49-68 UW-madison wins, a merciful performance from the red sweater club.

Well, from watching the game and checking the box, it looks like as far as positives go, we didn't get completly killed on the boards (34-26). That has to be good considering how big Madison is. I mean, I felt like the Florida game last year, just a parade of big guys.

Not much to be excited about tonight. Nick Hansen finally got some playing time and he made a few shots. Franklin and Al Hanson showed why they should be getting limited minutes. I am glad I didn't get "Tyrone Young excited" with all of Franklin's preseason hype. Kind of confused why it took rob 37 minutes to put Gentry in the game. We had no chance in the paint, so he should have just put our best perimeter options on the floor. In all honesty, this should have been a 30+ point drubbing. Luckily UW took their foot of the gas after the first 10 minutes or so.

Badgers cruise past UWM

Madison — Senior forward Alando Tucker scored 20 points as Wisconsin soundly defeated UW-Milwaukee, 68-49 Wednesday night at the Kohl Center.
Although it was a low-scoring affair, the Badgers did just enough to maintain a comfortable distance between themselves and the Panthers.
With 5 minutes left in the game, Wisconsin had built a 20-point advantage.
Junior forward Paige Paulsen led the Panthers with 13 points.
Wisconsin started off with total domination, opening a 9-0 lead as four different players scored the first four baskets.
UWM scored its first nine points off three-pointers: two by Paulsen and one by junior guard Avery Smith.
A steal and dunk by Tucker resulted in a 14-9 Badgers lead with just under 12 minutes left in the half.
Another Tucker basket gave Wisconsin its first double-digit advantage of the game at 21-11 as part of an 11-0 spurt. A three-point basket by Nick Hansen with 4:17 to play finally stopped the Badgers' run.
Meanwhile, the Panthers tried in vain to slow the Badgers' pursuit of the basket once they were inside the post. UWM was highly unsuccessful, and the fouls kept piling up.
Junior Sam Mauldin picked up his third foul with more than 7 minutes left in the first half, and sophomore Ricky Franklin, junior forward Marcus Skinner, senior forward Kevin Massiah and Paulsen each had two fouls in the first half.
Forty seconds into the second half, Mauldin, who at 6-9 was about the only UWM player with the size and height to stand up to the Badgers in the post, picked up his fourth foul and had to take a seat.
The score was stuck on 45-30 for about four minutes before Badgers guard Jason Bohannon finally broke the ice with a basket with 11:45 remaining.
From there, the Badgers' defense contained the Panthers and prevented any major runs that would have sprung UWM new life.
The contest pitted Panthers coach Rob Jeter against Badgers coach Bo Ryan, whom Jeter spent 14 years with as a player and assistant. Jeter is now 0-2 against his mentor.
UWM heads to Sam Houston State Dec. 22 for its next matchup.
The Badgers host Pittsburgh 11 a.m. Saturday.

I too would petition for more Gentry, some of these guys have to get a chance to develop this year, and it would have been nice to see him out there with Bohannon. I still think Butch is one of the most overrated players in college basketball, and Greg Steimsma is not good. Just plain old not good. I did like what Massiah did toinght, he looked poised at least, still needs to get that "killer instinct" before conference season.

I think we are fortunate that we didnt even come close to seeing UW's best game. They came off an emotional win at Marquette and had to be looking forward to Saturday at home against #2 Pitt. UW although coming out with a 9-0 lead looked flat and coasted the rest of the way. Can only hope it gets better from here

Just go back from Madison and yes Bo eased up on us, he used a 10 man rotation all game long. Our bigs played good D but its not their fault that Wisconsin could shoot right over them, and o yeah nobody in the country may be able to guard tucker. Our guards did a great job of penetrating and should good confidence in their ball handling, but once they got past the guards the Wisconsin bigs were there to show them why they are a top 10 team. Our team lacks size and the ability to put the ball in the hoop. We ran the O and took good shots, they just didn’t fall, and someday they will, things will get better.

I too was at the game, but I got to tell you I didn't see a lot of dribble penetration by the UWM guards. I saw a lot of jump shots which was understandable because of UW's bigs. However, I did see some horrendous shooting. I'm sure Al Hanson is a fine young man, but he has to see as little time as possible because his shooting was terrible. He had several wide open 3's that weren't even close. Overall, another bad night shooting from the field. Personally, I think the rest of this season should be devoted to the development of our younger guys like Thornton, Gentry, & Franklin. Get these guys as many minutes as possible so they will be that much better next year. The one thing that was a bright spot was even when our boys were down big, they still played their A$$es off which is a testament to Coach Jeter and his coaching staff, way to keep fighting guys it'll pay off in the future.

I think I remember seeing some discussion on this board about this, but what is up with Avery Smith? It seems like he is in the doghouse quite often and he seems to not get along with teammates. He often looks sullen and not at all happy.

He often looks sullen and not at all happy. I'm sure that nobody on the team is happy...they're 2-10. I don't want to speculate any further, but I have seen some situations that lead me to think there's something going on. Hopefully it's just the frustrations of losing. About last night...not much too say. UW has size, we don't. UW has playmakers, we don't....at least right now. UWM did play pretty good defense considering we had Ricky Franklin (6'1) guarding Alando Tucker (6'6) and Nick Hansen (6'5) guarding Brian Butch(6'11). Sam, Marcus, Paige and Massiah all got into some foul trouble early on. At one point I thought we'd maybe even see Bendall in the 1st Half. On the drive home last night I thought a lot about this team and the season and quite frankly and realistically...it's going to be tough to win games. I won't be surprised with an 8th or 9th place finish. I could go into more detail and opinion/analysis, but I won't.

I have no idea what the deal is with Avery, but with this being just pure speculation when I see him on the floor it looks like he has a bit of an attitude problem. He yells at teamates and kinda more or less is not a person who is getting along with them very well. I think it alienates some of his teamates and the coaching staff because he has a negative attitude towards his teamates...I just often times see avery showing alot of body language when he is talking which makes me believe he isnt talking in a civil manner and teamates are tuning him out.

Jeter Quote's from after the game
UWM coach Rob Jeter on Wisconsin's 11-0 first-half run
"He (Alando Tucker) hit some key jump shots in that stretch, and that's why he's one of the best players in the country. He made some tough shots. But I thought our guys really battled. We got the ball into some good spots, but didn't come away as clean with some of the looks as we would like. I thought the difference in that stretch was the things Alando Tucker can do one-on-one."
Jeter on the rivalry between schools within the state of Wisconsin
"There are quality teams here in the state. There are quality programs with a lot of pride and tradition in every university. The games should be played. We're all competitors, we all like to have fun, we've all played at one point, and the fans like to see it, so it's a privilege and it's an honor, and it's something that should be. I enjoy it, and look forward to playing all the teams in the state next year. It's going to be fun.
Jeter on what he learns from watching Bo Ryan
"Now I watch more how he handles himself on the sidelines, being a head coach. As an assistant, I would watch how he handled players, and how he would motivate guys, and how he would make decisions during games. He sticks to the principles, he sticks to the basic values of his program, and that means he'll take care of the basketball and he's not going to give you extra opportunities. He's going to try and create those by getting to the free throw line and getting offensive rebounds, and your team [Wisconsin] is exactly that. When you take a look at the fouls that some of these guys have on them- I think Kammron Taylor has a couple on the year, and Tucker has only a couple on the year- it's amazing."

There was a situation against UW where Paulsen committed a really dumb reaching foul and it was his 3rd or 4th. During the brief stoppage, Avery yelled in his direction as the team was huddling up, as they do during stoppages, and Paige had to be grabbed by Al or Ricky and brought back into the huddle as he was walking away in disgust. Now maybe he was pissed at himself for committing a stupid foul, maybe he was pissed that Avery yelled at him, maybe both. As a fan it was disheartening to witness. I don't want these guys to quit playing hard (which I don't think will happen) but I also don't want to see them bickering and getting down on one another.
