Jimmy .. click this link: www.wisc.eduYou will find that the formal name for the Madison campus is "University of Wisconsin-Madison" Its sports teams do not use Madison. It's commonplace for the main campus to not use the formal name of the university. The formal name for Illinois is "University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign," etc. Charlotte is still the "University of North Carolina-Charlotte" but uses Charlotte for its sports teams.

Olson, great first post. Welcome to the board. 6thman, Wisconsin will always be Wisconsin. Their formal name is the University of Wisconsin. Not the University of Wisconsin - Madison. That school has never had the Madison part of their name unless it is a UW system meeting or something intra-system. While you may argue that sports should follow suit, it's not going to happen. Our formal name is the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. Until we change the formal name to the University of Milwaukee, Milwaukee University, or Wisconsin State University, we will keep the hyphenated crap. UNC-Charlotte is going through the same identity crisis that we are. It is unfortunate that we are hyphenated. But Wisconsin is still Wisconsin. Question: Has anyone in the last year brought up a possible name change for our school? I don't usually listen to student government or regent meetings, so I'm not in the loop. I know they are the university of Wisconsin but I despise that they get away with making the nation think they are the only Sports team in Wisonsin. I bet they bank a lot of ticket sales just because they are Wisconsin, and where they are from is secondary. I just personally wish UW-Milwaukee fans wouldn’t call them just Wisconsin and call them atleast the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Also to answer your question since Madison funds us we can't just drop UW from our name, not till a billionaire wants to fund all of our school's programs and we are no longer affiliated with the UW system. It’s not likely that we will ever just become the University of Milwaukee.

While there are definite sports related advantages to being called "Milwaukee" there are non-sports advantages to have University of Wisconsin on your diploma.
I don't see why we can't just tell the Horizon league to refer to us as Milwaukee. I also don't see why we can't change the name to University of Milwaukee for all purposes other than those that require the use of the UW-Milwaukee name. (I doubt there are that many)

Dutch, I'm shaking my fist at you. You know, if you go up to Wausau and say you go to UWM, they assume you are talking about UW-Marathon County.
Do we refer to UNC as UNC or UNC-CH? Do we refer to Illinois as Illinois, or Illinois-Champaign Is it the University of California or Cal St. Berkely?
There are a lot of state schools in other states that keep the University of (State)- (City). For example...
UNLV, UCLA, UAB, UTEP...just to name a few.

Anyone else ever notice when someone you don't really know asks you where you go to school, and you say UWM, they will sometimes say oh Madison, and you have to correct them and say, "NO, UWM is Milwaukee, Madison has no abbreviation." I used to get that, now I will just say Milwaukee. I still get people asking me oh Marquette? That pisses me off even more. It is true that we need our own identity. I really don't care for Wisconsin State, but even though Milwaukee State doesn't technically make sense, it does have a nice ring to it. But Milwaukee would be cool. We are after all bigger than every university in the city combined, and the second largest in the state!

I thought we covered this already! Only in sports are they called the University of Wisconsin. HOWEVER, the formal name is the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Again, check their website. They do not refer to themselves as "Wisconsin": www.wisc.edu/Here's the UW-Madison "about" statement: "In achievement and prestige, the University of Wisconsin-Madison has long been recognized as one of America's great universities. A public, land-grant institution, UW-Madison offers a complete spectrum of liberal arts studies, professional programs and student activities. Spanning 933 acres along the southern shore of Lake Mendota, the campus is located in the city of Madison." To learn more about the UW-System, visit: www.wisconsin.edu/I am strongly in favor of changing our athletics title to Milwaukee. However, just like every other UW system school, we must keep our formal title as UW-Milwaukee. Later, UWMfreak

personally, I think "UWM" is a lot catchier than "Milwaukee," and I don't give a damn if we're considered a hyphonated school; it's not necessarily a bad thing.
What about California and UCLA? Is UCLA a hyphenated school?

Since this thread was about Jeter I thought I'd mention that it was nice again to hear the Jeter chant at the end of tonight's game.
And in case our student fans didn't notice it, I also thought I mention that more than a few of the other fans joined in the clapping.

Yes, and whomever started the Robbie Jeter chant, great job waiting until less than a minute when the game was well in hand.
