however, congress has deleted certain phrases from the pledge in order to make the pledge more PC. changing the framers intenet of the pledge. Do you feel that its ok for congress to take words out?

No i do not. Congress should not have changed the words, or left out, I am assuming the One nation under god part. I am very very old school, and conservative in my views.

its all fine and dandy if you wish to have conservative veiws. i wouldnt want it any other way.
i do not wish to argue with you about the ideals of what it means to be patriotic seeing how you have very tradditional veiws and i have well. we wont go there.
however, i will suggest to you this. if the writter of the pledge wanted his poem to be written stone he would of written in stone. they could write things in stone back then.

Verbage to the UWM fight song and alma mater are here: www.uwm.edu/Dept/Chancellor/SoundsofUWM.htmI agree, more can be done. Being a member of the spirit committee, believe me I know where you're coming from. My point/question to you is, just how exactly do you instill spirit? Let me tell you a little story. Years ago at games at the Cell, someone said we don't have spirit, no one knows the fight song (literally; many had never even HEARD the music to it...). So an administrative (read: chancellor) decision was made to have a faculty member SING the alma mater as we went into halftime at games. It was painful to watch and listen to. I have my ideas and suggestions; however, if you want a solution, don't be a part of the problem. Get involved with our process. Be the voice of students we on the spirit commission need to hear, otherwise your voice may not get heard. I am like you and want to support moving forward with spirit and school pride. But you're part of the problem if all you do is complain and never become part of the solution (this sentence is more harsh than I intend for you). Simply put, if you want to change it, do something about it. I've been part of games for 19 years; it's getting better each year, day by day. One recommendation I would suggest for getting folks up on the fight song/alma mater; put the words up on the screen when playing it. I think words are also in the game programs as well....not sure on that. Anyway, we're in agreement in the direction we're heading. Spirit will continue to come....

I don't think Congress ever changed the words to the Pledge. Nor do I think it should be changed. Similarly, I think it is disrespectful to alter the words as proposed. I would never support that.
