Bottom line: This program is solid, intact and nowhere near sliding back to mediocrity. Simply connect the dots of all the heralded prospects that are redshirting, have signed letters of intent and have reportedly committed.

It's clear to me that Jeter was their first choice. According to the press, Mc Dermott was interviewed on Sunday. Jeter was interviewed Monday morning. Mc Dermott was offered the job around midnight on Monday. If they liked him so much why did it take so long for Pollard to make that call?
The most believeable answer to that question is that Jeter talked to Pollard on Monday night and said thanks but no thanks.
That makes the most sense because those rumors on the Cyclone fan boards came from somewhere. And remember it was on ISU's official fan site in addition to its unofficial one. Someone(s) in a position to know at ISU told people on both forums they had decded on Jeter.
The 7 am phone call was almost certainly to alert Jeter that Mc Dermott had accepted and that an announcement would be made later in the morning.
That gave him time to make his own announcement. If they had announced their choice first, nothing RJ said would convince many people that he didn't want the job.
At the same time, Pollard wants everyone to have confidence in Mc Dermott so he tells the press whatever he needs to so they beleive he was the first choice. And maybe due to the rumors plus wanting ISU to look like a desirable place to coach, he puts on the paint a little thick.

I have one more thing to add. "Coach Jeter and I spoke this morning," (12:01 AM Tuesday)"It was hard; he's a very close, personal friend of mine." I'm sure getting told "No thanks" by a very close, personal friend of his was very hard.
